And we don't gossip as much either.

I understand why they do it, but I really wish they'd run a study that wasn't composed only of college students before reporting these kind of things as facts.

College students are not representative of the population as a whole...not by a long shot.

Meh...it's not like I really care. Talk...or don't, it makes little difference to me, regardless of your gender. :p

Good point - college students probably aren't a representative group. I was wondering about that myself.

You Just Don't Understand
Good sociology book, even if a bit old. The stereotype doesn't come so much from how much anyone talks, but what they talk about and (more importantly) how they talk. :)

I never did understand that stereotype -- most of the guys I know are MORE than willing to talk your ear off while I'm more of a listener (or, pretending to be a listener :D ). I rarely talk -- and sometimes people mistake that and think that I'm mad at them or something. The more they know me, the more they understand that I'm just comfortable with being silent. That stereotype annoys the heck out of me though.

Now typing on the other hand... I hold more conversations online than in real life. Pitiful, I know... :(

Once someone asked me if I was mute because we had a whole conversation without me saying anything. I basically just nodded or shook my head or gestured or something. But it seemed rude that they asked me that. I'm just not really talkative unless it's a subject that I feel strongly about or unlesss I'm really tired or have something important to say.

Dude, stereotypes don't go away just because someone proves them wrong.

And, based on my experience, woman do gossip more. And my experience trumps a study based on college students. Give me a study with people of all genders, races, ages, and social classes, and then I will accept these things as facts.

I've heard the exact opposite, that women use more words per day than men, on average.

College students are not representative of the population as a whole...not by a long shot.

The BBC article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6269204.stm) on this says that the researchers 'bugged' the students - just think, half of the users of this forum might have had their conversations listened in to for this research. :p

I dislike these kind of polls, I mean who cares who talks more?
Its the kinda survey you can never collect reliable data for either, you could carry it out in a million different environments and get a million different results. The last time I saw a study of this it "revealed" the exact opposite of this one.

Personally I think its a lame attempt for sociology "professors" to try and pretend theyve done some work by presenting these "results" rather than admit theyve wasted their departmental budget on silly crap.

I thought it said that they did know that they were bugged but didn't know what time it would be recording... or something like that.

Aren't women more evolved then men at communication? I heard somewhere that they use 7 tones whereas men use 3, more words per minute and can understand a wider range of accents, talking speeds, body languages etc. Apparenty it's because women were gatherers in cavemen times so had more time for socialising, men were the hunters so rarely communicated.

Also aren't stereotypes what the brain uses to think of things? Like when you think of someone you know you can't think of everything they've ever done or everything they are so instead you think of something significant to you that they are or have done, and as far as i can tell this applies to everything. Doesn't this mean that it's impossible to get rid of stereotypes? As, in this case, you've produced the stereotype that women aren't generally more talkative than men to replace the old one.

That's very rude. You were being a good listener, you shouldn't get insulted because of it.

Aw. I'm sorry to hear that.

You should totally have stayed the course and answered in sign language, making clear what you thought of their behavior...

This one would've pulled it off::upyours:

That doesn't indicate that they're more evolved at communication. That indicates that they can't get their point across as well as men.

KO!

Yea i think this is a stereotype thats based more on truth than assumptions, obviously this probably means 49% of women talk less then 50% of men, but this still justifies the stereotype in some way. Maybe a D&D way of seeing this is best, women get a +4 to talkativeness, but each individual gets a 1d20 roll.
