What's a good PC mouse?

I would use a laser mouse, the ball one can have the ball stuck on you and it sucks.

My AUD200 Logitech MX Revolution bummed out on me, and I need a new mouse. I'd like anything that's precise and aesthetic, yet hardy (the Revolution died when I just banged it against my printer, cheap Chinese shit).
Any suggestions?

Yay for laser mouse! NO need for flat surfaces!
But them mice available are too small for my big hands... not ergonomic. Bt mine came with a mouse bag.

Now, by laser, do you mean optical (the red light) or actual laser?
Optical became colloquially known as laser, which became bloody confusing when they actually came out with actual laser mouses.

Optical mouse. Never seen what a laser mouse is. Can we zap them enemies with the laser mouse?

I bought a Logitech optical mouse about 4 years ago and it still works... it has been through all kinds of trials, my graphics work, drinks spilled on it, chewed on by dogs. It has outlasted 3 keyboards, a suround sound system, a moniter, 2 graphics cards, and my PS2.

unless you're a hard-core gamer or need the extra buttons and stuff that you can get on a mouse, any one'll do. even one of the cheap, basic microsoft ones are alright, i've been using them for ages and haven't had any issues

get one of those mice with the big ball on top, when something is loading you can juggle it about an break things :)
or go for cheap mice and when they break save the parts, that way soon you will be able to make your own (the mouse I'm using is part Tesco part Packard bell)

No its not. It only has seven working buttons. Two just change its precision, and the other opens its control panel.

I own a Logitech MX518 for my desktop (yes, it's an gaming mouse) and a Logitech G3 for my work PC (yes, it's a gaming mouse too). I think these are optical mice not laser mice.
Don't buy cheap crappy optical mice - they are pedantic on what surface they like work, low DPI (read SLOW) and the buttons are wobbly.

Depends what you're using it for. If you game alot, get a gaming mouse. If you mainly do desktop work, just get a decent (not too cheap, but it doesn't have to be ridiculously expensive) mouse.
I would, however, advise you to avoid cheap wireless optical mice like the plague... Baaaad. Very baaad.
As an aside, are there any other left-handed folks who are pissed off at the fact that there aren't any *proper* mice around for us?!?
In addition, anyone know of a good keyboard? as decent as this cheap one is, I really would like to step up and keep this as a spare.
Mice and keyboards are a rare point on which I'll recommend Microsoft. They actually have quite good hardware. It's just their software that could use a little work, though XP SP2 is pretty good.

Mine is similar. I really recommend a wireless mouse even for desktop work, I hate the cable one I have to use at work. The frickin' cable is too short, and even if it were not, a wireless mouse is always nice to have when you have two people sitting at the computer from time to time - you can just hand the mouse to whoever is handling the computer right now.
A drawback of a (bad) optical mouse is that they can jump; the cursor might just decide to jump to the other end of the screen.

that's often a symptom of using it on the wrong kind of surface. when we got our first optical mouse, mum insisted on using it on a shiny placemat, which lead to some rather unpleasant effects. when playing a first-person-shooter, i'd occaisionally start spinning in circles, aiming at the ground for a few seconds, which was rather unpleasant...

the worst i've had with a mouse was something going wrong in either the mouse or the cable that made it stop working every 5 minutes (windows would make the usb device removed sound) then start working after about 10 seconds (windows would make the usb device connected sound). as you can guess, it's now only a spare...

I've got a Logitech laser mouse and wireless keyboard set. The damn thing works through a wall, which is pretty scary, but pretty awesome too. It's been packed up, dropped, forgotten, and had things spilled on it, but nothing ever interfered with its functioning. It's the one with a scroll wheel, zoom in/out buttons, forward/back buttons, and a fairly ergonomic design. I have small hands as well, and this one's pretty comfy. I highly recommend it.

I've got a Logitech G5 (6 button model), and it's great. The only gripe I have with Logitech is, the Linux support isn't there (which is one of the reasons I only play around with Linux, and use XP 99% of the time).

Wow, that's only $40?
I have one of these, I bought it 6 years ago with the first PC I bought myself. Although, mine doesn't look that pretty anymore. After it's first cleaning, the silver paint came off with the encrusted sweat and now it's a dull grey. It still works well, although if the left button is held down for a bit, it takes about half a second to pop back up. That's probably due to the heavy clicking involved back when I played counter-strike and Diablo 2.

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. My dad has a wireless mouse and keyboard and they're pretty much useless further than a metre from the sensor.

I use the two thumb buttons to move back and forwards when browsing the internet, and as fast weapon-switching when playing FPS games (the scroll generally controls zoom, unless zoom is bound to the right mouse button). The ability to change the sensitivity is actually very useful, too. And for $40 or less, the MX518 is a great deal. Reliable, accurate, and ergonomic.
Although if you're going to be dropping your mouse on a regular basis, just get a $5 crappy ball mouse, since you're going to have to replace it soon anyways.
Oh, and whoever was whining about not finding any left-handed mice - I'm left-handed, and I prefer right-handed mice. You can type more words with just your left hand than just your right, so it makes both finding a mouse and typing easier.

That would be me. :)
Ah, so they're one of those things that you can use regardless.
Probably won't have any trouble then. I don't have any issues with right handed guitars, right-handed scissors etc., just wasn't sure about how awkward it was, and before now, hadn't wanted to plonk down the money on a more expensive mouse. That reassures me somewhat. In case you can't tell, I'm starting to grow weary of having a cheap keyboard and mouse. Part of that has to do with the fact that my computer looks fairly flashy and I want my keyboard and mouse to be flashy also, and part of it has to do with desiring an adequate spare supply (the current stuff would be fine as backups.
I'm probably going back to a wired keyboard though. As nice as wireless is...

my brother's laser mouse has a red laser in it, considering laser is actually focused light then there has to be some light. its too sensitive for me, the slightest nudge and its over the other side of the screen, even on low sensitivity =S

No VISIBLE light. All of the laser mice that I know of that are actually lasers use IR, not red.
Red ones tend to be optical mice using an LED, not a laser.

You got left click, right click, middle click, scroll wheel up, scroll wheel down, forward, back (you'll get addicted to those two quickly), mouse sensitivity up, mouse sensitivity down, Logitech control panel. Admittedly, the last three aren't that used in web browsing, but thefirst seven are must haves.

I heart my 7 year old MS Trackball that they no longer make. I only got the MX518 because I am going to get a laptop and a trackball will be more useful for the laptop as I do not need a surface.
