$O$ FROM MCCAIN
CASH-POOR CAMPAIGN COLLAPSING
By CHARLES HURT
Sen. John McCainJuly 3, 2007 -- WASHINGTON - Nearly broke, John McCain's presidential campaign slashed between 50 and 100 jobs, cut salaries for remaining staffers and announced yesterday its most disappointing fund-raising numbers to date.
McCain raised only $11 million during the past three months and has just $2 million in the bank to keep his campaign alive.
Most ominous for the "Straight Talk" campaign is that McCain - who built his reputation in the Senate steadfastly opposing wasteful government spending - announced yesterday that he may accept matching funds from the federal government to keep his campaign afloat.
"We confronted reality and we've dealt with it the best we could," campaign manager Terry Nelson told reporters in a conference call yesterday.
Nelson and senior strategist John Weaver blamed the campaign woes on "incorrect assumptions" about fund-raising abilities, a bad environment for Republicans and McCain's strong support of the immigration bill that many GOPers viewed as "amnesty."
Scott Reed, a longtime McCain ally who is not involved in the current campaign, told The Post yesterday that "the entire leadership" of the campaign should be fired.
"John Weaver could not run a bath," Reed said. "He destroyed McCain's chances of becoming president."
Well, from the looks of this, McCain is certainly not going to be President...
So...Is anyone surprised by this? Is there anyone who is disappointed that McCain is near broke and probably won't be the republican nominee, much less President? Or did we all know that McCain wouldn't make it no matter how much money he raised?
