Technically doesn't he still have to be appointed by the reigning monarch? Being leader of the party holding the most seats doesn't automatically confer the role of PM/First Lord of the Treasury, no?

I heard that he won't actually become prime minister until Wednesday.

Formalities. The Queen has no true power, and has nothing to gain by not appointing him, except to lose all power entirely.

You know what I think is funny? Some of the tories were demanding a new general election when Blair steps down despite having "Vote Blair, Get Brown" as one of their election slogans during the last election..:p

Harman? I thought bookies had stopped taking bets on Johnson since it was more or less a certainty.

I guess what pisses me off the most was that Brown wasn't even 'elected' as leader of the Labour. As McDonnell didn't get enough nominations, this meant Brown stood unopposed, and so there was no vote.

My student union manages to be more democratic than the Labour party, and that really is saying something.

Hah, despite Labour politicians traditionally wearing red ties, both Blair and Brown were wearing ties that were a delightful pastel shade of blue at the special conference yesterday. The symbolism is... well... would have been poignant were it not so obvious already.

Hopefully Brown will will re-edit the changes made to the Labor platform by Blair.

I'm afraid more of the same will come mainly because any decision Blair has made already has been with the approval of Brown. I'm glad Harman got the Deputy and not a real job in the cabinet though.

I remember that election...I watched the entire thing in the company of a rather nice bottle of scotch. I enjoyed the results a great deal.
