If you have a proper structure in your house anyway and actually enforce rules.

Now stop being violent to your kids http://nsweb.nursingspectrum.com/cfforms/GuestLecture/Playing911Game.cfm

nice... you take a very serious and heartlifting story and focus on ONE line.

Nevermind that it shows how important it is to train your children on how to react in an emergency...

Nevermind it shows how you can make important lessons fun and easy for your children to understand...

anyway, Kudos to Hayden the Hero! :D

and what point is that? that Time out's used as punishments work? no one disputed that. (except if you noticed, the child still had to be coaxed for several minutes to open the door because he was afraid of being put into 'time out'.)

So what if the child said "I'll get a spank" would you accept that as the holy grail that Spanking works? I don't think so.

You proved that you can teach children how to do things? Amazing. That doesn't, however, prove that spanking as a means of discipline doesn't work, or that it's inherently bad. In fact except for one line referring to a time out, this topic has nothing to do with child rearing at all.

Fail.

But we need to breed. If NSG posters voluntarily remove themselves from the genepool the next generation is just going to be even dumber. In fact, NSG posters ought to be the only ones allowed to breed. ;)

That's precisely the point - the kid was obviously told not to open the door to strangers, and was following the rule. The time-outs meant he followed the rule. It's not his fault the parents forgot to teach him it's O.K. to open it to a police officer or ambulance man.

So what if the child said "I'll get a spank" would you accept that as the holy grail that Spanking works? I don't think so.

Nah, but so many people like to claim time-outs are a load of crap. Clearly they aren't when used properly.

Shooting discipline, for instance.

Sight picture, stance, trigger squeeze. All important for a child to learn.

Police say a man confronted Rose Ann Kozlowski and her 14-year-old son at their home, then bound them with neckties in the master bedroom, held them at knifepoint and threatened their lives. The intruder began ransacking the home for jewelry and other valuables, which he placed in the family's SUV. Meanwhile, Kozlowski managed to free herself and untie her son. She retrieved her husband's revolver, handed it to her son and locked the double doors to the bedroom. The incensed intruder pushed at the doors, partially opening them as he waved his knife. The teenager aimed his father's pistol toward the opening between the doors and squeezed the trigger. The armed robber dropped dead.

I'm a big fan of parents who avoid spanking and instead do whatever it takes to reason with their kid. I think that many people underestimate their childs intelligence. From my experience, kids raised by parents who don't spank have been more of a pleasure to talk to and deal with overall, than kids who get swatted for doing wrong.

I think I that I personally would not be able to keep from thoughtlessly swatting my kid out of frustration. I don't have to worry about that though, I am not having kids.

Clearly that child visited this thread, saw the new Rambo trailor, and learned from it. This is proof that it's best to teach kids that violence is the answer to all their problems.

And as far as teaching discipline:

If you have to spank your kid, you're doing something wrong.

It's extremely easy to manage children - they are often eager to please, and can be easily redirected.

I have five, and I don't have to resort to any form of physical punishment.

When I see other parents whacking their kids, I figure they're idiots.

(without the money stealing part:))

A bit to young to be thinking about kids, but there's nothing worse than seeing people being controlled mercilessly by their kids. People need to learn to say no, at some point the child is gonna get it, right?

Got any advice on how to train your kids? Seems like that's what you've been doing, which sounds like an excellent idea. Don't raise kids, train them! :p

1. Give your children your personal time. Floor time when they're young is critical. If you're not having fun with them, and talking with them they'll become strangers.
2. Just because you're friendly doesn't mean you're not the parent. Make this a clearly defined role.
3. Give them responsibility at an early age - and give freedom in exchange for responsibility.
4. Encourage self-reliance when alone, and encourage them to work together when they are together.
5. Young children respond best to a redirection if they are frustrated or misbehaving.
6. Allow them to think problems through - don't give them all the answers.
7. Regular family activities (actually, rituals) are important. While we don't eat every meal together, we ALWAYS eat Friday dinner together, and it's always roast chicken. You need more rituals than just the regular holidays.

Freedom for responsibility and a clear hierarcy were the main ideas I had. The ritual idea sounds like a great idea to bring some stability into your kids lives, which alot of kids seem to miss. Hope I will remember your advice and use it well when I have children. thanks alot for your advice! :D
