Would NSGers Put Their Money Where Their Mouths Are?

There are a lot of predictions that are made here, declerations of certainty about the time to come. We tend to state them as matters of fact, with certainty.

Of course in debate confidence is natural, but StumbleUpon (which means that many of you probably already know about this) has sent me a site where you can, in fact, put your money where your mouth is (http://www.longbets.org/predictions).

It costs $50 to make a prediction and the minimum bet against a prediction is $200. The winnings go to a charity of the winners choice.

This is an interesting proposition, mostly because I've used the phrase, "I'd be willing to bet..." Well, now I can.

I'll be the first to admit, I don't actually have the balls. Though it might have more to do with living hand to mouth and not having the money for something like that, but still...

That's a stiff wager for such a forum as this.

... Well, for me, at the least.

We could, of course, lure more TRAs and F&Gs here to try to back up their claims! :D

That's be pretty intriguing...every time they 'predict' we link this and ask them to 'pony up.'

By the way, I've been scanning the predictions, and this is so far my favorite:
"By the year 2150, over 50% of schools in the USA or Western Europe will require classes in defending against robot attacks." (http://www.longbets.org/86)

"I don't even know why the scientists build the robots"-Sam Watterson sketch on SNL...

Well, for starters, I sure as hell wouldn't put my money on Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, or Jordan getting involved in some kind of civil war in Iraq, but I argue that because it's a possibility...

meaning, I would bet on that more than I would Nader for the presidency. :)

a spare fifty bux laying arround i don't happen to have, otherwise this would be a somewhat interesting proposition, as there are a number of VERY safe bets. the only thing is, it's also a pretty safe bet all or most of them have already been taken.

for example, that it is a completely safe bet that if we keep consuming it at even present rates, the oil WILL eventually run out. WHEN may be a good deal more speculative, but THAT it will, is a completely safe one.

same goes of course, for anything else that is being consumed at as much or greater of a rate then nature or anything else, can or is, replacing it.

You could bet against this guy (http://www.longbets.org/246) who is betting that peak oil won't be reached by 2010.

Here's a very NSG (http://www.longbets.org/181) style prediction about climate change.

This one (http://www.longbets.org/8) is actually a bet, that US Mens Soccer Team will win the World Cup before the Red Sox win the World Series. And it's a $2000 bet!

And here (http://www.longbets.org/120) is a bet pertinent to another thread on the front page, that a bipedal great ape will be discovered that will validate bigfoot/yeti.

Seriously, this might be the coolest thing I've seen in a while...

A cool tool, IMO. If I had money to spare, I might toss money up for something. However, I have no money, let alone money to spare, and I expect most NSers are in some degree of my situation.

I'm too poor to bet.

I'm willing to bet that none of my money would go to those poor charities, so maybe I should just give the money straight to the charities in the first place?

Hmm, if I'm willing to bet on that, maybe I should use that site...

But, I'm willing to bet that none of my money would go to those poor charities, so... wait... oh no! I'm caught in an infinite vicious circle! AAGGH! I bet I never get out of this!

Hmm, if I'm will...

Brellach has been disconnected. Reason: Paradoxical explosion.

Wish I had known about this in late 2002, since by now basically all of my predictions about Iraq have come true. Pisses me off since I was about 17 when I made them, and you would think that there were smarter people in charge of the US than some random 17 year old with an interest in history.

Psh, if the money's going to charity, I'd rather just keep saying "I'll bet that..."

Why gamble if I don't get the $$$?

Most of the bets that I would make are already taken, and for a lot more money.

I'd bet on Iranian military involvement in Iraq. They already supply the country with terrorists.
