Cool. But thats so strange! How can a sea get frozen so quickly before the waves even break?

Indeed. I don't think that should be.

Wouldn't work. Running water isn't going to go "wooossssssshhhh- *frozen*", especially not salt-water, which I would assume that is. It would take a major flash freeze to do that, I'm talking kill-anyone-in-the-vicinity cold

Erm, sea water does freeze over from time to time. I'd guess that most of the northern coast of Russia, for example, has ice along most of its beaches in winter. Also, the Baltic Sea tends to partially freeze over once every extra harsh winter. Doesn't take a flash freeze, all it takes are low enough temperatures. *shrug*

Yeah and i've seen frozen sea before. But it looks nothing like that, it's completely flat.

I'm not sure I'm following.

The only thing that's actually frozen through in this picture is the "white stuff", i.e. the shallow parts in the first and second picture, which sure look flat to me.

The wavy grey stuff is water, not ice. From the looks of it (and from what logic dictates) it's infused with lots of small pieces of ice (hence the sluggish, thick look I mentioned above) but it's not actually frozen stiff in the shape of a wave or anything.

You can perfectly see the small ice pieces turning the sea into a big bowl of slush in the fifth picture.

Yep, I was waiting for someone to say that. Also, what everyone is forgetting in this whole exercise is that there should not even be ice in that water, Cape Town is about 35 South, and ice has to the best of my knowledge, not been seen that far north before.

Also, there was snow in Johannesburg this week for the first time in twenty-five years - I believe the Southern Hemisphere is going to have another one of those cold winters like last year.

How do we know the waves are frozen? Everything is frozen - it's a still image. Now, if we had some video - maybe then we'd get a better sense of what this is intended to convey.

You mean how do we know the waves aren't frozen, right?

Looking at the pictures helps tremendously in that regard. :p

Still photos of waves tend not to move. If you're trying to impress people with frozen waves, still photos don't cut it.

Unless you're suggesting I set them up as a flipbook to give the appearance of movement. Richard.

The waves are not supposed to look frozen because they are not frozen. The only "waves" that are frozen are the white ripples right up on the beach.

The moving water is just infused with lots and lots of small pieces of ice, i.e. in the process of maybe eventually freezing over.

I know, I'm sorta deliberately missing your point but I just wanted to drive home again that the stupid waves are not frozen as one can clearly see by, oh, looking at the pictures. Gnarf.

You're still free to make them into a flipbook, of course. Richard?

Who's been spraying foam about? I haven't quite worked out why the railing 'icicles' are so pointy, but it could be an art installation.
