Txt Speak!

God how I loathe text speak, ever since texting became cheaply available on a wide scale, everyone's been speaking in text speak! Could you possibly sound more retarded when you type "U" instead of "You" and "2" instead of "to"? Maybe retarded isn't the right word, but lazy is the right word, I mean it's just one or two extra letters! Now I know that I don't have perfect English, I make spelling and grammar mistakes, but even I would never speak in 'text' speak because unlike the people who constantly speak in 'text' speak, I would like to be taken seriously. I will be honest with you people, If I read your writing for the first time, and it's in 'text' speak, I will probably just ignore the rest and throw it in the trash. 'Text' speak need to be banned and people should be taught how to actually spell out and write in the proper language.

I happily type using 10 fingers and would just need a button, such as the Window button, to tap on accurate prediction - it might take a little practice but I suspect it would vastly speed up typing.

Yeah this annoys the hell out me, too. To get an apostrophe I have to bail out of the text entry area, select a new 'input language' (language!) called 'Symbols', and then scroll down into the second screen to find it. No wonder most people don't bother.

I've heard of kids getting so used to text, that they do use it in essays and tests for schools.
I really can't stand getting a text full of this crap, although I don't tend to mind the common ones that make sense; 'u', 'r', '2' and 'bc'...
But with all this ranting against text, I read an article one time where some etymologist or anthropologist or somebody basically said "Get over it. Language isn't stagnant and the stuff will one day be proper." So, maybe we are the wrong ones, I don't know.
On a related note, is it the same way with 'ebonics' or whatever you wanna call it, or is it the same thing with persons retaining their native language when they get to the U.S.? I personally don't have a problem with anybody speaking or writing however they wish. But at least for the foreseeable future, those who speak ebonics are going to have a hell of a time trying to get professional jobs. I'm with Bill Cosby on this one.
As far as Spanish or other native languages are concerned, I think it is very helpful to be bi-lingual, especially in the globabl marketplace. But even so, it is imperative for someboy to speak English according with correct grammar if they ever want to move above customer service.

It annoys me when people use when there is no need for it. Like on forums or IM. I only use it in texts when I've run out of letters and don't want to double the price by having two messages. My opinion of someone instantly lowers if they use textspeak a lot.

Unless you are on a monthly messaging plan,a text cost about 15 cents per message. (could be even more on a messaging plan if you don't use all of your message credits). Soo..the difference of a letter or two could equal 15 cents for the extra text. I don't call that being retarded or lazy..I call that being smart with your money. One letter is not worth it to me.
Now I know that I don't have perfect English, I make spelling and grammar mistakes, but even I would never speak in 'text' speak because unlike the people who constantly speak in 'text' speak, I would like to be taken seriously.
Don't know what you are getting at there. The whole purpose of shortened texting like that is that if you actually speak..it sounds the same.
'Text' speak need to be banned and people should be taught how to actually spell out and write in the proper language.
LOL....I really don't think these people don't know how to spell the word right. And if you are in school..yeah..most likely you were taught how to spell.
I use text speak sometimes in my texts. I see nothing wrong with it there. I have yet to hear somebody actually speak acronyms in person (as in LOL, TTYL,BRB).
And if somebody actually writes a paper in txt speak..then you aren't teaching them right and setting rules for the papers. Who in their right mind would write in shorthand if you give them a two page essay to write? If it does happen, all you have to do is not accept it. Totally banning seems pretty stupid. It has its purpose in certain things.

Text speak is a difficult issue. One the one hand, I loath 'u', '2', 'ur', 'you're' for your, 'your' for you are, not to mention the confusion of "there", "they're" and "their". On the other hand, the 'net affected me. For me, it is the use of domains instead of the countries. Since my fiance does that too, it is very hard to break the habit to write .de instead of Germany, .iq instead or Iraq, .us instead of USAnia and so on... Also I tend to use lol and rofl in text and speech. The other issue which makes communication much less easy is the use of insider speech and that is IMHO worse. There sometimes seem to by cryptonyms to make communication harder.

we can tlk in txt spk if we want 2, bitch
Second warning: knock off the flaming.
When you are using a cell phone, "you" is six more keystrokes than "u". "2" is the same as "to" but uses up one less character, which is handy when you have a limit of 150.

Yeah you try texting using correct spelling. I hate cell phones, but I understand where they're coming from and how is saying "U" different from "you"? They sound the same to me...
It's when people use text speak where there is no reason that pisses me off.

I do so abhor txt speak. Is it really excessive effort to hit a few more keys or buttons?
In any case, now that I have 300 text messages a month, what with my lovely contract having started, I can write messages with grammatical accuracy.

That said -- it's appropriate on phones. Write it in an essay you're handing to me for a grade, and I will flay your hide and devour your soul.
Wouldn't it be "l8r"? There's a T in "eight".
Txt speak is just license plate speak writ smaller and more ubiquitously. My license plate reads "SYNCP8D" -- "syncopated" -- because most of my favorite music-related ideas were taken.
Orly wilgrv? L2Intrnet nub.
It's nice to have if you have a phone where texting one, short sentence takes about 500 keystrokes.
I actually use proper grammar in text messages.
And do you sign it 'Yours Sincerely'?

When I'm in a forum, I try to maintain a high level of formal, sometimes verbose english, using proper spelling, capitalization, grammar and punctuation. Even in instant messenger conversations, I'm fairly formal, though I do drop the capitals and punctuation. Rather, I break the long statements up into pieces where normal pauses would occur.
(I choose not to capitalize certain things such as language names)
I often find myself asking what some acronym means because I don't keep track of them... thus eliminating any time saving qualities people think acronyms have. The only acronym I use myself is "ICBTYDKWTM". People always ask what it means and after I tell them, they usually see my point (first sentence of this paragraph) and stop using acronyms when I'm around (or completely, who knows). Oh, and that acronym is "I can't believe that you don't know what this means."
Unfortunately, I type really fast and make many mistakes, and like anyone, when I read over what I've written, I automatically skim... missing the errors. As a result I often find myself editing my forum posts several times.
