Wisdom Teeth

I am one of those lucky people who still has their wisdom teeth. This is only because I never had the roots for the two on the top, just the two on the bottom. They grew in straight for me, so there was no reason to get them pulled.

Who here still has theirs? Who had theirs pulled?

Who wants to share their horror stories? :)

I'm boring, as I'm keeping mine. They came in perfectly, and I see no reason to remove them.

...Well, the fact that I had four OTHER teeth pulled for my braces may have something to do with it, but still. >_>

Mine are still growing in! In fact, I only really have the very tip of my first one, and no others. But the dentist checked out some X-rays, and it looks like they're going to come in very nicely, and perhaps won't need to be pulled. I think that's because I have all this extra space in my mouth because I got a few of my adult teeth pulled (in fact, two of them got pulled when their babies were still going strong, meaning they had to like dig down into the gum and stuff) when I was younger, under the false belief that I would therefore not have to have braces. Well, I had three years of braces, and maybe I'm finally getting my reward.

Mine were coming in at brutal angles and would have eventually made severe inroads on this huge nerve that runs across my face.

They had to do some serious excavation to get them out, so I was put out for the duration. One minute I'm in the chair with a needle in my arm and the next I am on the couch laughing like crazy with cotton balls in my mouth. I apparently had the wherewithall to get someone to take away my phone.

I got removed about 2 years ago. It actually wasn't so bad. The great part was that when I woke up, I was so groggy, that I kept walking straight into the door. My friend though, I think his suture ripped and he had to go home because he was bleeding.

I've still got gaps in the back of my jawbone from where mine had to come out. They never did fill in quite right.

The operation went much the same way as the above: I've got a needle in my arm and the next thing I know I'm lying on a couch with a mouth full of cotton. Though apparently I didn't react as well to the drug and was on a permanent down for the rest of the day.

Yeah, I had to get knocked out as well. I woke up during it and I guess I sat up or tried to jump up or something cause all I remember were white coats and a hand pushing my head back.

Since it's possible i'm getting mine removed soon, unless NSG has diagnosed me totally wrong that is, I have a few questions:

1) does the procedure hurt?

2) is there a lot of pain after the procedure?

3) is it really true that you have to have massive bandages around your jaw when it's removed?

I woke up sitting in a chair facing a Backstreet Boys poster. And they were dancing for me. Gave me a few giggles.

There was a girl there that also was put out and didn't take too well to the affects. She was stumbling around bawling her eyes out. The workers there had to help her mom get her to the car in a wheelchair.

3) is it really true that you have to have massive bandages around your jaw when it's removed? That really depends. How far are your wisdom teeth grown out of the jaw? Wisdom teeth tend to be not as firmly fixed into the jaw as other teeth. However, if they are not fully grown out of the jaw bone and the gum, the removal could require some effort. When I had one wisdom tooth removed it did not hurt at all, I had no pain afterwards (only a nerve-wrecking itch), and I needed no bandages at all.

1. Depends, I was out completely. But depending on what they have to do to get them out, they may only apply a local.

2. Not especially. I don't recall being in any pain at all, really. My lips were swollen, but that was about it.

3. No.

*edit* I'll note here that my procedure involved all four being cut out due to various degrees of impaction, 2 of which involved removing small chips of my jawbone to remove the offending teeth.

Unfortunately, they werent the slightest bit loose. The crowns had broken off and just breathing hurt the exposed pulp.

I gargled and drank a decent amount of Crown Royal, whcih I preffered at the time.

It hurt more-throbbed,when I lay down to sleep and on night #2 of no sleep, I heated needle nosed vise-grip pliers with a torch in the vise and bent then to a 90 degree angle. Put a piece of napkin over the tooth for traction-the first one came out more easily than I expected.
The second one didnt and was a bloody mess.

This was at 3am with my wife and infant son sleeping in the master bedroom while I worked in the master bathroom a few feet away.
Apparently,I didnt make a sound.

I had mine pulled about a year and a half ago.

The worst part was them shoving that stupid needle into my arm.

Then apparently I, "Didn't like it." So I woke back up and said to myself, "Man, I had this wierd dream that I was at the dentist getting my wisdom teeth pulled. Oh... Damnit..."

Then they shoved the needle in my OTHER arm, and I woke up a few hours later with like 4 pounds of gauze in my mouth and my lower lip and chin were numb. As in, I couldn't feel them whatsoever, and I kept poking them and it was one of the wierdest feelings I've ever had.

So then I went home, and had to take a fist full of pills, while my chin and lower lip were numb. That made it difficult.

Then I was fine after three hours.

My one friend was less fortunate than me, he had to get seven wisdom teeth removed.

that being said, I lost my upper bicuspid baby tooth and a permanent grew in and that got knocked out in a fight and another one came in, and that one got a really bad cavity so I had it pulled, and another one is coming in.......and it hurts like hell. My dentist assures me this is the last one.

Got mine out, they didn't need to come out but my dentist decided he wanted to get paid more and he managed to make my teeth sound worse then they were and my parents fell for it.The first 24 hours where horrible just with the blood everywhere and the gauze didn't stop the bleeding. There was a huge puddle of blood on my pillow. and I was gagging on it and just miserable. It hurt after that but not so badly that I really had to restrict my diet, just eat slowly.

When my friend got hers out that hit a nerve in her face and it was swollen for two months and she still can't feel her lips, it might be permanent. Although she is starting to be able to taste again so then again, maybe not.

Ugh. Having my wisdom teeth removed was not fun. I hear stories of people who are put under during the whole experience, but not me, no. I had all four removed at the same time. It was somewhat awkward at first, when I could feel the crunching on one side, and the sucking device sucking away the bits afterwards.

What really sucked, was that they didn't freeze the other side of my mouth properly, so that when they started digging away over there, it hurt like a sonofabitch. So, they added more anasthetic. I was miserable.

Thanks for reminding me.

I had four teeth pulled as a kid specifically to make room for my wisdom teeth, which based on this thread seems to be more common then I thought. I still have them, despite the efforts of a rather forceps-happy dentist a few years ago who wanted to remove them for no good reason I could discern.

Ha ha ha. No, but I need a special toothbrush to clean my molars.

They had to pull my wisdom teeth...as it was, I had an additional four molars on top of the wisdom teeth yanked in order to make room for the rest of my teeth. They yanked two molars first...and then new ones grew in. That was bizarre.

When I was 14, my jaw was hollow, so they had to do surgery to fix it. The orthodontist decided that, while he was in there, he might as well take out the wisdom teeth that were starting to come up. As for the top ones, I never felt them come in, but I sure hope they have, because there's no room left!

Yeah I sorta wish they had removed my 2nd premolars, or even 1st molar set to make room for my wisdom teeth or something. I'd like to have had them. But after reading up on it a bit, I can't complain. I didn't get any nerve damage or infections from the removal like quite a bit of people do.

Also, when mine were coming in.. although there sure wasn't any room back there for them (if they would've came in with no teeth being removed, they just would've pushed my teeth together and probably caused my fronts to get pushed in and over lap or something).. they were coming in upright .. not angled or anything, because the crowns were cutting through. I also never had any pain from them. I'm betting the orthodontist my mom took me to just decided to cut them out since he'd get more money for doing that than just pulling a set of premolars. I certainly didn't know shit about them back then, and I know my mom didn't either .. going by when she listened to some corpse dentist who told her he needed to pull my 4 front bottom baby teeth, when they weren't ready to come out and because of the dumb ass forcing them out.. all 4 of them came in crooked. Only crooked teeth in my damn mouth. I always handled my baby teeth.. when one started getting loose I'd wiggle it with my tongue or finger for a good while until it was just hooked by the skin and then I'd pull it out. Fared well doing that. Damn dentists!

With the pressure from the wisdom teeth gone, they will have no reason to fight for space, as the back ones start moving back from the room they've got the rest will back off. They hopefully will work themselves out without guidance.

I had all four wisdom teeth removed a few years ago.

What really stuck with me was that it was my first experience with serious anesthesia. They used gas to make me relax, and then administered an IV general to knock me out. Gas, stiches, bloody hell.

I had a local anesthetic injection, was asked to wait out side for 10 mins. Then I went back into the surgery and litarly three seconds later it was all done. A little bit of blood, a mouth full of cotton for a little while, then off back home.

Yeah, I was amazed at what a process it was to have mine removed. A friend of mine had his out in a manner very similar to your experience.

With mine, I think the problem was that the teeth were all twisted around in weird positions. The doctor scared the crap out of me because he said there was a reasonable chance of nerve damage during removal of the lower ones, and I might lose sensation in my tongue (!!). Happily, none of that happened.

Wisdom teeth are your third molars. They usually appear between the ages of 17 and 24, though some people get them later, and some people never get them at all.

Wisdom teeth are most often removed because they've become impacted. There are different types of impacted wisdom teeth. Some are angled in ways that can be harmful. Some fail to erupt through the gum completely. And sometimes, as with my teeth, the tooth will be angled so far forward that it actually grows into the root of the second molars.

Basically, they remove your wisdom teeth if it looks like they're causing a problem, or they're going to cause a problem in the future. It's far better to have your wisdom teeth removed than to experience some of the serious problems that can arise, like infections, damage to your other teeth, lacerations and damage to the tongue, or even nerve damage.

My wisdom teeth started pushing all my other teeth forward when I was 19.
Dentist said I had to have them out. Problem was they were very healthy and under a mound of gum.
He gave me some gas that knocked me out - except I came to while he was trying to wrench one of the bottom tooths out and it broke off. I vividly remember him cursing as he pulled a bloody shard out with gum still attached to it. Mercifully I slid under again.
When I woke up again, they were all out and I was stitched up. I had to walk home as my parents were both working.
When I got home, I was still under the influence of the gas. I suddenly 'had' to go back downtown and buy the latest issue of 2000AD. I got down fine but when I started home the remnants of the gas hit me hard. I totally forgot where I was or what I was doing. A couple stitches broke as well and blood started to pour out of my mouth.
So there I was in the mainstreet, unable to think straight, unable to talk properly, staggering and swaying with blood pissing from my mouth.
What a sight I must have made!
Fortunately an old schoolmate was driving past and gave me a lift home.

Worse was to come: My face bloated up and went yellowish-brown from the bruising. A few days later I had to enroll back into Uni and get my photo taken for my student ID. I looked like I had goiter and jaundice combined and had to spend the rest of the year blowing my cheeks out whenever anyone asked me for my ID so I'd look like my photo.

Maybe I don't have any.

I have never had wisdom teeth, and the dentist says that if I haven't had them by now I won't ever get them...so I guess I'm lucky!

That's hardcore. Mine were crumbling in my mouth, so I had them taken out. My recovery was surprisingly easy though--didn't take any pain meds other than ibuprofen after the first pain pill and was eating normally again inside 48 hours.

Yeah-I was a lot tougher back then.

Though I recently removed one of my big toe-nails after ripping it up in a logging accident.
For a few days, I thought I might get to keep it,but it clearly wasnt re-adhering,so I had to take it out.

I'm lucky to have a great immune system, never had an infection that I know of,though I still treat everything with alcohol and antibiotic cream.

I guess that I can't vote in the poll because I can't 'still' have them - because I have yet to get them. I'm 19, so I guess that it's early days yet. To be honest, though, I don't think I need more teeth.

I had to have one top one removed and the other will be removed due them scratching my cheeks

That's about right, the only problem with wisdom teeth is that they can actually come through at any time, but that's the textbook answer.
