It's a great console. Probably best of the current gen so far.

Over the next 5 years, it unpredictable who'll come out on top.

Oh dear...this is a fanboy warzone waiting to happen...

...Anyway. I own a 360. I find that it has an excellent selection of games that I like, and has good online support. On the hardware end it's not to bad either, delivering some superb graphics.

One problem I have with it however is its fragility. Overheating issues, hardware malfuctions, and especially disc-scratching. If the console is moved with a game inside, even when it isn't running, you could scratch the disc.

However, these issues are easily overcome if one just shows some care for the console. Don't punt it around, and it'll be fine. I've yet to experience the major problems that so many bitch about on gaming forums, and I think its because I don't abuse my console like some might.

In spite of the potential hardware and software problems, the wide selection of games, the graphics, and simple, reliable online performance makes the Xbox 360 a superior console in my book.

Overall: 8/10

It sucks balls. My copy of oblivion has stopped working now. Most other games run okay, but oblivion freezes constantly now, to the point where it's unplayable. Possibly I just need to upgrade the console firmware, but whenever I connect it to the net (after hauling box, huge power adaptor and tv upstairs), I get errors about the damn 'MTU size' being too small. I try to access my router to change the MTU by going to the default ip of the brand, and I just get 'page not available'. Can anyone help me out?
On a positive note, the visualisations are pretty cool. Balanced on the downslope, of course, by the fact you can only play purchased cds and can't connect mp3 players to transfer, so essentially it's too much work to be assed to transfer music to the bloody thing anyways.

6 - My 360 is okay...none of the games except Gears of War, Halo 3 and Fable 2 really appeal to me though...and I'm pretty cheesed off that I just experienced "the red ring of Death" and had to send my 360 to Texas....The PS3 looks better...but the price...sigh...

Don't own one but I've played one a bit.
Excellent graphics, way, way better than my Wii. Don't care for the gamepads though. Once blu-ray burners are cheaper I'll get a PS3 though.

um... Your copy of Oblivion is prolly not freezing because of your console. It's simply a very glitchy game, I have the PC version and it crashes way too often.

The Xbox 360 looks like a decent console, but I'm not going to buy one. If I buy any of the new consoles, I'll be getting a Wii.

I appreciate Nintendo's revolutionary approach to gameplay that has been brought about by the Wii. Graphics aren't as good on the Wii as the PS3 or Xbox, but I couldn't care less about that. It's all about the gameplay for me. Not to mention the Wii's internet capabilities and the Virtual console.

I also don't buy the Xbox 360 and PS3 on principle. I want to keep Nintendo in the running as a commited Games company, rather than give Microsoft and Sony a monopoly, who only treat video gaming as a subsidiary to a whole other deluge of products.

I have never had a problem with my copy of Oblivion...I enjoy playing it on the 360 and think it is a pretty good game overall.

To others I really enjoy the 360 the troubles run into with scratches on the disc and such as previously mention can be solved by caring for your machine. I also have a Wii and the ps2 while the ps3 may be better graphics I have not seen the need yet to drop that much money for it especially with a lack of decent games. I do also play games on pc as well.....though my gaming has really gone down hill since I started a new relationship back in Feb....what can I say she is much better to spend time with then My video games.*L*

You blame the 360 for your router? lol.

Well you might have input the wrong IP or your ip / mac code has been banned from having admin access. Im not to sure without being there.

There are ways to get mp3 players to connect to the 360 btw, I've had mine connected to it :P

But in my opinion - after the problems of the red circle of death and power supply issues. The 360 is the best current gen console out there. It's built well and designed well for games (just wish they added more RAM tbh).

Ps3 is a weaker copy, badly designed hardware (heres a tip - cell isnt designed for gaming, its a server number cruncher. dont listen to sony bull.)

It worked fine for the first couple of months... there is a bug for oblivion where Form_ID's are not reset or something, which is supposed to crash unpatched games after large amounts of playing time... updating the console is my only hope, because the game is currently unplayable. Any time I rest or go to a different zone, it freezes.

I blame the Xbox360 for freezing constantly, requiring people to tinker with their routers to connect to the bloody internet (it's a fairly common complaint, apparently). I just would not buy the thing again, after all the problems I've had with it.

I'm contemplating it for Forza 2, but I don't like the controller, I don't like the interface, and I don't like the games for the most part. I don't like first person shooters, which is what the XBox has hung their hat on. For a while, PS was mastering racing games, which is what I like. But the PS3 is priced out of my range and Gran Turismo has been frustrating me as of late. To GT: I have friends, you damn bastards. I like to race my cars against my friends. Your two player mode shouldn't be some half assed after thought. I understand that you couldn't get your on-line thing to work, whatever. I'd rather you bail on it than release a completely crappy on-line version (though Forza managed an online component...so, whatever...I haven't played it so maybe it sucks). But when I go visit my brother or my friends who play the game I shouldn't have to pull all the way out to the main menu to change options. And a field might be nice. There's more, but this is about the XBox, not my complaints about racing games.

None of the games on it, except possibly for the coming Eternal Sonata, interest me. Its library is very homogeneous and basically devoid of the types of games I enjoy. Here's hoping the PS3 gets affordable in the not too distant future, and that the Wii sees me through that period.

I've never been a fan of the Elder Scrolls, and Oblivion strikes me as quite meh, but it's already available on the PS3 should I be piqued at a later date. One or two interesting games is not enough for me to want to get a system, and unless the Xbox people manage to diversify the library, I doubt that will change.

Eternal Sonata is a Japanese RPG, yes?

If you like Japanese-style RPGs, like Final Fantasy, Xenogears and others, then you're right to avoid the Xbox 360. Any RPGs that the 360 gets are mostly Western-style, which, with a few exceptions, almost always follow the medieval fantasy/Dungeons and Dragons mold.

I do miss my Final Fantasy, and a lack of Japanese support is a noteworthy flaw.

I am looking forward to Bioshock though, an FPS/RPG taking place in a 1940s underwater city.

...I'd say that somewhat breaks the mold.

Morrowind was alright, though it was mainly because I read the ingame texts and had fun metagaming (such as building a small wall of pillows and jumping around everywhere using jump boosts). Oblivion just uses most of the Morrowind ingame texts. I also got it cheap (always a bonus).

One of the main reasons why I would want a PS3 would be for the new Armored Core game but since it was coming out on the Xbox 360 as well I don't have much reason to get a PS3.

I would be looking forward to Fallout 3 (though I'd get it on PC) but I am a bit apprehensive about how it will turn out.

I'll give it a 7

Yup.

I do miss my Final Fantasy, and a lack of Japanese support is a noteworthy flaw.

The Xbox and the 360 both flopped majorly in Japan, so it isn't surprising that they don't get much love in that department, but with Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon and Lost Oddysey (the latter both by ex-Square Hironobu Sakaguchi) they might succeed in getting the Japanese interested, which would make the 360 all that more interesting to me... if they can get that red ring of death business under control, already.

I am looking forward to Bioshock though, an FPS/RPG taking place in a 1940s underwater city.

It'll be interesting to see what they'll do with it, but I tend not to be able to stand FPS (Metroid Prime excluded, naturally).

It'll be great. The only reason Bethesda is even bothering to make a Fallout game (1 and 2 did not make much money) is because so many of them are fans of the series.
It'll be interesting to see what they'll do with it, but I tend not to be able to stand FPS (Metroid Prime excluded, naturally).
What made Metroid (for the Gamecube I presume) a good game as opposed to any other FPS? I found it extremely boring. Played it for about an hour.

It does look sweet. (http://gaygamer.net/2007/06/eternal_sonata_gameplay_explos.html)
It looks like every other JRPG, ever. Really, why are those games even called RPGs? Generally, you don't play a role and you follow a linear story with some occasional over-long, more distracting than anything, side-quests. I suspect it's just because they bare a resemblance to the original Final Fantasy and old Ultima games, which were RPGs.

As for me, I give the Xbox 360 a 9, only because I never rate anything perfectly. Since I got it about a month after it came out I've played and enjoyed a fair number of the games. My favorite game on the console so far is Saints Row. It's not even an RPG, yet it's got more role-playing elements than most every JRPG.

But really the number one reason I got an X-box 360 was because of Bioware's close association with Microsoft. For those of you who aren't aware, Bioware is the number one creator of Western RPGs. You know, the ones where you actually get to design your character to fill and role and follow a sotry in which you make decisions that effect the outcome of the game? There games have included Baldur's Gate, ,Baldur's Gate 2, Neverwinter Nights, Neverwinter Nights 2, Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire.
Their upcoming games are the Sci-Fi Action-RPG Mass Effect and the traditional Swords and Sorcery Dragon Age.

For me the 360 is the best console around. Well, the best next/current-gen console anyway. The Megadrive will always be the nuts, purely for Streets of Rage (zomfg, did they ever know how to make games back then!)

But yes, the Wii, whilst amusing, doesn't really appeal to me that much. I would consider myself among the hardcore when it comes to gaming, and the Wii really is a party-console (be honest now). The only real game worth getting, at the moment anyway, is Zelda (Red Steel sucks the elbows, and all FPS on Wii will continue to do so unless they seriously alter the control style).

The PS3 really doesn't appeal in the slightest. Not only is it overpriced (waaaaaay overpriced) but the games library is thoroughly uninspired, and looking to stay that way with pretty much every exclusive game (of note) rapidly spreading away to Microsoft. It is also huge and ugly, and burns with the heat of a million suns. And what the hell is up with a curved top?! How on earth are you meant to stack shit on top of that? Where is the dvd player, the Xbox, the 360, the stack of games or dvds or anything else you care to name meant to go?! Underneath? Try that and you'll be looking at a small pile of crushed pieces with your ton of console sitting on top looking smug and malicious. Yeah... PS3 doesn't rate highly in my books. Nor does Sony in general come to that.

Now don't get me wrong, there are definitely things the 360 could be better for having. HDMI cables coming standard, perhaps, a longer power cord, the possibility of dumping stuff from computer/mp3 player to the console rather than having to stream (is that possible? As far as I'm aware it isn't). But to be honest I don't use my console as a media centre. I use it for games and dvds, that's it. I have a stereo and a computer for the rest of it, so I don't need any music or anything on there, so it doesn't bother me. Also I've never had any problems with overheating or the red ring of death or anything like that. My 360 has run like a dream - that's what comes of treating your console with love and care :D

Oh and for those with problematic copies of Oblivion: when I first got mine it crashed frequently. I took it back to Game and got a new copy (free of charge because it was a faulty product) and it has worked fine ever since.

The only thing I would like is a longer power cable. Just a few more feet would be about perfect.

Also, just to insert some kind advice, what someone always has to keep in mind when discussing consoles, is that alot of the time one's idea of the "quality" of the console is usually based on taste.

For instance, I believe that the Wii and 360 are equal in their quality, but the 360 was just better for me. It had the games I wanted at a good price. Will I get a Wii at some point? Hopefully. Sadly, I suffer from the disease of "wanting not to go broke so I won't be able to see "Live Free or Die Hard" on the opening night."

...Don't know why I had to say all that...but...y'know...

um... Your copy of Oblivion is prolly not freezing because of your console. It's simply a very glitchy game, I have the PC version and it crashes way too often.
I have the PC version too, and it hasn't crashed once.

EDIT: as far as consoles go, I like the Wii and the Nintendo 64 (if only for Ogre Battle 64). Otherwise the get a meh from me. *prefers PC gaming*

I was over at my friend's house for the day and we had a 16 player lan party going on. He had his 360 over and I thought it was just fine. I'll give it an 8.

Can I give it a 0? Xbox 360 is almost completely identicl to the Xbox. Maybe the slightest, most unnoticible graphics improvement and HDDVD. Oh wait I forgot it comes in white, I'm so impressed.

The PS3 has lots of improvements. There are only two faults: A) The curved top and B) the heavy price tag.
The only reason the PS3 existed though is to keep up with the 360 and Wii. People were perfectly content with there PS2's. The Gamecube and Xbox sucked(especially Gamecube).

But in my opinion - after the problems of the red circle of death and power supply issues. The 360 is the best current gen console out there. It's built well and designed well for games (just wish they added more RAM tbh).

If it weren't for Gears of War, the 360 would've had 256Mb of RAM… good thing Epic forced Microsoft to double it.

If games keep crashing on your 360, it's usually a disc read error… the laser might need to be cleaned, or something like that anyway.

8/10 putting it above the PS3 (5/10 with the possibility of getting a 6 or 7/10 if they dropped the price) and the Wii (7/10. That could rise with a better library). If they expanded the library, it could get a 9/10 from me.
