SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Robots from around the world will compete for supremacy in soccer, combat, sumo wrestling and other arenas beginning Friday at a machine version of the Olympics in San Francisco.

This year's RoboGames features 83 categories, 18 of them devoted to walking "android" robots designed in human forms.

A highlight of the event remains robot combat in which machines weighing as much as 340 pounds (154 kilograms) destroy one another in what amounts to a demolition derby behind bulletproof glass.

The last robot still in operating condition wins.

Battle robots feature weapons such as saw blades, flame throwers, and hydraulic hammers.

"The combat robots keep getting better each year," said RoboGames founder David Calkins.

"We've got teams flying in from around the US and Canada, Brazil, Mexico, the UK, Netherlands, Australia, and even Iran just to compete in the robot combat."

Wow. All I can say is... Awesome! Hopefully we'll be seeing footage of the competition on Youtube in the very near future.

Oh yes and...

Constructicons! Merge to form... Devastator!

Maybe it was because I was too old when they came out first, but I never liked the look of transformers....

Dude. I wasn't even born when G1 transformers first came out, in 1984. 20 years later, they're making an impressive comeback. I totally fell in love with the original series a couple of years ago. Now I'm stocking up on TF nostalgia before prices soar through the roof after the movie comes out July 7.

Well you have to admit this does put Robot Wars UK to shame. I mean these battlebots are bipedal! And they don't just disable each other, or throw them in pits, they completely annihilate them apparently.

If it's half as entertaining as that old battle robot show in t.v., I'll be watching the clips too. :)

So I read the thread title, and I thought to myself, "There is no possible way for this to be anything other than awesome."

And I was right.

You have to give some credit to an Iranian who would walk up to a U.S. Customs officer with a battle robot. I might be a fan already. :p

While I grew up during the Beast Wars era (which I still love), Transformers: The Movie is the best kid's movie ever...

"Who are you calling inferior!?"

Transformers : The Movie = Best Kid's Movie Ever Indeed

I'm getting pretty excited about the Micheal Bay movie. Though I'm not extremely happy with the Decepticon CG designs. Megatron looks like Hell spawn. I mean he look's like a freaking Demon with a meat-grinder in the middle of his faceplate. That's just not Megatron.

That's... Demontron.

It's not Megatron's style, but it is freakin' cool. That design should be it's own new Transformer, though.

I just wish the movie would have Unicron in it. And a resurrected Orson Welles to voice him.

I'm tentative about the movie, though... Michael Bay is directing it...
Hopefully, it'll be fine, as long as Ben Affleck isn't in it. Hopefully...

Well time will tell I suppose. Personally I think it's a good thing Unicron isn't in the movie. It detracts away from his significance in the first movie. Too much of a good thing can be bad for you.

EDIT: OH poop. The link doesnt work.
