Black Tie type events

Okay, so hubby graduated (again) and his college is hosting this black tie dinner/dance thingy, and so I am making hubby take me because my prom experience sucked and he didn't even go to his prom......and I think it would be fun to go.

However, my prom dress doesn't fit anymore, and also, it's old. I made it myself, and apparently it was only meant to hold up for the night of prom because it's....literally falling apart at the seams. My wedding dress was actually a prom dress that I modified and it does still fit, but I don't like the color (ivory) so I thought I would dye it, but apparently that's some sort of crime according to both my mother and my daughter (who seems to think she will wear it at her wedding)

so I have to buy a dress. My first inclination is to go to the thrift store and buy one and modify it again......but, I want to look nice and I can't really fight the urge to buy a new dress.

So, what do you guys think?

also, I am supposed to find him a tux.......anyone know how to do that?

sorry. :(

Also, does anyone have any great prom/black tie event stories?

What about if you go in a tux, and hubby goes in a dress?

I am already asking a lot to make him go dancing in front of his peers. :p I don't think that suggestion would go over well.

I wouldn't buy a brand new expensive dress because you'll probably regret it afterwords.

I like the idea of buying an inexpensive one and making it look nice.

Oh, and make sure you dance like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoUEMZnibS8).

Black Tie?

Shouldn't that be African-American Tie events? :p

Oh and for your dress - make yourself feel super spiffing and get yourself a new dress.

As for your husband, I recommend going to a suit-hire place, they'll have some tuxes there, probably a good selection of them (unless you want to buy one for several events, in which case, I have no idea, sorry).

If you live in the US , a great place for fancy dresses is David's Bridal
http://www.davidsbridal.com/specialoccasions.jsp
They have a lot of retail locations and are reasonably priced.
I think every woman should have at least one fabulous little black dress in her wardrobe - so here is a perfect excuse to get yourself one !

You should be able to rent a tuxedo at just about any Bridal or Tuxedo shop. Most large Malls ( In the US ) have one.

Good Luck - and Grats to your Husband !

I personally don't wear tuxedos. I mean, everyone wears tuxedos.

I wear Nouveau jackets. Burgundy and Cream for my prom - looked a treat, and everyone else loved it.

Get him one in black, white waistcoat, and go with a black bow tie. Should go down well.

And get yourself a new dress. Splash out.

EDIT: Burgundy and Cream was the theme. Not the colour of the jacket. Burgundy tie, Cream waistcoat with Burgundy spots.

don't they sell suits (I'm not an expert but i guess that's the same?) in ordinary shops? When it's only for 1 party it would be stupid to spend a lot of money on a tailor. And if it's going to be somewhat dark nobody is going to notice that you aren't wearing anything expensive. You could also buy something cheap and then buy a more expensive necklace or handbag or earrings which you can wear afterwards (accessories is where it's at).

The only thing remotely resembling an American prom (if it's really like in the movies) I've been to was our own school prom/party. It was just like any other party but everybody was dressed up and there were teachers. So I don't have any good stories. I did pass out on one of those once though, at 1 PM, I can still feel the shame *blushes*

I would offer advice if I had any, but I'm very informal. Instead of "black tie optional" I'd be at home in a "shirt optional" place

...or would if the people who took up the optional part wouldn't all be overweight males...

I didn't go to my prom either, although I never regretted it for a second. I hate "dressing up." I'll wear a suit twice in my life: when I get married, and when I'm dead and in the coffin.

There's no point in splurging and buying a brand new dress when the odds of you using it again are slim.

Yeah, I skiped my highschool graduation, didn't feel like buying a gown and sitting through a loong list of names. Eating out once, my mother told some old lady I wasn't attending my graduation. She keep telling me i'd regret it after I said I wouldn't. Still don't, you blue haired harpy!

I can't be much help on places in the US...

I do say, wear whatever makes you feel best :) whether thats something cheap which you modify, or a new dress - if you're feeling comfortable and confident, that's what'll show through the most, and you'll enjoy yourself more :)

No real stories, but my prom was pretty awesome - on a boat down the Thames :)

Buy a new dress! Things like this don't happen very often and you deserve to treat yourself once in a while. There are a lot of mid-level department stores that sell formal and semi-formal dresses for reasonable prices. And if it doesn't fit you exactly, they will do alterations, sometimes at a nominal cost, sometimes free. When you've found something that suits you, go to the menswear department of that store and ask about tuxedos - if they don't have them, they will know where to refer you. He can either rent one or buy one, but he'll have to go in to have it fitted, you can't do that for him.

The only prom story I have is pretty sad. I had a date, obviously (this was in the 60's - girls didn't go to proms without dates), I spent a ton on a formal dress, shoes, purse, stole, hairdo, etc. He called at the last minute (like three hours before the prom) to cancel - his boss wouldn't let him get off work that night - it sounded more than a little lame to me, so I was furious - my thinking was (and still is) that if he had really intended to go, he would have arranged things with his boss in advance. Ok, sad little prom story - fortunately, it didn't set the tone for the rest of my life.

Wouldn't have happened if it was me :p . I love getting dressed up for that sort of stuff. And the Proms start soon! Another opportunity!

I have to disagree here. Most of what you can get at David's Bridal is shoddily made. You might be able to find a gem there, but it will probably cost more than it is worth.

You can find some really nice things at department stores or, if you're lucky, at consignment shops with decent prices. The more "specialty" the shop is (especially if that specialty is bridal), the more expensive the dresses will be.

As for tuxes, I'd go to Savvi Formalwear. That's where we rented all the tuxes for our wedding. After Hours may be ok as well, but we didn't like their tuxes as much.

I went to prom both my junior and senior years of high school with a gay friend of mine. He wasn't out of the closet yet, but we all pretty much knew. He was a good dancer though! =)

One of my best friends still reminds me when we get to reminiscing about how, when they were playing the Celine Dion song from Titanic, my date suddenly yelled out, "Ooooh! Iceberg! Iceberg!" Apparently, it helped my friend get close to his date, which led to quite a make-out session later that night.

Yes it is, and you can't even go to a cheap party here without hearing that 'music'. Most of the people listening to it are quite chav-like too. But it's getting extremely popular so i guess it will be over soon.

To stop this being too hijacky.

Smunk AFAIK, in lots of areas "Black Tie" can also just mean a black suit rather then a dinner jacket. Which could be useful in a pinch, though inadvisable if you think everyone else there will be properly black tie.

Fortunately I have only been to a black tie event once (and just wore a suit). Unfortunately I was feeling very depressed at the time and just got very pissed and vomited. Fortunately not on anyone/thing so I didn't make a tit of myself.

Of course, to take the piss you can always go White Tie ;)

Well, considering my May Ball was on Friday, I suppose I know something of black tie events, although Cambridge ones are rather known for extravagance (and good thing too considering a normal price per ticket is £100).

I guess whether you should buy or hire depends on whether you think you will be going to more events like this in the nearish future. I couldn't advise on suitable shops given the location.

Stories from friday, hmm, well I got married! College marriage that is. We had a lovely little ceremony during the ball. Numerous drunken incidents and bad dancing as well. At my old school leavers ball, my date hooked up with another guy (we weren't going out, just friends) and, literally, ate each other for around 20 minutes right infront of the dj, and then were rather embarassed to discover everyone starring at them after the dj announced their activities to the floor :p

There are stores where you can rent tuxes. My friends use those when the go to dances. Are you sure that it's a tux you want and not a suit that you want (I'm never sure with these types of events)?

I've never been to a formal dance. They're expensive, silly events, the music is always awful, and I'd be bored out of my mind. No point in spending money on it. There are better ways to spend an evening with a loved one or with friends. The only reason I even have a tux is that sometimes I do gigs I need a tux for.

It's pretty easy to find dresses at this time of year that are in the $50 range. It's post-prom so a lot of stores will be clearing out their dresses.

You don't want to wear a prom dress to a wedding anyways. Proms are more formal occasions while most weddings are more semi-formal, a fairly plain, simple (comfortable) dress would work nicely, perhaps with a nice necklace, shoes (try finding some of those ballet flat thingies if you don't like heels) and a purse, you'll be stylish without being horribly uncomfortable.

I sorta got stood up at the second prom I went to...

So I went to two proms in highschool, when I was in school there was still OAC (like grade 13) and often people went for both their grade 12 and OAC years. For the second one, I was supposed to go with my then-boyfriend. He ended up not making it because his foster father wouldn't let him leave the house. The kid still owes my mom $40 for the spot in the limo that he didn't use. However, I still had a fun time, I was still with a lot of my friends and we danced and ate and it was good.

It's impossible for me to be comfortable in a dress. I have to always be paranoid when I wear a dress because I feel like they all expose way too much. It feels weird to have that much air touching my legs, and if my shoulders are exposed too I feel awful and know something horrible is going to happen because of it. I can't possibly be myself in a dress. I don't want to go out and buy a purse and a necklace just for this either. I don't want to be stylish, I want to be myself and not feel demeaned and vulnerable.:(

I thought it was supposed to be a picture of yourself there, not a picture of some random person with your name there. I won't be myself if I'm in make up or a dress or anything like that. I won't recognize myself. I'm sorry, this is making me really irrational and I can't handle this.

for proms, there are pretty much 2 types of dresses: drapery (http://www.bestpromdresses.com/shop/prodimages/Jovani-10627-prom.jpg.jpg) and parade float (http://www.formaldress.cn/dresses/prom1.jpg)

Personally, I don't think a poofy one is really appropriate for a black-tie event. You can easily find a very nice one on sale at Macys, JCPenny, Filenes Basement, that kinda place...something along these (http://slimages.macys.com/is-viewers/dynapi/src/lib/tsapi/images/cover.gif?328x400)lines. I would say nothing knee-length (little bit too informal for a doctoral black-tie thing

As for hubby, Mens Warehouse is great...good prices, and really nice stuff.

For a tuxedo I would recommend going to a tailor and having one custom-made. They will be able to fit it perfectly and find the style that fits the best without any of the guesswork that might accompany doing it yourself. However, of course, that could be expensive, even extremely so. Really, the other two main options would be to rent a tuxedo or buy one from a store.

Personally, I would prefer buying the store tuxedo and not renting simply because you can take it to a tailor and have them hem it and fit it to him, achieving some of the similar benefits of a custom-made tuxedo with much lower cost. Not to mention you would have it on hand for other events.

I've only been to one black tie event. Unfortunately I didn't wear a nice dress.

Rent a tux at a wedding clothing store. It shouldn't be too awful, comparatively.

thanks Kat!

I do that too! (mostly because I can hardly be lady like rolling on the ground with children)

for proms, there are pretty much 2 types of dresses: drapery (http://www.bestpromdresses.com/shop/prodimages/Jovani-10627-prom.jpg.jpg) and parade float (http://www.formaldress.cn/dresses/prom1.jpg)

As for hubby, Mens Warehouse is great...good prices, and really nice stuff.
the last linky didn't work. :(

I am sure you would have been beautiful.

I am really giddy and nervous......I finally get to go to prom with my sweetheart (okay not really prom, but there will be dancing!)

maybe this one (http://www.makeovermagic.net/boutiquepics/full/blackWithsilvertop_oriental.jpg) will... ankle length, somewhat sleek (not poofy), and fairly formal. I know my mom has gotten some at the old Filenes (now Macys) for around $50 or so. sometimes less.

Just pick up a can of black spraypaint and use masking tape to block off some spaghetti straps. Keep 'em guessing.

Wear a dressy top with flowing palazzo-type pants in black, with black hose and heels.

My mom is going to make me wear a dress.:(

I wore some sort of thing like that when I had to wear a dress before, but it still made me feel bad.

Also, does anyone have any great prom/black tie event stories?

No. Luckily, there's no such thing in Germany. And I usually run a mile when I even suspect that somebody could possibly suggest I attend any such occasion.

I just don't like dressed-up pretentiousness, but that's just me, I guess.

Go for a kilt instead of a tux. Nothing sexier than that and you have the added benefit of being able to twirl to dramatic effect :p

Plus a guy can carry a purse in a manly way and make thrusting movements to bounce it. Ahhhh the joy of the sporran

So, what do you guys think?

also, I am supposed to find him a tux.......anyone know how to do that?

sorry. :(

Also, does anyone have any great prom/black tie event stories?

i have to wear a white bow tie for my graduation for some reason :/

if i get invites to black tie/super-smart events i tend to interpret that as loosely as possible. no tux for me, i usually take on some variation of tie, dress shirt, kilt, jacket, boots. suits are so boring, i refuse to where them unless i absolutely have to.

That's an idea! Find out what the Smunkee clan tartan is and get Hubby into a kilt! Then you can get a white formal dress with a sash in the same tartan (I think the sash is called an arasaid [I know, spelling]. You wouldn't have to carry a purse, because he can carry everything in his sporran. And don't forget the black shoes with knee length white socks that have tartan tops with the dagger stuck in the top of the sock. Or just look at the link.
