It happened enough that the events had been incorporated into some local myth, about how the earth would get angry and set loose spirits, and the indicator would be the blood red bubbling lake.

I can't think of a volcanic gas likely to cause blood and foaming at the mouth and nose...

EDIT: Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause oedema, apparently. Maybe that's it.

Special smilies are best in moderation. Increases their fun value when they do show up. *nod*

HCl or HF can be produced by volcanoes. I'd imagine that inhaling either of them would generally spoil your day. Not sure about the foaming though.

Yeah. I know someone who laughs whenever someone farts (And she calls me out whenever I do). She compared earthquakes to farts once in science class. I said, "Let's test that theory" and I ripped one. It was funny for me and for her, because it was loud and really near her.

Health effects

Hydrogen fluoride is toxic and can be fatal if even small amounts are ingested or absorbed through the skin. HF burns require immediate treatment beginning with washing with water but specialized care is indicated. HF acid burns are not similar to those produced by hydrogen chloride (HCl), or other common acids. Onset time of symptoms of HF burns are proportional to concentration. Above 50% instantaneous effects are apparent. Between 20% and 50% clinical symptoms may not appear for one to eight hours. Concentrations below 20% may not result in symptoms for 24 hours.

Entry routes include inhalation, ingestion, skin and eyes. Aside from burns to the eyes, skin, lungs, or digestive tract, the lowering of serum calcium (hypocalcemia) is one of the most serious consequences of HF exposure. As the free fluoride ion penetrates the skin it binds serum calcium forming covalent, nearly insoluble calcium fluoride (CaF2). This has effects on nerve conduction and can lead to extreme throbbing pain, metabolic changes, and even death.

Burning lungs suggest foaming to me.

Quite right, but HFl is usually produced in relatively small quantities alongside larger amounts of CO2, H2S and CO - Carbon Monoxide (according to Wiki) can result in Pulmonary Oedema and coughing up blood, so it seems more likely that it was a rather nasty cocktail of gases that did for them. They must have just got unlucky with where they camped, in a hollow or something that trapped the gas.

It does indeed.

I've inhaled a little chlorine gas and it was extremely unpleasant. Must have been a bloody horrible way to go for those kids.

Did it affect your sense of smell? I got a whiff of HCL way back when I was in school and it knocked mine out for a week. :p

Not that I remember. The main effects I noted were the coughing until my throat bled and a couple of hours of violent vomiting.

Like I said, I don't imagine those kids had much fun.
