Well, now that Pandora is unavailable if you are not in the 'Land of the free', and my songs are starting to get repetitive, does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives? I don't think using a proxy to access a flash-based music streaming service is likely to work very well, so that's probably out. But I have no doubt people have input, here. So, fire away.

And it works fine for me. All you do is type in a five-digit code as your Zip and it works fine.

Pandora has been dead to me ever since they had a picture of Fall-Out-Boy on their page that wouldn't go away.

Yuck.

Damn, a friend showed me this website, but I forgot what it was. It had a name that didn't make sense for a music website though.

Have you tried recently? it IP filters now. Perhaps you just haven't been hit by it yet. Although I don't think that's likely.

Well Pandora seems more like a disaster hotline than an online radio site.

You have to pay to use that site? and it's torrents? in other words, you don't know you like the song until after you pick it out of millions of others and download it? That doesn't suit me at all.

We wouldn't want to be promoting illegal behaviour on NS:G, now would we?

There's plenty of information to be found on OiNK by using Google (other search engines are available).

Nope, it's entirely free. And, yes, torrents. You can find pretty much any music you like there, and there's usually good speeds.

You could try last.fm (http://www.last.fm/), a British site that does the same thing as Pandora. It also has more social functions, but I just used it for the music.

No-one.

But the promotion of a certain pink torrent tracker might count as promotion of piracy, which might get folks in trouble if a Mod had woken up on the wrong side of their bed this morning.

9 days?

Pffft.

Try 9 weeks. :p

If you like Pink Floyd, you might also like:

* Led Zeppelin
* The Doors
* The Beatles
* Jimi Hendrix
* Queen
* The Rolling Stones

Hmm... not looking too promising. I find those bands to be fairly different from Pink Floyd in terms of style, not too mention what Floyd fan would not have heard of them? That's like "If you like water, you may also like oxygen..."
I'll give it a try anyway, I guess...

It took a few days for it to pick up on my own tastes, so a little time may be all you need.

Yeah, last.fm is a bit... blunt with its suggestions.

They have a linux binary, though - that's always a good sign.

You don't have to use their software, you know. Many players have support for last.fm, like Amarok, Rhythmbox and MPD.

I used to use www.launch.com, you can rank artists and all that jazz... though I can't remember if it allows you to make new stations.

Also, it plays commercials so it kinda sucks.

How does this work? I put in Portishead and it said that it didn't have enough content to start the station...

oh, holy shit... I downloaded the thingy and it went through and sorted my music into categories so I can pick and choose what I want to listen to that is in a similar vein... this seems pretty sweet so far.

Done. 2329 hours :D

There probably is some redundancy though... so let's make it 1680 hours of original music :)

But they are, in effect, working as proxies, are they not? Which runs into the problems I stated in the OP about media streaming via proxy.

Hmmm... What the hell? I can't quote? Anyway, yeah I've heard of JAP but never used it. I tried to work with it's sister program (I forget the name at the moment), but I never got it working.

EDIT: Ah, that would be why I can't quote.

I don't know, but it should have support for streams and song reporting, so look through the preferences. I'm guessing it's just a checkbox somewhere, and two fields for your name and password, that you need to check/fill in.

Most clients, like MPD that I use, only support reporting the songs you listen to, but that's enough for my needs.
