Music that NSG has exposed you to

I figure that we've done the flame war thing about music so often that it's time to do something positive and community building (or, perhaps, I've just been reading too many of the local pro-Obama organization's talking points lists and I'm stuck on the whole "look for common ground" point. :p). So, here's the topic of the thread: list songs and bands that you have come to like/love that you would never have found if it weren't for our regular music love/hate-fests here on NSG.

For Me:

Somebody posted Nerf Herder (http://youtube.com/watch?v=6_TZvgDWxS0) in a fairly recent thread.

Some time ago, during a music downloading argument, someone exposed me to Chumbawamba (http://youtube.com/watch?v=YbnGiXm02OY). Technically, I had heard of them before, but all I had heard was Tubthumper, which I hated. Whoever it was (Sinhue, maybe?) posted "Pass it along" and I went and listened to their other work.

Soheran introduced me to Evan Greer (http://youtube.com/watch?v=45Os1Bft2Ek) in one of our recent communism v. capitalism threads.

How about you lot?

There was a whole thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=517018) on that back in April.

Slayer, Mastodon (Sort of), Send More Paramedics, Machinae Supremacy, Infected Mushroom, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, DragonForce, Electric Wizard, Finntroll, Flogging Molly, Husker Du, Lacuna Coil, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Sex Pistols, Voodoo Glow Skulls, and Corporate Avenger.

Yeah...I'd say about 70% of stuff I listen to has been recommended on NSG.

I've been liking Nile, Deicide, and Cannibal Corpse lately.

Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution was mentioned by somebody here. in a classical music thread as i remember. i think it was Tribes or The Infinite Dunes. that person also introduced me to Soulseek (not a band) which is awesome.

Although i'd heard their stuff before i've got into 65daysofstatic because of their long term residence in IV Stalin's sig.

and German Nightmare introduced me to Seeed.

oh and i'd never really listened to Husker Du til some posters on here were discussing them.

i think that's all. well i've also started listening to more punk but there's so much out there i couldn't possibly name all that i've listened to. most of it was off an internet radio thingy that Similization posted a link to, but i've lost the bookmark somehow and i can't remember the url.

Eh, not much. It did introduce me to Pandora though, which introduced me to the Velvet Underground, which I technically knew about before, but I had only heard "Heroin" and some of Lou Reed's solo stuff.

Also, System of a Down.

Last.fm?

no, it was an exclusively punk site. didn't have any catchy sort of name as far as i remember. there was a small window with a huge scrollable list of tracks to choose from then it just streamed from there. white and red colour scheme i think.

:)

Jello Biafra and I V Stalin have done the same for me.

Stalin's on a roll here, his sig got me into 65daysofstatic too. Erm, Potarius introduced Husker Du, Fass' crazy pop stuff never ceases to amuse, and someone here mentioned Last.fm to me. Aside from anything in particular, its the diversity of musical tastes here that has had the most impact on me, certainly widened my range.

Kanbia's got me into a few bands - notably Kyuss (I wouldn't listen to them half as much if it weren't for him) and Propergol/Hermetique.

Potarius - Rush, though they really aren't as great as he says. :p

Nadkor - Biffy Clyro.

I'm sure there's more that I've forgotten.

Kanabia recommended Kyuss and Electric Wizard to me.
Bodies Without Organs (and others) recommended Joy Division.
I don't remember who recommended the 13th Floor Elevators or Slint.

It's good to know that I am no longer alone in the world. Being an American with a taste for obscure metal can be quite depressing. :p

Somebody posted Nerf Herder (http://youtube.com/watch?v=6_TZvgDWxS0) in a fairly recent thread.

They made the theme song to my favourite show... I didn't know they were a good band in their own right 'til just now, though.

I have to admit that I've never heard of any band that I didn't already know from NSG. I did show one or two people new music, though.
