oh, the horrible itching

so mosquitos have decided that I'm their favourite person. I rarely ever see them and nobody I know has more than a bite or two, but I'm covered. I have (at last count) 15 on my left ankle alone.

Does anyone have suggestions for itch relief and/or mosquito repellant that doesn't involve spraying myself with deet wherever I go?

Also, why is it that they have injections they can give dogs to make mosquitos stay away from them, but such things don't exist for people?

Do you eat a lot of fruit? I know that when I go out, I always get swarmed by mosquitoes, because I eat bananas all the time. So maybe cut back on that before going out for the evening. Also, there is a natural oil from some plant, that is works like deet, but isn't smelly, nor as icky. I don't remember the name of it, but you should look for it online.

Here are some tips on mosquito bites:

I got nothing, but I know the feeling. But anything that's potent enough to drive away an Indian mosquito will work.

Eat more garlic. I hear that helps. If nothing else, the garlic will be good for you.

I find a solution of aluminium acetotartrate (called "Alsolsprit" here) alleviates itching quite well.

Cortizone cream?

Seconded,... though you might want some lavender/aloe vera cream with that too.

OMG, I have a small ring of mosquito bites around my ankles, and they are driving me INSANE.

And I've discovered that the only itch cure that really works for me is to scratch the sores into submission. Ice packs provide limited relief (in the same way that heroin would provide relief... yay numbness)

And I have nothing Italian to eat. :(

You know, I probably have enough bites in enough different spots to test each treatment and see how they actually do compared to one another...

Benedryll will kill the itch, as will ANY antihistamine. You can take either an oral one, or they make gels that soothe and kill the itch.

When I was really bad off a few years ago (I got thirty or more, my arm swelled up) they gave me that and suggested spraying on Solarcaine when the itch got so bad it burned.

Citronella? They also say that Avon's Skin So Soft is a protectant, too.

Yah! I think that's it. Thanks kat.

I was going to suggest the antihistamine medication, but wasn't exactly for sure if it worked with bites. I know the itching I get from allergies, is my eyes, so I thought that maybe different itches require different treatments.

So if I just take my allergy meds even on days that my allergies aren't bad I should be fine?

I'm beginning to wonder if it will be possible to ever make a thread where this sort of asking for nude photos won't come up...

If you feel seriously harrassed by it, i'd say so, and Im sure they'd stop. However though, it is disturbing that us men are so horny all the time.

If there's one Mozzie around, it chases me and ignores everyone else. So annoying!

Not sure if this will be much help, but my sister has found burning incense near the front door of her apartment helps keep bugs (especially bitey ones) from coming into the apartment. Doesn't do a thing about when you go outside, but...

And I know yer pain >.< Family roadtrip one time, and I went outside in the evening with shorts on for a quick walk down the street to get dinner. Probably had at least 15 bites on each leg >_o

I definitely have you beat for quantity there... 18 on my left ankle/half way up my calf, 14 on my right, a couple on each thigh (I don't feel like taking off my pants to count) 17 on each arm, a handfull on my back and stomach... the worst part is that I don't know when I got any of these, they seem to be accumulating, but I don't have any mosquitos in my house, unless they're all from sleeping at my bf's house (he doesn't have a screen in his window) although that would hardly explain the distribution (there are definitely more bites on areas of skin that are usually exposed (or near the openings of pant legs).

woot! What? You didn't know about antihistamines... I thought that was a given... However all it does it stop the itching, it doesn't stop the mosquitoes biting.

You should use creams in preference to pills so you have a lower dose of the antihistamine.

If the itching is really unbearable then the strongest antihistamine available is chlorophenamine maleate. Ask your pharmacist or doctor which brand name uses it where ever you live. It does have a side of effect of making some people drowsy though, and you can't drink alcohol whilst using it.

How do I know this? I'm heavy hayfever sufferer, and I tend to get bitten quite a lot as well. I have four different antihistamines in my bedside table >.<

I never had any antihistimines until this year. My allergies have been getting progressively worse the past while and I had a reaction to some body wash I bought earlier this year (which actually inspired the purchase of the allergy meds). I never used to be allergic to anything... and now I'm sneezy and stuffy nosed all the time in the summer. It makes me sad. :(

But yeah, I haven't really explored all the side effects of various antihistimines yet.
