This time against the forcibly abandoned pets. Hopefully it's just exagerated allegations.

For nearly two years, pet owners from the low-lying Louisiana parish of St. Bernard have accused sheriff's deputies of having wantonly killed dozens of dogs they forced evacuees to leave behind during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, without regard to the dogs' size or the potential threat they might pose.

One owner said her family was forced at gunpoint to leave its dog behind. Another owner said residents became frantic when, they said, they overheard one deputy claim that "once everybody's gone, we're going to have target practice tonight." They claim in court papers that deputies were under " authorization...of their superiors and employers.

It's lamentable, but can't be unexpected. When law and order breaks down so completely as it did in New Orleans, people go looney.

Can you imagine if the contingency plans had to accommodate pet evacuations, too?

I think there may have been a more sensitive way to discuss it around a family that just abandoned Fido, but leaving the animals to starve is just as bad as letting any wild species overpopulate.

You mean to tell me that the Incredible Journey isn't true! Disney are just such fibbers.

Which is why you keep small animals and smuggle them away in your luggage. :) like a kitty for example.

When it's the purveyors of Law and Order themselves, it not only can't be expected, it's an actionable offence if it occurs.

NOLA had (and probably still has) some of the scummiest, most low-life and worthless police in the country, as I understand it.

If some worthless jackbooted swamp-rat tried to strong arm me away from my pets, especially in a real anarchy like the Katrina aftermath, it would be pretty tempting to shoot him.

Which is worse, losing your dog or having somebodies loved one's remains eaten to add insult to injury? I say that they made the right call and they would have died anyway. Oh, and if you're going to be complaining why aren't you in New Orleans right now helping out?
