What is the appeal of Pro-Wrestling?

Why do so many people watch? Why do so many people cheer on a bunch of guys in tights grabbing on eachother? Why is it that even though we all know its fake (And for those of you who don't, I pity you) people tune in to watch it every monday.

This phenomenon is also shown in the Benoit family murder-suicide. The way these wrestling fanatics clamor to the now deceased Chris Benoit is fascinating.

So, knowing that it is fake and looks like crap, why do so many watch pro-wrestling? Why are so many fans so adamant and almost religious when it comes to wrestling 'superstars'?

Why do you watch movies? they're fake... but people still find them entertaining.

Everyone knows it's fake, even the wrestlers... but just because it's fake it doesn't mean it's not fun, nor dangerous.

Martial arts films are fake, yet people are still injured even with all the safety precautions in place. Wrestling doesn't have those safety features. ever watched a Hurricarana being performed? Even the simple moves like a suplex can be desaterous if not performed perfectly. Fake? yes. Dangerous? Defenatey.

As for what I like about wrestling? Well, my co worker talked about Chris Benoit's technique and curious, I tuned into Smackdown for a looksee...

However, what won me was watching Chyna Gorilla press a male wrestler (Regen I think it was) for even tho I knew it was fake, and even with the other wrestler's cooperation, it's still impressive to see a woman lift a man high over her head and drop him to the mat with no cables or other obvious safety features. Then I saw Lita give someone a Hurricanrana and I was hooked. I know it's fake, and yes, you can tell when the injury is real or planned.

a couple of weeks later, my sister saw one episode and she asked "is it always like this?" after I nodded she replied "It's a soap opera!" I nodded again and added "the only difference is that instead of hopping into bed, they beat the crap outta each other."

so yes, Professional Wrestling is a Soap Opera for men. :)

Never understood it. I'd rather watch a good, solid boxing match any day.

Never really understood the appeal of boxing. Why limit a persons fighting ability to just their fists

Professional Wrestling is the only faith-based sport, so it's got a built-in credulous demographic.

It's like a soap opera, but with less sex and more violence.

which consisted of.... two girls grinding their bodies and kissing... that's not hot lesbian action... that was Hot Lesbian Teasing. :p

and I wonder how many people would be watching as the team "Right to Censor" were getting their @$$'s kicked almost every night. :D

Makes it more interesting if you're "limited" like that.

Now, Sumo wrestling - that is just insane. :p

Wouldn't that be monster truck racing?

Aren't they both basically the same,... different type of "muscle",... same attitude.

And it's probably not Lupus either.

I much prefer K-1, Pride or UFC, although UFC is too much show with caged in rings and such for my taste. I think its awsome to see Muay-Thai vs. MMA or similar battle it out. Modern day gladiators, if you ask me.

No.

I enjoy monster truck racing.

I don't give a poop for wrestling.

So it can't really be that.

I use to watch NWA back in the mid 80's when I was like 12. Back when Rick Flair, Terry Blanchard, Ole and Arn Anderson, Ivan and Nakita Koloff, The Road Warriors, Rock n Roll Express, Dusty Rhodes and Magnum T.A. were popular. My favorites were Dusty Rhodes and Magnum. Rarely watched WWF where Hulk Hogan was. But I remember Jake the Snake Roberts, The Boogey Man and Andre the Giant. They were cool hehe. Was pretty entertaining back then. I don't regret watching it at all. But I wouldn't watch wrestling now. I've stopped and looked for a bit at the new wrestling while channel surfing a couple of times to see if I could stand watching it, but .. just not my thing.

Meh, I'd say gratuitious and unnecessary violence, but that only really applies to the matches when they're allowed to hit each other with garden furniture.

But seeing how it influenced your imagination - my work here is done. :p (Nope, can't say I'm sorry, either!)

It's one of the few remaining forms of live improvisational theater. It's actually very similar to the Commedia dell'arte.
