Being sick.

I'm sick today. I woke up with a sore throat and a headache ... I've caught a mid-winter cold.
There are obvious downsides to being sick: grumpiness, diminished capacity for work or thought or even recreation, pain, suffering and self-blame for not looking after the health. Discomfort and plain grossness, eg diahorhoea or phlegm. Lost wages, if you have that kind of job.
But it's been a while since I was this sick, and I'd forgotten that there are upsides as well. I'm a lot gentler on myself, more forgiving of myself, and my household are kind to me. And my body is recovering in other ways from the rest and relaxation, even though my respiratory system is a mess.
There's even more to it than that. I was lying in bed, watching the trees wave about out the open window, and I drifted into quite a blissful state. Partly it was a lack of energy to do anything, partly being half-asleep. But mostly it was utter acceptance, an almost meditative state of resignation. There was nothing I had to do, nothing I could do, but just let time pass until I get better.
So what do you say, NSG? Is it in any way good to be sick ?
Is it a natural thing which is a positive part of life ? Is it necessary ?
Anybody been so sick they had out-of-body experiences or anything like that ?
It gives me an excuse for my house being a mess (though it's a mess when I'm healthy too :p).
Once, I was really stressing about things, and getting sick gave me a chance to stop and rest a bit (in between trips to the toilet).
No, I've never had an out-of-body experience, but I have had out-of-mind experiences. :p

being sick has its advantages I suppose mainly the missing of doing any work, though you do have to sit indoors all day posting witty comments which is so different to what I do anyways :D
I for one usually find sex helps they have many cures to try ;)

There are indeed upsides to being sick. I just had my wisdom teeth out yesterday, and for the next couple of days I'll basically be able to order anyone in the house around. Also, while I didn't go off into any blissful half-awake state, I had several nice dreams last night. Being sick is, overall, fun for 2-3 days, before it gets boring.

I'm almost never sick. Even when I had a cold, it didn't affect me too much. (Okay, I had a big cough, and a throat full of mucus) I haven't been bedridden for a while, it's my immune system.

I'm not doing anything which involves getting out of breath. I went up the shop to buy lemons and honey ... that was bad enough. Sudden headache and dizziness.
Interestingly, almost everyone I saw seemed to have a cold, and people were unusually pleasant to each other as far as I could see ... except the pretty girl in the pharmacy. She was pissed-off.

Yeah. I'll probably feel differently in a few days and just want to be over it. Hopefully I will be.
It's when you start to get the energy back but it still hurts or makes you nauseous to do much ... that's frustrating.
You on pain-killers for that?

At the moment, yes. They're alright at keeping the pain away, and the pain was way overstated by the dentist in the first place. No side effects so far either, other then as I said I somehow managed to fit 8 quite entertaining dreams into 6 and a half hours of sleep.
Edit: Oh and the dentist also said I'd be off in la-la land for the two days supply I have of them. I even had my Pink Floyd and other assorted stoner music saved in a playlist, too. Lol.

So you're not so much sick, as high on meds ...
*is jealous*
I had my wisdom teeth extracted quite young, and I remember the pain not being that bad. The actual process was icky, my head being shook about and the crunching noises in my skull. Then the taste of blood for days.
Actually, I think the worst thing was the dentist holding up an x-ray neg and pointing to some white areas, saying "I can't be quite sure, but this could be a second set of wisdom teeth. Very unusual, but it can happen. You might need them out too, a bit later in life" or something like that. So far, no sign.

I guess I'm a bit high. It is rather nice. Not as high as I expected from all the hoops my mom had to jump through to get the meds, but overall not an unpleasant feeling. Oh and they knocked me out for the op. As for the taste of blood...not pleasant, but I do have about a dozen bowls of Jell-o, so when it gets too bad, I just eat another bowl.

You still are a kid. I'm still a kid at 17.
And being sick always sucks for me. Why? Cold medicine never works. Ever.

I had/have Diverticulitis... after suffereing though that, I managed to retrain my eating habits and I lost alot of weight.
I call it my diet plan that isn't recommended for anyone.

Had double odontectomy, teeth #38, #48 (lower third molars a.k.a. wisdom teeth).
Horrible. I had to contend eating macerated food for one week. I even invented mashed french fry salad with cheese.
Oh, and I absolutely dislike colds. I hate the sensation of my nose weighing like ten kilos.
And I hated chickenpox too. My dad sprayed Lysol into my room for thrice a day. I was close to saying, "You should've gotten me medicine instead of treating me like a virus, you know?"

I woke up with a mild head cold yesterday, which is almost gone. And aside from the nastiness of it (literally chugging on snot, the sore throat, the stuffy head...), it leaves me to do my own things while I'm off work. For instance, I don't have to ride my bike all around town with my brother and dad, which is nice.
But usually for me, being sick is just that: being sick. It's uncomfortable, and I wouldn't be the least bit saddened if illness were to be eliminated altogether.

I quite liked the anaesthetic they gave me when I hurt my back. I was numb from the waist down and it made me feel like my legs were falling through the bed. On the downside though they gave me some other fun anaesthetic to make me drowsy but it didn't knock me out. Instead I got to embarass myself horribly by telling some slightly dodgy stories to the anaesthetist who also happens to be one of my tutors

I just wiki'd that, it sounds pretty nasty. But losing excess weight is good in a lot of ways, so definite upside there.
I'm a vego, so I know how isolating it is to go out for a meal and not eat what everyone else eats. They get all stunned and drowsy and I'm still chirping away with "are you going to eat that sprig of parsley?"

I had an intestinal bacterial infection. After pluking for three days, I lost ten pounds.
Yuck. I had Guardia once, quite disgusting it was. Starving it out was the only thing that worked, but I've never had a lot of weight to lose. I got quite weak.
Had double odontectomy, teeth #38, #48 (lower third molars a.k.a. wisdom teeth).

Heh. The punchline is always so easy in retrospect. But you're quite right, chickenpox is a virus and Lysol only kills bacteria. Also, pneumatic chickenpox is rare. (This is not qualified medical advice, it's wiki.)

Riding for exercise? Kind of boring, and does nothing for the upper body.

As long as there are no "slightly dodgy" pictures, you can live that down.
I hope they fixed your back well ?

I feel a lot better today. Except that I feel like a whining sissy for thinking a simple head-cold is worth a thread.
Even if I don't feel I need it, I'll be spending some time in bed and reading a novel. I want to be over this as soon as possible, and who knows I might experience another blissful fugue-state.

Yup spinal anaesthesia but t'is as good as new-ish now. There may well be dodgy pictures since I stupidly allowed a medical student in to watch forgetting that I would be a little bit exposed from midway down my back to just below my ass
