Toasted Cheese Sandwich...yummy!

I am just getting mighty hungry, and I fancied a nice toasted cheese sandwich. It is in the sandwich toaster as I type and consists of wholemeal bread, very good cheddar, thinly sliced red onion and some sweet pickle (a bit like branstone, but nicer)

I was just thinking, if you could have a snack or a meal right now, delivered to you, what would you choose?.........recipes gratefully accepted by the way!

A fried bacon (smoked, obv.) and onion sandwich, with brown sauce.

Or cheese (mature cheddar, also obv.) and tomato on toast with Worcestershire sauce.

indeed Sir!

I am rather partial at the moment to a nice bit of apple wood smoked mature cheddar, and am a fan of white Stilton with apricots. I also recommend that you try a slice of Stilton on a ginger nut...sounds terrible but it isn't, I promise!

White bread with garlic butter spread on one side of each slice. Sharp cheddar or swiss. (If you don't have either of those american works.) Grilled until golden brown and crispy. I only get these after concerts from some smelly hippie in the parking lot for $1.

I guess you all would call it mature cheddar. Swiss cheese here is a white with holes in it. I don't know what Emmental is? American cheese is a cheap cheese sold here in america. It is terrible unless its melted on a sandwich. I love culture barriers. Whats brown sauce, Wendsleydale, Stilton, Caturday, Lamb Hotpot?

i was amazed when i went into a wal mart in california... there were three kinds of cheese: "swiss" (kinda white), "american" (yellowish), and the mysterious 'orange cheese' with no name...... oooooooOOOOOhhhh...

Brown sauce is sauce that is ummmm brown...the closest thing that you have in the US is A! Steak Sauce, but it is not as good.

No really, Emmental is swiss cheese, I suspect it is one and the same, except that it is called Emmental here and just known by it's country of origin in America, are you serious that you don't know what Wensleydale and Stilton are? WOW, they are very good English Cheeses. Wensleydale cheese is a cheese produced in the town of Hawes in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire, England The Wensleydale pastures give the cheese the unique flavour for which it is renowned. Good Wensleydale has a supple, crumbly, moist texture and resembles a young Caerphilly. The flavour suggests wild honey balanced with a fresh acidity. There are currently just six dairies licensed to make Stilton, each being subject to regular audit by an independent inspection agency accredited to European Standard EN 45011. At present, all but one of the licenced dairies are based in the Vale of Belvoir, which straddles the Nottinghamshire-Leicestershire border. This area is commonly regarded as the heartland of Stilton production, with dairies located in the villages of Colston Bassett, Cropwell Bishop and Long Clawson. The only current dairy producing Stilton elsewhere (at Hartington in Derbyshire) owes this fact to a native of the Vale who bought the dairy over a century ago.

To be called blue Stilton, a cheese must:

Be made only in the three counties from local milk, which is pasteurised before use.
Be made only in a traditional cylindrical shape.
Be allowed to form its own crust or coat.
Be unpressed.
Have delicate blue veins radiating from the centre.
Have a "taste profile typical of Stilton".
Stilton has a typical fat content of ~35%, and protein content of ~23%.

Lancashire hotpot is a culinary dish consisting essentially of meat, onion and potatoes left to bake in the oven all day in a heavy pot and on a low heat, if it is Lamb, then that is the meat used.

As for a Caturday, I have no idea..

Today's American cheese is generally no longer made from a blend of cheeses, but instead is manufactured from a set of ingredients which meets the legal definition of cheese and includes "whey protein concentrates" regularly imported from other countries.

The common use of the marketing label "American Cheese" for "processed cheese" combined with the prevalence of processed cheese in the U.S. compared to the rest of the world has led to the term American cheese being used in the United States synonymously in place of processed cheese.

So, it actually isn't cheese at all.....eeewww

i had a microwaved cheese and worcester sauce sandwich for my lunch yesterday cuz i don't have a toasty maker. it was almost impossible to eat. i'm a big fan of the toasted BLT myself. if i'm feeling really fat though and desire something that'll give me an instant coronary i like to have a burger with a fried egg, bacon and melted cheese with both ketchup and brown sauce and some slces of pickle if i have any. maybe some tomatoe too if i want to make some concession to being healthy. happens once in several months though that one.

ugh, you cannot judge cheeses in the us based on what you'd find at a wal-mart. even you average deli counter has more cheese than that.

the orange cheese was probably either 'american' colored with annato or a very mild cheddar or cheese food type product. generic "swiss" is a very mild emmental-style cheese, but you can get real emmental, here, too. my local grocery store has, i imagine, close to 100 types of cheese available in it, including stilton, wendsleydale, emmental and loads of other varieties, and i'm not exactly in an exclusive region of the country.

1824-1831 In a time when a kings palate was supreme. Henderson William Brand, chef to England's King George IV, creates a special sauce for the king's table. The king is so impressed with the new sauce, he proclaims it "A1"

It was invented here, apparently.

my favourite drunken snack after a night out or a night at work is two poached eggs on toast with salt and pepper. i am a master at poached eggs.

during the day, potato salad is good if i have the time and forethought to prepare, onion, garlic and chives are a must though. tomatoe salad is also good if there's coriander to use. i always have onion, balsamic and mixed herds so even without coriander it's do-able.

My favorite thing after I've stayed up all night drinking is one of the sausage egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches from Danka's Deli in Yardville, NJ. It sucks driving out there with a hangover, but the breakfast sandwiches are worth it.

Yeps. I agree with you on that.
Also, I get migraines, so I really can't eat much of anything right now. Especially cheese. I'm only allowed four cheeses: "good quality" American cheese (ew even if it is "good quality"), cottage cheese (never liked), cream cheese, and ricotta. I'll eventually be allowed to have goat cheese and fresh mozarrella. What happened to my cheddar? Or brie? Or any sort of blue cheese? :(

English muffins are the most divine type of bread, slightly sweet, spongy, a bit like sordough, I guess, shaped like crumpets. The best thing to put the fried egg on, yolk down, which then melts into the butter... and some butter fried mushrooms on the side, with a couple of grilled tomatoes... perhaps a good quality chipolata or two for an extra lavish snack.

That is my favourite snack. And breakfast. Actually, if I could, I'd eat kedgeree for breakfast every day.

Right after that, chicken liver, but made with butter, not chicken fat. And mustard mash (English mustard, of course).

Can I also put a case forward for green tomato chutney in a cheese sandwich? The acidity goes so well with strong Cheddar.

American cheese 72 slices of ummm ummm! I love it on burgers, or when back from the pub just grab a slice or two out tha fridge. Brown soauce is brow(obviously) and a tad spicey. Wendslydale is white crumbly cheese, it's okay but it is so mild it almost has no taste(I guess thats why they put cranberries and such in it?) Stilton is a strong tasting blue cheese, that is at it's best when it smells of sweaty socks(it too is quite crumbly) I have no idea whay a caturday is, but a hot pot is a sorta stew, with slices of potatoe on the top.

I guess like a cobbler, without the scones(or do you call them biscuits?) and sliced spuds instead.
