Coffee vs. Tea
IL Ruffino

As Pete decided to discuss tea, I decided to discuss which is better: Coffee or tea?
Generally, which do you prefer more? Which do you consume more of?
I myself love coffee. Strong, dark coffee.
I'm probably the only person to ever get a coffee/espresso maker for my 16th birthday. :p

Pro plus mixed with coca cola is my version of a caffeine hit so coffee is out and I prefer my drinks to be cold so thats both of them out
Generally, which do you prefer more?
Tea.
Which do you consume more of?
Coffee.
Dang, I forgot I can choose two options.
Coffee. Simple, plain coffee with milk.
I'm not into those fancy "coffees" at all (well, excepting the Irish one ;))

At the risk of sounding like an idiot how is iced coffee made? Is it just made the normal way and then iced or just made with cold water?

I was too lazy to make the poll fit the two questions, so I just went with "Which do you prefer?"

Tea for all the time. Coffee for when I need that extra kick ... tea with the afterburners on.
If I really had to choose (desert island scenario) I guess it would be tea. I could drink more of it before having serious health issues arise.
Irrelevantly, my dad takes a pinch of salt in his coffee. I think that proves that whatever one is addicted to tastes the best and seems the right and proper thing.

Actually, if I have very nice Arabica coffee I don't let boiling water anywhere near it.
Put the coffee into cold water, in a pot. Put it on a medium stove and heat until (1) steam starts to issue, and (2) the floating coffee grounds go creamy (tan-coloured froth.) By that stage, the smell will be driving you crazy. It's apparently 87 Celsius, though I've never done it with a thermometer.
Then you just swill the coffee around, the grounds will settle to the bottom of the pot. It's not as strong as using really hot water, but preserves the delicate taste and aroma of really good coffee beans.
No-one has mentioned grinding the beans yet? Grinding them freshly makes a slight difference, worth it if they are really good beans.

But then that suffers from the problem of making the tea in pot not made out of ceramic or glass. Paper and metal tend to alter the taste of hot drinks I find. Tinned fruit is the best example. That zingy taste originally came from metal ions leaking into the syrup from the tin (though now they artifcially add the ions in during production).
So even the press in a cafetiere will change the taste of the drink slightly.
I haven't tried unbleached tea bags. I make tea in a cafetiere which solves the problem and makes great tea.You should try it. White paper is normally made white by use of bleach. Who wants to be drinking bleach, because will be drinking tiny amounts no matter how hard the company tries to wash the bleach out of the paper.

depends on the tea and depends on the coffee.
I've only once let instant coffee past my lips these past 5 years - and that was because I was desperate for a caffeine fix and there wasn't anything else. Otherwise - forget it. I've no idea how anyone can drink instant - it's taste bears no relationship whatsoever to espresso (my drug of choice - double espresso - occassionally Romano or Machiato).
However, good quality tea can be just as nice - sometimes better than coffee. By good quality, I mean brewed in a teapot for starters (not bag, thank you very much) and, more importantly, extremely top notch stuff. eg. Yunnan tea. Brilliant.

problem with those is that it boils the water into steam, and the excess heat can make the resulting coffee bitter. Best to have it on low heat, so the water doesn't scald the grounds.

Tea is weak and effeminate, like a female midget suffering from osteoporosis and kidney failure. I've tasted water with more flavor than your average tea.
So, obviously, I drink coffee. No sugar, no milk, no cream: just lots of beans and water hot enough to cause disfiguring facial scars should I feel the need to throw the pot in someone's face.
It's not an either-or choice and what I drink depends on context and mood. Sometimes coffee is better and sometimes tea is.

Tea. Either Yorkshire Tea (it is a brand), or Earl Grey. The latter with lemon and a sugar.
I quite agree regarding tea outside of the UK; only India, of the places I have visited beyond the UK, has ever made a decent cup of tea.
I do appreciate coffee, however. I simply prefer the taste of tea.

Tea. while I love the smell of coffee... I can't stand it's taste.

I definitely prefer a cup of good coffee, though I will drink tea if it's black (darjeeling!) or green, strong, and unadulterated by cream, sugar, milk, honey, and other such attempts to make tea taste like a latte.
I like both. It really depends on the situation, if I need caffiene, then I go for coffee (medium light roast black, anything darker needs sugar). I really like green tea though because it is yummy. Oh, and chai tea is also good.

Coffee tastes God awful.
Tea is delicious and comes in assorted flavors and colors.
The answer of course is tea.

Tea is for when you are feeling ill or want something hot before you go to bed. Coffee is where it's at.

Coffee. I've never liked tea. So coffee it is.
Especially when it's a hot chocolate/coffee mix... :D
Both coffee and tea are gross. I'll stick with a soft drink or lemonade if i want something other than water.

I love both - each has its place.
Coffee in the morning or with desert - tea when i just sit back on a rainy afternoon reading a book. Each has its time and place.
I think I'm going to have to cold-brew my coffee... but rather than shell out for a 'system' im just going to grind some beans and put them in a glass jar for 12 hours then pour it through a strainer. I like the idea of having a good coffee concentrate... make having a cup of coffee in the morning a little easier. Not so happy about the lower caffeine though.
When I brew a pot of coffee i like to give my beans a rough grind and add a generous pinch of salt (a pinch of salt brings out the flavor or whatever its added to) and maybe a little cocoa powder as well (especially with lesser beans). Put a touch of sugar in the bottom of the pot as well to take the edge off the bitterness. I try to make it strong and add a good dollop of cream to it.
A cold-brew concentrate though... it would let me add hot milk to get both the milkiness without loosing proper coffee strength. (No, I am not going to get up ass-crack of dawn early to make espresso and add milk - at least the drip brew i can set on a timer the night before).

tea, hands down, coffee is hard on the system, although cafe latè and cappacinos are nice

Ugh! Refined cane sugar, carbon dioxide and flavouring. Tooth decay and diabetes! Plus, all your descendants will have extra toes.

Kinda like how smokers need to take nicotine to help them relax when nicotine as a drug does nothing to help you relax. All the drugs are doing in these circumstances are returning the user to a 'normal' state.
So if you reduce your caffiene intake then you might find that you feel more energetic and alert without the need for coffee or tea.
