www.dodgeball.com

This thing is so cool, all I can do is copy-and-paste from their FAQs:

What is it?
dodgeball.com is a new social networking site built specifically for mobile phones. (And it is free.)

What does it do?
The idea is simple: tell us where you are and we'll tell you who and what is around you.
We'll ping your friends with your whereabouts, let you know when friends-of-friends are within 10 blocks, allow you to broadcast content to anyone within 10 blocks of you or blast messages to your groups of friends.
For example, you're having drinks at Ace Bar. Send a text message to 36343 ("dodge") with the message "@Ace Bar" and we'll send out a text message telling all your friends where you are AND send you back a message letting you know if any friends-of-friends are within 10 blocks. If you have a camera phone, we'll even send you their picture.

How do you know who my friends are?
You need to tell us who your friends are, just like you did with those other social networking sites.

How is this different from other social networking sites?
dodgeball is designed to help you meet up with friends and friends-of-friends while you're out, not while you're sitting in front of your computer. Try it out, next time you meet a friend for drinks... tell us where you are and we'll let all your friends know of your whereabouts and alert you if any friends-of-friends are nearby.

I'm signing up. :D

I thought this thread would be about some awesome online dodge-ball game.

I'm disappointed because it's actually about something really stupid.

It works everywhere, from Washington to Florida, that's practically the entire world

(though I don't think I'd sign up even if it worked outside Planet U.S.)

If memory serves, advertising other sites is verboten.

Though it could just be other forums.

Or Dateline NBC.....

And why that name? Dodgeball and broadcasting your whereabouts via text message aren't remotely related. I suppose they're doing this for free, or are they small-printing the cost per...uh..."dodge"?

Very likely so. It wouldn't be the first time however, that they'd advertise that as working all over the country, and then stating that as 'working everywhere'. My point was that besides commenting on the concept, this is rather useless to the (minority/majority, whatever...) of us not in the U.S.

I'm not using this as an argument for questioning whether or not a thread like that ought to be commenced - after all, very few topics are universal, and since I'm posting here anyway, I guess the topic is justified.

Thus vanishes my point.
