household chores....

how are they divided up in your house? which ones do you hate? which ones do you love? (love here meaning I like it more than I hate anything else)

what chores do you do daily? weekly? monthly?

which ones do you find idiotic?

answer the poll as well.

also, answer all the questions......yeah.

me

how are they divided up in your house?
everyone basically does whatever needs to be done if they see that it needs to be done, with a few exceptions, the kids don't mow the lawn, hubby doesn't wash dishes, and I don't do laundry. Other than that it's pretty much whoever gets to it first.

which ones do you hate?
I loathe doing laundry, really mostly I hate the folding/ironing/hanging/putting away part. I haven't had to do any in like 7 years, except for when I didn't get things put in the dirty clothes pile in time or if I needed something and hubby wasn't home (like if he was out of town or something)

which ones do you love? (love here meaning I like it more than I hate anything else)
I really do like dusting, because I can see progress. Other chores seem to get undone as soon as I do them, so it's pretty frustrating. Dusting stays done for a few days.

what chores do you do daily? weekly? monthly?

daily- I wash dishes, sweep, cook, clean the bathroom, mop most of the hard floors and vacuum all of the carpet

weekly- I dust and wash windows and mirrors, and strip the beds down for hubby to wash the bedding

monthly- I clean out the fridge, re-organize the movies, and wash all the curtains, also I vacuum anything that needs it (like the couch or whatever)

which ones do you find idiotic?
sorting laundry......I would much rather just throw everything in together on cold......but I guess that's why I don't do laundry anymore (hubby got tired of pink underwear)

your turn!

The lone vote right now, the one for "everything"?

That's me.

The only bearable one of the lot is doing the laundry. But only because I pretty much never iron anything...

My least favorite has to be cleaning the bathroom. Scrubbing the shower is a pain in the ass, scrubbing the toilet is nasty. It has to be done though.

I bought one of those sponge mops for scrubbing the shower........it looks like this
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/21OPmqJ0S%2BL._AA200_.jpg

and that's all I use it for, I spray on the cleaner and scrub with that......it's much easier (esp. considering how short I am)

it wouldn't be so lame if people would answer all the questions and if certain other people wouldn't spam it.

how are they divided up in your house? which ones do you hate? which ones do you love? (love here meaning I like it more than I hate anything else)
I live alone, so they're done by me or not at all. Except when my girlfriend comes up, she seems to enjoy doing them, and generally demands that she do the washing up... Which used to be annoying, because she was rubbish, but I've trained her to do it properly now, so fine.

I hate emptying the bin and cleaning the oven.

what chores do you do daily? weekly? monthly?
Washing up tends to get done once or twice a week, depending on my mood. Often when I've ran out of dishes/saucepans/cutlery/whatever.
Laundry, when I'm low on clothes.
The bin, when it's full, or once a week (whichever is sooner).

Everything else in a frantic rush in a few days before my girlfriend visits (once or twice a month). Oh, and I tend to do a quick hoover if I've cut my hair.
Washing the floor tends to get put off forever; I always think it'll take ages, despite only having about ten square feet of floor.
I haven't cleaned the oven since I moved in...

which ones do you find idiotic?

Most of them... It's just me here, and I don't care, so why bother?
Although "ironing"... I did that once. Exactly once. It's bollocks. Why does anybody do that?

Actually, my flat's surprisingly clean considering the neglect it suffers.

I hate vacuuming. Which doesn't matter, cause I've got all wodden and tiled floors in the house, so I can just sweep and mop them.
And I hate doing the ironing... but my BF doesn't mind doing that, so currently he's doing the very few bits I have that need ironing for me whenever he come to Dublin :D

I do the indoor crap and my husband does the outdoor crap.

it used to be that I did laundry, and he did the dishes, but that fell to the wayside when we got a yard.

I don't mind cleaning the bathrooms, I HATE tidying...my belief being that if my kids make the mess, they need to clean it up....If I have to pick it up, I put it in the garbage.

daily:
kitchen/dishes
tidying

weekly:
mopping floor
dusting
vacuuming
bed stripping
bathrooms
clean out the frig.

more than weekly but less than daily:
laundry

monthly:
hmmmm, I don't know what I do monthly....nothing on a schedule

my mentor always told me that trying to keep a clean house and raising kids at the same time is like trying to shovel snow in a blizzard, you work hard, and feel like crap.....but at the end of the day it looks worse than when you started.

that being said, for all my cleaning, most days I let the random crap lay around, until someone calls and says they are "dropping by" which usually means they are already pulling into my driveway, which is when it's laundry basket time

basically I grab an empty laundry basket and the kids and I throw everything we can in it and then I stash that in my room LOL

perfect. ;)

I learned from my mother who was caught on one occasion stuffing dirty dishes into the oven and dirty clothes into the bathtub "if you keep the curtain closed they never know!" she would say......

can't say it's that bad here, but it's never picture perfect ;)

I do all the chores...

and now I have to take care of a few dishes, pick up trash and clean out a smelly cat box...

I do everything in my apartment except for mowing lawns (since there is none.)

The worst for me to do is laundry. Everything else I can do in my boxer shorts; I can stop to eat or just work on it without stopping. Laundry I have to get dressed and go out so that I can pay money and sit around doing nothing productive while I wait for it to finish. It sucks.

I do the bathroom, vacuuming, floor scrubbing, laundry, tidying and repair.

The other adult does dishes and dusting. Though I wash dishes about 30% of the time. Less, if I can get away with it.

We share yardwork.

I hate doing dishes. I'd rather scrub a toilet. I hate the smell, the feel of the soap, the texture of soggy food bits, the creeping ache up your legs and back as you stand there, immobile from the waist down.

Dishes are done once a day, laundry and tidying are about twice a week. Vacuuming is once a week. Kitchen floor and bathroom are once every two weeks.

I don't find any of it idiotic, but I do think that we should design our homes to be more resistant to mildew, mold, vermin, etc. so that when we do clean, we actually can get to it all. I find our current paradigms about building envelopes and interior building partitions to be idiotic, but that's another thread.

Daily:
Feeding the cats and making sure they have enough water

More than weekly but less than daily:
Litter boxes

Weekly:
Mopping
Emptying the trashcan in my bathroom

My brothers' chores are to empty the dishwasher together and to sweep the floors before I mop them. My mom does pretty much everything else.

how are they divided up in your house?
The one who has more free time (from work) does more.

which ones do you hate?
Ironing (I don't iron anything) and washing the sauna. Vacuuming (poll options)

which ones do you love?
eh? hmmmm. outdoor tasks

what chores do you do daily?
dishes (usually)

weekly?
laundry
vacuuming (usually)
dusting
bathrooms
something I can't think of right now

monthly?
nothing. I mop the floor when I think it needs mopping etc. If we're busy, we can live in a very messy apartment (hey, damn, we don't live in an apartment anymore. In a very messy house)

which ones do you find idiotic?
Some people clean their bathrooms daily, vacuum daily and mop few times a week. I think that's idiotic. (oops, like Smunkee, sorry!) I think that's waste of time.

weekly- I dust and wash windows and mirrors, and strip the beds down for hubby to wash the bedding
You wash windows weekly????
I do it once or twice a year. Do you live close to big roads, or?

part of that is OCD, part of it is we have allergies so mopping and vacuuming daily cuts down on sinus infections, and the window thing....well, really if my windows are clean I don't have to use lightbulbs during the day, most of our backyard is dirt and since it's been dry/windy my windows have been really dirty lately.

We all do everything. There is no division of labor. My son and daughter have the same chores. It's all group effort between me and the kids. I said I hate laundry most because it's never done. As soon as everything is done and put away, someone's taking something off that needs to be washed. They bring their laundry down to the basement and put it in the right pile. I do the laundry and we all put our own things away.

Dishes -- everyone clears their spots at the table and puts their own in the dishwasher. We all work together to put stuff away.

Vacuumming, mopping, sweeping -- my son, who is 5, loves to vacuum, mop, and sweep. I do not discourage this little oddity of his. In fact the two of them have actually fought over who gets to use the swiffer. I usually mop, just because of the added danger of large amounts of water being around, but my 8 year old is okay with it.

I do the litter box. We all feed, water, and brush the cat as necessary.

Outdoor chores -- these are the ones I like (except shovelling snow, that gets wearysome) but I have broken down and have a guy come and mow the lawn. It was taking me something like 5 hours to do with a crappy little push mower; he can zoom around on one of those giant ride-on deals and be done in 30 minutes. It gives me more time to enjoy doing the gardening that I really like doing anyway.

how are they divided up in your house?
Well, I share a flat with two othe rpeople and the cleaning chores rotate weekly, everyone does their own laundry/dishes.
which ones do you hate?
I don't absolutely hate anything, but many things can become uncomfortable if inconsiderate people leave things a way they shouldn't and the don't clean it up themselve sbut wait until the weekend for the designated cleaning-person to clena it for them.
which ones do you love? (love here meaning I like it more than I hate anything else)
I'll make enemies here, but I actually rather enjoy doing the dishes and the laundry.
what chores do you do daily?
Dishes only, really.
weekly?
well, cleaning the bathroom an dthe kitchen gets done weekly around here, but with us being three people, I myself do it only every third week. I have no set laundry schedule, but I guess it's somewhere in there at around very one-and-a-half weeks or so. I do my shopping about once a week, too.
monthly?
well.. I have to admit that really cleaning my room, i.e. more than just surface vacuuming, take splace only on a monthly schedule.. *hides* I hope I never fall in love with a perosn allergic to dust or something.
which ones do you find idiotic?
Cleaning the windows. I do so about once a year.

Oh, that explains a lot. I'm so thankful we don't have any allergies. (I bet you know that studies say too clean environment causes many of todays common allergies. Of course it's too late when one already has it.)

I used to wash windows weekly when I stayed in Spain. I just had to. But we don't have that problem around here. That would be pain in the ass. All triple windows, 8 normal, 3 huge and 8 small ones.

yeah, my kids' allergies aren't as bad as hubby's and mine because for a while after they were born we were living in Arizona, and everything was nice so I didn't have to vacuum so much......right now part of the problem is my neighbor's cottonwood tree which I am highly allergic to, so it's blooming now and no matter what we do some of it gets into the house.....bleh.

:( Actually I'm a bit allergic to birches and so is my partner. But this year was quite easy.

How one gets these plant allergies? I'm allergic to olive trees and I was 8 when I was on my first holiday in Mediterranean. No olive trees before that.

Dusting annoys me to no end, not because I dislike doing it but because my mom is ridiculously determined is to always find more dust somewhere. She wipes the walls, behind paintings, behind the freezer, behind the stove, on top of books in the bookshelf, on top of doors, on top of curtain rods... I'll never understand the logic in dusting places that are not normally visible.

Mom also thinks everything including t-shirts absolutely must be ironed and I'm doing the ironing but that is okay since it seems normal compared to the war on dust.

It's really random. Our family does whatever chores need to be done, depending who's home at a particular time. I wash and fold everyone's clothes, wash dishes, vacuum the house, dust the furniture, wash all the cars, and help my brothers with homework.
