On Wednesday, 4 July 2007, the International Olympic Committee will meet in Guatemala City, Guatemala to decide which of three (3) cities will get to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. The candidates are:

Sochi (http://www.sochi2014.com/) is a Russian resort city, situated in Krasnodar Krai near the southern Russian border. It is located among the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Mountains overlooking the shores of the Black Sea. At 147 km, Greater Sochi is claimed to be the longest city in Europe.[1] As of the 2002 Census, it had a population of 328,809, down from 336,514 recorded in the 1989 Census.

Salzburg (http://www.salzburg2014.com/en/) is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg. Salzburg's "Old Town" with its world famous baroque architecture is one of the best-preserved city centers in the German-speaking world, and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The city is noted for its Alpine setting. It is the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for parts of the musical and film The Sound of Music. Salzburg is also a student city, with three universities.

Pyeongchang County (http://www.pyeongchang2014.org/eng/main.html) is a county in Gangwon-do province, South Korea and the third largest county in the country. It is located in the Taebaek Mountains region, and is home to a number of Buddhist temples, including Woljeongsa. The altitude of Pyeongchang is 700 m above sea level, with some areas over 1,000 m high.[2] The county is around 180 km to the east of Seoul, the capital of South Korea.

I'm not voting for Salzburg, because The Sound of Music is a really schmaltzy movie.

Salzburg would be fun. I'd like to see it in Jamaica personally. The Jamaican bobsled team finally gets it's revenge!

Salzburg. Though I wouldn't care any less as I live in a hot tropical country where we see ice only in the freezer; and that my country always suck during Olympics.

You never turn off do you? :P

I say South Korea. Austria is boring and I don't want the Russian government anywhere neat the tax revenue involved in the Olympics.

I don't really care about the winter olympics, but hey, if South Korea's on the list, i vote for them, even if it's just to piss off Kim-Jong-Il.

Salzburg.

Because the South Korean's already have a South Korean UN Secretary General under thier belt, and Russia well they had them in 1980.

I don't think Austria could afford it, though it would be my first choice.

Korean peninsula is just too unstable and it doesn't seem like that will change soon.

That leaves Russia by elimination. Although the town seems small for such an event.

South Korea: perhaps we can extract several free-trade agreements from them in exchange for our support in the matter.

LMAO

What's with all the anti-Russian sentiment? Also, I don't think lil' Kim gives a shit if the Olympics are just south of him. It may create some tourist revenue for his country. Furthermore, both Koreas compete under a united team so this really wouldn't piss him off.

Erm... South and North Korea have a united team (http://www.pyeongchang2014.org/eng/html/sub2/sub2_08.html). North Korea is backing the South Korean bid.

You really have no idea what you're talking about, do you?

LOL. At least that would be original.

Congratulations to Sochi, Russia. Korea presented a very nice bid, but Putin's personal visit and Russia's being new to hosting helped. Putin also promised a 5-minute walking distance from the hotels to the venues for the athletes. Furthermore, this will allow Russia to upgrade its sports venues, many lost from the breakup of the USSR, making for better Russian Olympians. :)
