"We are spreading toilet culture. People can listen to gentle music and watch TV," said Lu Xiaoqing, an official with the Yangrenjie, or "Foreigners Street," tourist area where the bathroom is located. "After they use the bathroom they will be very, very happy."

Let's hope so :D

Four stories, one thousand stalls. I just hope they have bowls and not just thost stupid holes in the floor.

I definitely hope the toilets on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors aren't just holes in the floor!

Some urinals are uniquely shaped, including ones inside open crocodile mouths and several that are topped by the bust of a woman resembling the Virgin Mary.
1. I hope the crocodile mouth doesn't snap shut.
2. Great - you can take a piss on the Virgin Mary. That's gonna have the Catholics flocking there.

Does anyone else find the fact that the acronym for Chinese State TV is CCTV, a tad ironic?

"Stupid holes in the floor".

Ever been to east Asia? Never mind the question, your OP says "no" loud and clear.

As a matter of fact, smart guy, I've been to China, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea (where I lived for about eight months). The first time I went to China I spent two weeks on a tour, and "stupid holes in the floor" were quite common. I remember the airport men's room at Xian, which was particularly disgusting and had nothing but, yes, "stupid holes in the floor." And in Korea I encountered numerous "stupid holes in the floor" at roadside stops.

The only thing "loud and clear" is your own ignorance. Not to mention presumptuousness.

And for those who have never been to East Asia, it's not just a hole in the floor. There's a porcelain fixture around the hole. But the bottom line (pun intended) is that you still have to squat down to the floor to take care of business. Disgusting.

This actually reminds me a trip to Thailand with my parents. My mother and I got there a week before my father so we decided to spend the time down south.

Anyway... rather than flying from Bangkok to Ko Samui, we too the overnight train down south and caught a ferry. I am all about seeing the real country and eating/traveling like a local.

My father is very well traveled - has been practically everywhere and seen everything, so it always catches me off guard on those rare times when its just my mother. I laughed so hard when she went to the toilet on the train - she came back a little mortified and whispered (like anyone on the train actually spoke English) that the 'toilet' was just a little enclosed room with a hole cut out in the floor.

I live in east Asia, and I concur with the OP. In China all toilets, bar ones in Western Hotels, are holes in the floor. When doing your business, physiologically they may be better for you, but aesthetically no effing way - especially if you have the trots real bad (which, first time in China, you prob will).
