Kiribati prepares for environmental evacuation

An appeal has gone out to church leaders in the Pacific to lobby their governments to accommodate environmental refugees from Kiribati in the future due to rising sea levels.

A panel of four judges convened by the World Council of Churches in Fiji will rule on Kiribati's submission seeking assistance from other countries by the end of the week.

The head of the Kiribati church delegation, Reverend Baranita Kirata, says his people are facing the threat of being inundated with sea water.

He says its intrusion has already affected freshwater supplies.

Reverend Kirata says homes on Kiribati have already been destroyed by storm surges and high tides, creating unexpected expenses for families who have to fix them or move inland.

He says crops have also been affected

For those who may not be too sure where Kiribati (pronounced KEE-REE-BUS, by the way) is, here's a map (http://archives.cnn.com/1999/ASIANOW/australasia/12/29/kiribati.millenium/map.kiribati.gif). (You may have heard of the Battle of Tarawa during WW2?)

Surprisingly, I knew where Kiribati is. :p

Wasn't sure how to pronounce the name, though ('til now :D). I had always pronounced it as "KEE-REE-BODY."

the gilbert islands i've heard of. i am pleased now to learn their own real name.

kiribati. has a much more pleasant ring to it then some anglo-euro sounding personal name.

i WAS hoping the link would give more details rather then just the source of the quote. i'll have to do some googling and wikipedia searching.

Personally, I foresee the creation of aquatic nomads - as the islands vanish into the ocean, the Poly- and Micronesians will once again take to the sea, living from fishes, rain, and what they can trade with the peoples of the pacific coasts.

Sooo romantic ^_^

They have had since the late 1970s. ;) Partly because Kiribati includes Banaba, the Line Islands and the Phoenix Islands as well as the Gilberts.

Ironically, "Kiribati" is the, well, "i-kiribatified" pronunciation of "Gilberts". They took the English name and changed it to make it sound better.

The Pacific islands are going under water - they'll need to move to New Zealand or Australia in the end.

Maybe it'll be like that bad movie, Waterworld. And when the whole world sinks into oblivion, the original Polynesian refugees will rule the world due to their mastery of the seas. Either that, or they'll get smashed by a guided missile frigate.

Polynesians can barely control a small island of their own population most of the time.

[QUOTE=Ariddia;12840947(You may have heard of the Battle of Tarawa during WW2?)[/QUOTE]

Tarawa... "Bloody Tarawa"... where in just a few days a mere 100,000 US Marines took an island with such natural defenses and so much fortification by the Japanese who occupied it, that the Japanese commander said it would take "1 million men 100 years to capture it"... Ooh-rah!

There is an old technology called "dam". Holland is the living proof thereof.

Water world!

In related developments, the governments of Tuvalu and the Maldives have announced they are changing their names to the Republic of Atlantis and the Emirate of Lemuria, respectively.

I once met a pommie guy who had been in the Ghurka regiment in Burma during WWII, then lived in Kiribati for 40 years, during which time he'd been part of their government. Fascinating man.
Adds nothing to this thread but just thought I'd share it with you lot.

Observation 1: When New Orleans flooded temporarily, NSGers mostly expressed outrage and sympathy.

Observation 2: When an island nation is flooded forever, NSGers mostly make bad jokes.

Conclusion: American lives and property are weighted higher on scales of importance.

Conjecture: American body parts and organs may be worth more on the black market than third world harvested body parts and organs.

ehhh...I dunno. I'd say American liver would be pretty fatty.
Though that does lead us to the idea of foie gras substitute.
