The Secret

I saw The Secret last night. It was a huge steaming pile of bullshit. They start off by citing a bullshit "scientific" law- The law of attraction. This law has no basis in science whatsoever. They proceeded to present their bullshit ideas as facts, without a shred of evidence. Then they presented some anecdotes. Then continued with bullshit ideas. The problem is, my uncle and his wife, who showed me the movie, really believe it. I argued with them about it for an hour until they pulled the "you're too young to understand" argument. I can refute the whole argument of the movie with a single thing- Why arent I having any sex?

What did everyone else think of the movie/book? Was the book just as much bullshit as the movie?

The Secret: how to make money with fluff and an advertising campaign that depends on people being very very insecure.

I've read the book. I thought most of it was not possible, but it can't hurt your life to think positively can it?

Never wasted my time with that particular waste of time.

The universe can't hear you. Even if it could it doesn't give a shit.

Now that that's out of the way, usually people give up too soon, that's what hope it for. Positive thinking works to an extent, but making money out of it and making people believe stuff like this is just wrong.

Yeah I have seen it, and it's the same as all the other telemarketing Indian-on-the-phone scams.

The Secret:
Step 1: Write a book about how to make money

Step 3: Profit

The gist of it is that if you think really really hard and believe you have something, the universe delivers it to you.

Here's a short biased video.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q__fc7NKwlY

Ah. Allow me to respond by taking this copy of that book and defecating on it.

Have you tried asking them what the Law of Attraction is? They should spit of some sort of overly arcane language meant to confuse idiots like your parents, or a formula. ie Newton's Law (having three is really a waste, as the second precludes the other two) is that the sum of the forces on an object is equal to the time rate change of the object's momentum, or ΣF = dm/dt

If you listen to them, it's apparently some entity that can draw magic power from your thoughts.

Archangel is it possible?

The Secret: As long as Evolution and/or God hasn't gotten around to the weak, we might as well steal their money. I wonder if this lady may start another belief system. Though the name "Scientology" is already taken.

Was it as bad as what the bleep do we know? The fact that people take that movie as gospel (or as anything other than the pseudoscience which it is) I find personally offensive.

On the topic, I feel this is appropriate (replace faith with pseudoscience - I feel it still holds true):

I've only ever heard people bitch about it, never actually read or seen it. But if people are even being half fair, then it sounds like some destructive crap.

If wanting really really hard yielded anything I would be ripping up and down the coast in a sunshine powered, rainbow emitting Porsche GT-3 right now.

As it is, I can't even manage to get both my VWs to run at the same time.

I think pretty much any self-help campaign is garbage. Especially sex or relationship based ones.

Seriously, if you REALLY need help, go see a therapist. Otherwise, it's probably just you making something out of nothing.

Perhaps if I wished for it really, really hard as well? Of course, first I'll need your full name, address, and credit card number.

The Secret and Joel Osteen both preach the virtues of Cosmic Welfare:

Believe and act like you're entitled to everything long enough and you'll get it handed to you no questions asked.

Then again it's the same religious denomination where a lifelong pedophile serial killer can avoid damnation at the last second by "accepting Jesus Christ as savior."
