European League (football).

If they made up a European League for football, what twenty teams do you think should be in it?
I'm thinking:
Arsenal
Chelsea
Liverpool
Manchester United
Lyon
Bayern Munich
Schalke 04
VfB Stuttgart
Werder Bremen
AC Milan
AS Roma
Inter Milan
Juventus
Ajax
PSV Eindhoven
Benfica
Porto
Sporting Lisbon
Barcelona
Real Madrid

A good starting list - I would maybe replace one of the German sides (Schalke?) with Valencia or Seville though

That was too hard a decision to make.
Also, I'm not sure France deserves a side at all.

I think Lille are the current French form team
I, personally, would have Middlesbrough in that list ;)

I would have kicked out a couple of the German clubs & put Paris Saint Germain or Marseille in there.
Is this league to be based on current form, or on the overall history & performance of the club?

Both. Which is why Germany got as many spots as England.

I would make the teams qualify so they would actually deserve their place instead of making an "european" league with teams from the only seven countries. This way teams from minor leagues would have a fair chance to qualify.

I find that irony hilarious, considering you included Fenerbache, whose fan stabbed a couple of Leeds supporters to death.

A couple doesn't equal 96.

It was 39. You're thinking of Hillsborough, which was:
a) an accident
and
b) the police's fault

But, with the exception of Portugal, they're all awful. I would suggest the lowest ranked team of each nation be replaced by the winner of the national league each season, however, there is no point allowing the likes of FC Basle to play.

If the Liverpool fans could behave in a fashion more befitting humans, it wouldn't have happened. But its never their fault is it? Just like in Athens?

I originally thought of something radical: all teams but the winner of the European League are relegated back to their national leagues, and the European League is then made up of the winners of last season's national leagues and the reigning premier.

I agree - it would be like the UEFA cup if the crappy countries were in it. That cup is so bad that I don't know if some of the countries are made up, let along the team names
It's all like Middlesbrough vs FC Krygnorvotspor (Republic of Maldovainia)

Again, you were thinking of Hillsborough. What happened there was that they let in more fans than could fit, and when they tried to escape the crush onto the pitch, the police forced them back into the crowd.

What a pile of cr@p
For all its built-in bias, the Champions League is more inclusive than the set-ups suggested here. What about teams outside of England, Spain, Italy, Germany.....
What you are suggesting is basically a separate league for the self-selecting G14 and that would benefit only those clubs and SkyTV. It would do nothing for football in the wider world. What about promotion and relegation. If you are honestly suggesting a European league then you need to open it up to other clubs.
A suggestion:
A league of 18 clubs playing 34 games each (current UEFA recommended limit)
ONE guaranteed place each for a club from
Spain
England
Italy
Germany
Holland
France
Portugal
and possibly (open for debate)
Greece
Scotland
Belgium
Turkey
Russia
Czech Rep
leaving four places that can be fought over by smaller nations.
The problem of who plays in the league would be open to the national FAs. It should rotate somehow otherwise Real Madrid or AC Milan might never play in their native leagues again, effectively removing them from their nation's football for ever.
I would also recommend that the lowest two national teams from the "guaranteed" slots be relegated every season into the qualifying nations pool and the two nations with the next highest UEFA ranking get those slots.

If they manage to qualify they might not be as awful as you think they are. And who cares if they're worse than other teams? This was supposed to be an European league, right? And not an six or seven nations league.

Listen, it's not my fault they suck. If they want in, pick up their game!
Ok, how's about this: four each from England, Germany and Italy, two each from Portugal, the Netherlands and Spain, one from France and one random champion from a random country (except for those already listed).

How when you are trying to rig the competition?
your suggestion effectively strangles competition ensuring that TV revenues get funnelled into the 'big' leagues so that they can maintain their dominant position. It does not give clubs from other nations a chance to grow and prosper. You have to have a system whereby everyone gets a fair chance and where clubs are rewarded for playing good football regardless of whether they play in the Italian, Russian or Swedish league.

Uhh, no. The Champions League is a knockout tournament, not a league.
It's a football competition whose mechanics can be easily played around with. Just extend the knockout phase and the qualifiers to provide more matches. The range of teams there seems more than appropriate to retain.

Just 20 teams, and from just 7 countries? Against 27 countries in the EU? Not enough.
We might build a system with 4 Conferences. Let's say Western (Ireland, UK, France, BeNeLux, Spain, Portugal), Central (Italy, Slovenija, Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Malta), Northern (Denmark, Finnland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), and Eastern (Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus).
Anyway, meh.

I think that Liverpools reputation was such that the police thought they were causing trouble and decided to stop them getting on the pitch, making matters much worse. It seems they only opened the gates when people started dying
