Musical battle for your soul: you decide

The Nazz

Who gets it--Satan, here represented by Marilyn Manson, or Jesus, represented by Stryper?

To make it fair, I tried to pick the two suckiest bands I could think of that seem to have an orientation (Jesus or anti). Take the poll, and if you have other suggestions for the options, please make them known in the thread.

I really don't mind Marilyn Manson. He's not great, but he's not really as bad as, say, Metallica or Slayer, let alone some shitty Britteny Spears clone.

Having never heard Stryper before, I have to admit that they are not bad either. More Hair Metal than is my taste, but they beat the hell out of all the Christian Rock groups posted on the other threads.

In the long run, Manson wins on account of having more thoughtful lyrics.

Never heard Stryper. Marilyn Manson's kind of obnoxious in interviews, but of the two or so of his songs I've heard, I'd say he's sort of a C-Minus singer, with a B-Minus band backing him up, which makes him relatively talented for appearing on a Top-40 station. :p

I find the prospect that you just pegged your neighbor in the head with your shoe whilst he was beating it against a tree in your front lawn much more amusing.

Stryper's lyrics must really suck then, because all of Manson's lyrics read like the musings of some whiny teenager who just lost his virginity. The lyrics are better than the music, but only because they're so bad you have to laugh.

Utterly despise it. I'm a synthenesiac, and thrash metal physically hurts me.

Their lyrics are chock full of cliched phrases and cheesy nonsense.

Manson is fucking terrible. His music is so fucking shit, his lyrics are just pretentious psuedo intellectual bullshit. He's boring, his music is extremely crappy, he is a terrible singer. Slayer are exiting and don't buy into this goth shit, mettallica have street cred and their old stuff was good.

Besides, Marilyn Manson isn't, by most definitions, a goth band. Sure, maybe a smattering of goth influences, but it's mostly alternative metal. He's also probably somewhat responsible for a huge number of goth kids winding up harassed or put on a bomb threat list or generally hassled. (Last time I checked, traditional goth bands like the Cure, for example, weren't exactly causing a lot of paranoia.)

Definitely. I don't like it.

Seriously, I wouldn't even use "pseudo-intellectual" to describe the lyrics. "Immature" is a much more accurate word, in my opinion.

"Street Cred"? I don't give a fuck about street cred. Manson's music is better than any trash metal group (like I said, thrash metal is painfully agressive posturing nonsense used by stupid white Marines trying to copy hardcore who didn't understand anything), even though it isn't very good. His lyrics certainly beat the shit out of Metallica, even though, once again, there are better lyricists than him by far. See, this piece (http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Rock-is-Dead-lyrics-Marilyn-Manson/D58076E026D80ED4482568C10003A2C2) is more incisive than anything that Metallica ever wrote.

I'd say half the bands on the planet earth are better lyricists than him. For god's sake, I think DragonForce has better lyrics.

I'd dissagree. He's not as good as some other lyricists: he certainly could work on a bit more subtlety in his presentation, but he certainly raises relevant and real points.

I don't see anything special in his lyrics, but lyrics mean fuck all if the music behind it is shit. It's actually possible to have a good time at a metllica gig, not at a manson gig. If it's only about the lyrics, he should become a poet or something similar.

Lyrics mean as much as music. Music means fuck all if there isn't a point. The idea that one should only listen to music (and Manson manages to nose out shit like Metallica with no problem) for the sound is silly.

You wanna talk about a point, let's take a look at some really incisive vocal Jazz? A modern example might be pieces like From the Plantation to the Pentitentiary. In classical music, we can talk about any number of Operas that made real and substantive points, or we can just talk about Beethoven melding politics and music.

And, yes, a lot of pretty, but pointless pieces in classical music were just entertainment.

I did address it. Beethoven made points in non-vocal music. It isn't impossible, but it is a lot harder.

So if the song has no lyrics in it, it's just pointless entertainment? You do realise you are calling some of the most important pieces of Jazz and Classical music pointless entertainment right?

Okay, fine.

How do you make points in non-vocal music? It's not like a violin can explain the inherent flaws in a class-based society or something.

I don't have much time, since I need to leave, but I'll offer up Beethoven's 5th Symphony as a discussion of fate. The first movement, specifically, considers the inevitability of fate, as the motiff slowly drives the "hero" from hiding.

Oy! Metallica has some good stuff - James Hetfield is one of the greatest guitar players I know, and what other heavy metal band would have the balls to tour with a fucking symphony orchestra? Have you even heard Nothing Else Matters or Unforgiven? Take that back, you bastard!:p
