UNESCO agrees with Poland, renames Auschwitz
WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- UNESCO designated a city in Iraq where mosques have come under attack as an endangered world cultural treasure Thursday and revised its name for the Auschwitz death camp in Poland to emphasize Nazi Germany's role.
The United Nations' heritage group also took the unprecedented step of removing world heritage status from Oman's Arabian Oryx Sanctuary site, home to the rare antelope.
UNESCO also named several new world cultural sites, including the Sydney Opera House, the Iwami Ginzan silver mine in Japan, the Parthian Fortresses of Turkmenistan and the Red Fort in New Delhi built by Mogul emperors.
In inscribing the archaeological remains in the Iraqi city of Samarra on the World Heritage List, UNESCO did not mention the Iraq war, but said the site was listed as "in danger."
Insurgents have repeatedly targeted holy sites in Samarra, a city 60 miles north of the Iraqi capital. This month they blew up the minarets of the Askariya shrine, and in February 2006, insurgents destroyed the Shiite shrine's golden dome, setting off deadly sectarian violence in the country.
The Samarra site stretches along the eastern bank of the Tigris River and includes the 9th century Great Mosque with its 170-foot-tall spiral minaret. The 26-mile-long site "testifies to the architectural and artistic innovations that developed there and spread to the other regions of the Islamic world and beyond," the U.N. committee said.
Auschwitz now will be known as "Auschwitz-Birkenau. German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1940-1945)," said Roni Amelan, a spokesman for UNESCO's World Heritage Committee. Previously the camp was listed on the U.N. agency's registry as the "Auschwitz Concentration Camp."
Poland, which was subjected to a brutal Nazi occupation, sought the name change to ensure that people understand it had no role in establishing or running the camp where the Nazis killed more than 1 million people, most of them Jews.
The camp was made a World Heritage Site by the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1979.
The oryx sanctuary is the first site struck from the world heritage list since UNESCO's 1972 Convention for the protection of the world's cultural and natural heritage entered into force, spokesman Roni Amelan said.
"The World Heritage Committee deleted the property because of Oman's decision to reduce the size of the protected area by 90 percent, in contravention of the operational guidelines of the Convention," he said in a statement.
The committee noted that in 1996 there were 450 Arabian Oryx antelope on the site, but poaching and habitat degradation has seen the tally dwindle to 65.
"The committee expressed regret that (Oman had) failed to fulfill its obligations regarding the conservation of the sanctuary as defined by the World Heritage Convention," the statement added.
Other sites added to the list include the Lope-Okanda landscape of Gabon, the Richtersveld mountainous desert of South Africa, the rock carvings of Namibia's Twyfelfontein region and 1,800 fortified tower houses in China's Guangdong province.
The Teide National Park on the island of Tenerife and ancient beech forests in central Europe were also designated World Heritage sites, and a protected area of Switzerland's high Alps site of Jungfrau-Aletsch Bietschhorn was nearly doubled in size. The committee also listed the Mehmed Paa Sokolovic Bridge of Visegrad, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Canada's Rideau Canal and Greece's old town of Corfu.
On Friday, the committee added its final sites for this year: a Roman-era fortified palace in Serbia, a rock art landscape in Azerbaijan and a university campus in Mexico.
The central campus of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico is "a unique example of 20th-century modernism integrating urbanism, architecture, engineering, landscape design and fine arts."
The committee called the fortified palace compound of Gamzigrad-Romuliana in Serbia "a unique testimony of the Roman building tradition" in its "intertwining of ceremonial and memorial functions." The Gobustan rock art cultural landscape of central Azerbaijan, meanwhile, was called "an outstanding collection of some 6,000 rock engravings bearing testimony to 4000 years of rock art."

Poland has a legally elected democracy. Sorry, they get some blame for electing these people, that is unless these people have gone on to do things illegal according to Polish law/constitution, which you don't elect people to do (that's how the Americans who voted for Bush get off, apparently, well, that and we didn't elect him in 2000).

Let's see... the voter turnouts in both elections were below 50%: Most Polish people did not even vote. Then the Party that forms the current government did not get the majority of the votes, just more then other parties. Then Kaczynski promised that even though he would run for president, his brother, also involved in politics, would not become prime minister he lied.
Oh, and don't forget current approval ratings are as low as 20%.

You = the Polish people, and yes, they did elect these people. That is why they are in office. Unless you are trying to suggest voter fraud. Do you have any evidence of that?
As for Bush, prior to 2004 we actually had NOT elected him, and it was a case of voter fraud. After 2004, we had elected him, and we are responsible partly for his actions. I say partly because he has at this point violated our laws and constitution, and you cannot elect a leader to do those things, therefore he is no longer acting as an elected official.
Has the Polish government violated Polish laws or the Polish Constitution? Are they guilty of voter fraud? If not, you (the Polish people) are responsible for the choice you made.

Honestly, they don't object to this (they hardly could) but they see it as a part of anti-German campaign rather than as an attempt to clarify things for the uninformed, and their attitude is produced by the efforts of the current Polish government that sees anti-German rhetorics as a way of gaining popularity. The government's been rather quiet and diplomat about the matter, effectively talking about 'Wanting to improve relations with Poland' when the K... whatevers chose to warn about Germany once more falling to extremism, and from what I can tell, public opinion is 'Mild amusement' more than anything (Unless you talk to ex-silesians, anyway).
It's of course arguable whether this is the true reaction or whether it's simply holding back because Germany simply cannot get loud without raising a shitstorm int he rest of the world - but by and large, I'd say that the K-brother's efforts are mostly vasted, not only in Poland, but on the toehr side of the border, too.

Germany is the last country in the world I would want to piss off.
2 weeks later in Auschwitz
German Soldier: "Was ist es namen!"
Poland Guy: "Auschwitz-Birkenau!" *sobs*
*My German sucked when I was learning it, that was two years ago.*
You know my German sucks too and I finished it a month ago:D("studied" it six years)
Oh, crap no. It looks like subtitles for american tourists.
Anyways the last thing the world needs is another debate on the Nazis.

Thank you, I prefer to remain unspohisticated and uncivlised. Whatever it is, must be detrimental to the mental capabilities if it produces the likes of you.
Oh, c'mon! I was joking, just in case you didn't get it.
I'd say that the K-brother's efforts are mostly vasted, not only in Poland, but on the toehr side of the border, too.
I'm really relieved to hear this from independent source.
'sides, you're doing a pretty good job at revising the image of Poland yourself, even if it only reaches a handful of Germans.
Thank you. I believe that the more people know of Poland (yes, including the things I'm not proud of) the better its image will be.
Oh, c'mon! I was joking, just in case you didn't get it.
I admit that my sense of humour failed me completely there. Maybe the joke was not as obvious as you thought it to be.

The amount of stupidity here really amazes me from both sides. For one, I am of Polish decent. If they want to change the name, who really cares?
Blaming it all on Germany, yeah, they were the ones who built the camps, invaded the country and put millions of people there. I dont remember hearing that anyone else was involved with it.
Brothers being leaders of a nation, pretty stupid I know, but saying they are Polish doesnt explain why they did it. Thats like saying because Russians are Russians they installed a dictator that killed 30 million people, or because people from Zimbabwe constitute them having put in a ruthless dictator they cant get rid of.
Polish crimes against the East Germans, wow, this cant get much dumber can it. I take it you have a PhD in history...................idiot....
