$O$ FROM MCCAIN
CASH-POOR CAMPAIGN COLLAPSING

By CHARLES HURT
Sen. John McCainJuly 3, 2007 -- WASHINGTON - Nearly broke, John McCain's presidential campaign slashed between 50 and 100 jobs, cut salaries for remaining staffers and announced yesterday its most disappointing fund-raising numbers to date.

McCain raised only $11 million during the past three months and has just $2 million in the bank to keep his campaign alive.

Most ominous for the "Straight Talk" campaign is that McCain - who built his reputation in the Senate steadfastly opposing wasteful government spending - announced yesterday that he may accept matching funds from the federal government to keep his campaign afloat.

"We confronted reality and we've dealt with it the best we could," campaign manager Terry Nelson told reporters in a conference call yesterday.

Nelson and senior strategist John Weaver blamed the campaign woes on "incorrect assumptions" about fund-raising abilities, a bad environment for Republicans and McCain's strong support of the immigration bill that many GOPers viewed as "amnesty."

Scott Reed, a longtime McCain ally who is not involved in the current campaign, told The Post yesterday that "the entire leadership" of the campaign should be fired.

"John Weaver could not run a bath," Reed said. "He destroyed McCain's chances of becoming president."

Well, from the looks of this, McCain is certainly not going to be President...

So...Is anyone surprised by this? Is there anyone who is disappointed that McCain is near broke and probably won't be the republican nominee, much less President? Or did we all know that McCain wouldn't make it no matter how much money he raised?

Whatever chance he had, I'm glad it's gone. Though he would have been better than Romney...

That's one of those horrible and even more horrible deals...neither one would have been all that great, so I'm glad McCain will end up dropping out.

Now we just need to get Tancredo eliminated and I'll rest a bit easier...

McCain's a pretty good fundraiser - I wouldn't count him out just yet. :p I'm for Newt, myself, but McCain's not a bad guy, from what I can tell. He has some appeal.

No no--we need Tancredo on the ticket. The Republicans would lose all 50 states, plus a couple that haven't even been formed yet.

Sure, you can say that, but you haven't had to have him as your Representative. Believe me, I don't want him on the ticket at all, just in case the absolute worst happens and he gets elected. I think I would have a heart attack.

Yeah. I've been there before as well--a "careful what you wish for" moment. Any chances of tossing him from the House in 2008?

I consider it repugnant that one NEEDS to be filthy rich (or at least convince filthy rich others to support you) to have a shot at the presidency.

I know, but this is America, and money counts for everything.

McCain should drop out of the race with some damn dignity, if he has any left. We know he won't win, the Republican caucus knows he won't win, and I should hope McCain knows that.

I think McCain gave up on dignity in 06. Back when he gleefully accepted the role of Bush's Bitch to get re-elected.

Personally, I date it back farther than this picture indicates, but if there were any question of McCain's dignity, I think this officially killed it in 2004.

Not enough of one...sure, there are people who would gladly vote against him, but too many idiots up here either vote straight Republican or--fuck forbid--agree with him entirely. :headbang:

On the topic, why's everybody so happy that McCain might not have the means to run anymore?

What's his political platform anyways?

I'm willing to bet that I'm not the only one here waiting for SC2 ^_^
