Antiauthoritarianism?

Recently I was reading some news article about some misbehaving kid (don't bother asking for the link), and it said that the child suffered from ADD and antiauthoritarianism. Is this real? Is the dislike of 'the Man' truly a disorder? It seems rather ridiculous to me.

Huh. I had both of those as a kid. Still do, in fact.

Anti authoritarianism a disorder? I would consider it a virtue.

It would make sense if they meant the kid had an unreasonable urge to rebel against ANY authority unconditionally.

I don't remember where it was.
But I would agree with Andaras Prime, I consider it a virtue.

From what I recall, ODD is more along the lines of resisting even the simplest requests to the extreme. Not liking authority and that are on totally different.

Otherwise I think about everyone on NSG would be heavily medicated.

I've never really considered it a disorder. More like a personality trait.

Hmm, that seems more likely than what I was thinking.

It would be like when Calvin's parents try to get him to bed, except Calvin would be raging instead of protesting.

No; The like / blind obedience of authoritarianism / the Man... maybe.

But the dislike? As others have said, virtue.

Ahh, thank you. That really painted the picture for me.

No problem. Nothing like a pop culture reference to explain a complex psychological disorder.

Just like using Tyler Durden to explain MPD (or is it MPS??)...

Neither. It's dissociative identity disorder or dissociative fugue.

I dunno - three-year olds should probably fear The Man to some degree. :p A little disobedience is good, but I've seen a few kids in the supermarket with the whole constant tantrum thing, and it's bordering on disorder, I'd say.

Isn't that the new-ish term for split personality? 'Cause I heard that's basically a crock, though of course I'm no doctor.

No, "multiple-personality disorder" was the bullshit condition.

Actually, it's not really bullshit. Clinical psychologists started understanding the condition formerly called MPD, realised it was a dissociative disorder, and gave it a more accurate name. MPD diagnoses (is that the plural?) were largely subjective. Psychiatrists are able to diagnose DID much more objectively.

Now, "sexual orientation disturbance", (formerly called "homosexuality" in the DSM), that's bullshit.

Think about it, that name was clearly picked for humorous purposes.

Yes, that's right, now people with a "sexual orientation disturbance" are SODomites. I bet some psychiatrists are laughing their asses off right now.

Hm. Well, it still seems like Hollywood wants us to believe the whole "Sybil" thing exists, while they should probably present the reality instead. It's good that the shrinks are more unified about DID, as they seem to be.
