'Swamp soccer' teams play dirty
More than 1,500 football fans swamped a Scottish town to enjoy the beautiful game in the mud.
An international field of players descended upon Dunoon, Argyll, to take part in Scotland's second-ever Swamp Soccer tournament.
The craze has already swept Sweden, Iceland, Holland, Russia and Brazil.
Forty-eight teams of mud-loving men and women - double the number of last year - are taking part in the six-a-side competition this weekend.
Swamp Soccer UK is open to anyone over the age of 17. Players compete on a wet bog and games are played in two 13-minute halves.
The muddy game, which originated in Finland in 1998, has now grown to be a world championship event.
Stewart Miller, founder of the Scottish event, said the recent spate of wet weather had actually helped make the day more enjoyable.
"It's one of the few outdoor sporting events where bad weather actually makes the conditions better," he said.
He said that around 500 players and substitutes had turned up from as far afield as Australia and New Zealand to participate in the two-day event.
A further 1,000 people turned up during the day to watch the fun, he estimated.
The finals will be held on Sunday.

I don't think it is. If you look at the guy's ankles, there's what's probably sock material that isn't covered by mud. LG wouldn't stand for such an elementary mistake.
Of course, it could just be that the game's only just started.

You do raise a good point: The bloke in the photo's wearing clothes. LG would have been naked.
Thus it can't be him.
I stand corrected and apologise to all for my mistake - especially LG for casting such a nasty slur upon his good person (playing in mud fully clothed! How could I be so libelous!) .

Scotland is a bit of a haul, but I do participate in New Hampshire's Mudbowl Championships every year. My team came in second two years ago. :)

Allow me to say that I often play in mud clothed. In fact, rare is the occasion that I play in mud naked. There are two reasons for this:
1) Other people. While I am certainly comfortable enough in my masculinity, heterosexuality and fidelity to my lovely wife to play in mud with other naked men, there are occasionally spectators, children and/or less familiar acquaintances who may be uncomfortable with such a state.
2) Sticks, rocks and other debris. *bleah*

It should definitely be encouraged. This trend of making fields with adequate drainage really needs to be reversed. Mud is part of field sports. *nod*

Have you seen how these new modern stain-resistant fabrics shrug off mud with a good washing? It's rather depressing. :(
Still, white uniforms should probably be avoided.

One of the most important parts. You could really pick out the best players on the team when they play on a muddy pitch. They're up to their eyes in muck, because they play hard and other such phrases. The guys who come home clean sat on the bench playing with themselves.
