Advice for a Linux Newbie?

So, I have a PS3 and a brand new 42" 1080p television, and playing around with pictures and videos has been pretty cool... but I quickly became frustrated with the PS3 Internet browser (and I also want to toy with some other apps), so I decided to install a second OS.

Basically, that means Linux Yellow Dog... which is fine. I've always been curious about Linux, but I've never really had a reason to use it. Now I do.

So, my question to all the long-time Linux fans out there: any advice for a newbie? Any "must-have" apps? Anything I should know that I'd kick myself in a month for not knowing?

So far it's been fun, at least after I managed to get the wireless networking up and running!

Thanks! :)

I am almost strictly Ubuntu because it's like Linux for idiots.

I have red hat on an old machine because of nostalgia reasons and I am too lazy to repartition it and put something better on.

As far as the most needed apps. I am a girl, and so I say Tux paint!

I would also like to know how stable are Linux OS, and can you run window based games on them?
