But the general tone and aggressiveness, the name-calling and personal attacks are just taking all the fun out of it for me now. If it's not possible to have civilised debattes any more, not even on the first 3 pages of a thread, it's just pointless to post at all.

You're not the only one. I remember when this forum used to be as spirited and friendly as a pup and as insightful as a good movie review (this is a compliment...btw). No subject was taboo, not even relatively "trivial" things, and items would be discussed openly and thoughtfully.

But now, General has become as droll and nasty as Bill O'Reily, and is about as insightful as one of his bowel movements. Which is a darn shame...

The problem is that if a long-time generalite like Cabra leaves, that just puts more pressure on the remaining old-timers and mods to keep the standards high. I know how you feel. I took a several-months break from NSG too a while back, for the same reason. Nothing but trolling, viciousness, shallowness, and redundancy. But I really like to argue about issues, so I came back, even though I find fewer threads worth participating in than before. What keeps me here, despite the poor hunting, is that the best debaters are also still patrolling the waters, and at least I have a chance of getting into a good round of fallacy bashing with them once in a while. I'm here to watch good debaters work.

So I hope you'll come back too, when your brain and spirit are healed by a change of scene, because you are one of the good ones.
