I can no longer defend the USA anymore

I am sitting here writing code and I have the TV for noise in the background.

I look up to see in big bold bright yellow letters "Breaking News"

It's an announcement that Paris Hilton will be let loose around midnight. There are many many reporters hanging around the jail.

It just stuns me the attention this dimple head gets. It just stuns me people are soooo interested in her and are making it sound like she was a decident who was just freed from the Gulag.

One thing that is keeping me from thinking that we need to nuke this country is the fact that nobody is giving her money for an interview. Barbara Walters refuses to meet with her.

Ugh! Back to coding!

I thought Larry King was going to do the interview..

Either way, I agree completely - our media's priorities are insanely out of whack. It's nothing new, really, and it was probably worse last century, but it's not getting better recently. :(

I dunno - it seems most people are rightly fed up with the minute-by-minute in-depth coverage of complete nonsense by our media. I haven't seen too many defenders of it here.

Yeah, that little detail seems to be conspicuously absent from the press coverage of this thing - drunk driving is no joke.

It's just that?

I'll give you another one about the great Western Culture, homeland of Freedom and Right and Justice for All etc.

Italy, one month ago.
We have a law about drugs here, that states that if you carry with yourself more than (cannot remember exact quantity, let's say 1 g) of cocaine, it is too much for your personal use - you will be charged with illicit drug dealing instead of getting a fine for possession of illicit drugs.

A rich businessman was caught by the Carabinieri with cocaine 20 times the quantity limit. At the trial, he defended himself saying that, since he's rich, he can afford buying more cocaine for his personal use on a single deal, so he can stock it and go to the dealer with lesser frequency, thus avoiding contact with "criminals" (note, he should be considered a criminal, too, shouldn't he?) and lessening the risk of being caught by the police.

You guess what? He's free. The judge ruled in favour of the defence. That is, all people are equal in front of the law, but rich people are more equal than others.

I would like to vomit, but I'm getting used to such filth.

You cant defend the USA anymore because the news companies are run by dumbasses?
'Cause, y'know, I've heard just as many people complaining about their crappy coverage of real news as I've heard discussing the events of OMG (random celebrity) IS RAPING BABY PENGUINS.
Although I wouldnt be too averse to nuking Washington.

Which reminds me, I happened to glance at Fox News over breakfast (parents watch it, not me >_>;) and somebody was proposing to take funds from the wall around Mexico and use it to build a wall around Washington DC.
I thought it was a damn good idea, myself.

Well? I have the crazy desire from time to time to watch news and see what's happening in the world. My long term memory doesn't work much anymore and I forget how bad the US news system has become. Infotainment I think is the term these days.

Whoa! You're taking me seriously. Don't do that or I will have to release my POTP ferret (I caught the one that came for me.) Didn't mean you were stupid, just a hybrid of "it's the quarterback, stupid" and "television stops you thinking."

My long term memory doesn't work much anymore and I forget how bad the US news system has become. Infotainment I think is the term these days.

Nothing of mine works much anymore (didn't take a lot of care in my twenties) but I haven't watched live TV in weeks and feel better for it. It is startling how little even of the shows I used to love is worth watching, once they are on tape and I don't have the incentive of "I'll miss it if I don't watch it."

I used to have the silly thing on all the time, exactly as you said "for noise." It seemed to improve my concentration time, but I realize now it did that by preventing me concentrating so hard.

Then I noticed that I was believing things I couldn't remember hearing or reading, for instance that Dorothy the Dinosaur actually has a bloke inside.

I usually have Jazz, Professor Longhair, Ella Fitzgerald, Ella and Duke at the Cote D'Azur, Billie Holiday.....

I couldn't hack that! I'd get all cheerful :p

LOL. Paris Hilton does not need to be paid for interviews. She is filthy rich and that is the real reason why people wanted her in jail.
She was not treated fairly at all in this situation.

A white girl goes to jail for violating probation. An illegal immigrant runs people over while driving without a license or insurance and doesn't even get one day in jail, no community service, not even a slap on the wrist.

Paris isn't a criminal. Illegal aliens are and rappers are.

Well, actually screenwriters were part of what was frozen out of reality tv and instead it's 'scripted' by associate producers, who now think of themselves as writers...which makes them a tad more irritating then they would be otherwise...

Interesting! Did screenwriters need qualifications, distinguishing them in some way from associate producers? Or is it some difference in the process of 'scripting'?

I know nothing about reality TV other than the names of some shows, but I am interested in screenwriting.

Well, technically the shows aren't 'scripted,' so there was no need to hire a screenwriter for the shows, and APs cost way less than a WGA writer and are just pulled up from the ranks of production co-ordinators. It's in the definition that allows them to pay one person to organize the shoot and 'write' the scripts for half the money it would cost to pay a WGA (Writers Guild of America) writer. For what they pay APs the Guild wouldn't let a screenwriter take the job.

she already has her license back. the length of time it was suspended was up before she even went into jail.

its an admisitrative thing, once the time is up, you get it back even if you violated probation.
