EDINBURG, Texas (AP) -- Firefighters who spent half an hour fighting a blaze in which 2,000 pounds of marijuana went up in smoke breathed so much of it that they would have failed a drug test, a fire chief said.

It took more than 35 firefighters, 1,000 gallons of water and five gallons of chemical suppressant to extinguish the warehouse blaze on Wednesday, Fire Chief Shawn Snider said.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were investigating the origin of the drugs.

The Hidalgo County fire marshal was investigating whether arson was the cause.

Snider said Thursday the firefighters were exposed to so much marijuana smoke that they would not be able to pass a drug test, despite wearing air packs to prevent them from inhaling toxic or hazardous fumes.

It's possible that for some reason marijuana doesn't have that effect on you. Does it have all the others? Munchies, potential paranoia, shimmery vision, enhanced creativity, less interest in personal hygiene?

It's also possible you just have never smoked marijuana.

Munchies, absolutely, but not only an increased need/want to eat, but an exquisite appreciation for the subtleties of the flavour when you do eat it. Paranoia definitely, mostly worry that the entire world can see right through me and knows I'm stoned. Nothing more extreme than that, luckily. Shimmery vision? It's really hard to say. The visual aspect is somewhat like alcohol, I suppose, but without the physical impairment. Enhanced creativity, absolutely, and you left out the single most important one: Music! The ability to pick out individual strands of the song and turn them over in your mind, appreciating them singly and then backing off and absorbing the whole song at once, closing your eyes and feeling like the band playing the song is literally in the room with you, intense shivers down the spine on certain notes, and extreme emotion tied to certain songs and certain types of songs that is absent when not intoxicated. Oh, yeah. I've smoked it.
