...

Can't you people broaden your horizons just a bit? One-Winged Angel and Passions? What the hell?

I doubt it's the single best, but a lot of great music comes from the composer Yasonori Mitsuda, who might be best known for his work on Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross.

Listed in random order:

Chrono Trigger:

World Revolutions
Last Battle
Longing of the Wind(Wind Scene for those who like the badly translated name)
Chrono Trigger
Schala's Theme
Corridors of Time
Wings of Time
To Faraway Times
Battle with Magus
Robo's Theme

Chrono Cross:

Dreaming by the Shore of Another World
Fields of Time
Radical Dreamers Unstolen Jewel
The Dream That Time Dreams
The Girl Who Stole The Stars
Magical Dreamers
Arni Village(Both Home and Another)
Victory: Call of Summer

At the moment that's all I can think of, though I'm sure that when I put my mind to it I'll come up with more later.

I liked

Vaygr Battle (alternate) theme, from Homeworld2;
Chiasm's 'Isolated' and Darling Violetta's 'Smaller God', from Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines;
Coast Line, Factions Theme, Emperor Kisu's Theme, Garden of Seborhin Theme from Guild Wars
Lots of tracks from Neverwinter Nights
The menu theme from Battlefield 1942;
Virtually all the tracks from The Longest Journey (available here) (http://www.longestjourney.com/download/music/)
Contribution, Top Hush, Noctis Labyrinthus and more from Descent 3
Many tracks from the Total War series, but especially the credits music, We Are All One and Forever
Various instrumental/ambient tracks from Dreamfall;
The absolutely stunning Dantooine Ambient theme, as well as Bastila's theme, Carth's Theme, and various other ambient tracks from Knights of the Old Republic;
Eat Your Potatoes (quiet Mix) from Age of mythology, and several others.

I have more but will post them as I remember. :p

Everything from Guilty Gear. Seriously, best soundtrack ever. (Particular favorites: Holy Orders[Be Just or Be Dead]{Particularly the GGX version}, Haven't You Got Eyes in Your Head?, Noontide, Momentary Life, Simple Life, Writhe in Pain, Feel a Fear, Still in the Dark, Meet Again.)
A similar but stylistically different entry: Everything from Melty Blood.

(If you haven't heard of either, look 'em up. They're worth the time.)

Dancing Mad, Kefka's theme from FF VI. You thought One-Winged Angel was epic? Try 10 minutes of awesome on for size.

Liber Fatali (Or however it was spelled) FF VIII. Game wasn't the greatest, but it's a wonderful song.

Old school bleeping and blooping: Star Control 2.

Planescape: Torment has a couple of good ones.

EDIT: HOLY CRAP, how did I forget Grim Fandango?!

Medal of Honor (All of it)

Medal of Honor: Underground (All of it. In Particular, Escape from Casablanca, Dark Wewelsburg and Each Night He Comes Home To Me.)

Medal of Honor: Frontline (All of it. In particular Arnhem Knights.)

The music for all above three games fitted the mood of the games perfectly in level and introduction and menu ambience.

Wonderful, wonderful. All Composed by Michael Giacchino.

Rage Racer: Thumping and far out music that helped the occassional boredom and gave a boost to the andreneline.

Destruction Derby. A few gems there.

GTA: Class

GTA: London 1969

Anything and everything by Nobuo Uematsu, the composer behind the musical scores of every final fantasy.

Also he remixes his own music with his rock group, The Black Mages.

Non-Final Fantasy however, I can't really say there's anything that reaches out and grabs me, besides the soundtrack to Xenogears, composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. I like Id's theme the best, closely followed by Emperor of Darkness, the Wind is calling, Omen, and Thames, men of the Sea.

I've found most pc games have not had as good music as old Amiga ones. Flashback, The Settlers come to mind as having good music.

BF1942 didn't have too bad menu music. I'm not too fond of all the Japanese fantasy games music, it's all a bit cliche for me.

I would have to say from Ocarana of Time... the soundtrack is just great. Especially the bandit hideout music.

And uhmm Ace Combat 4... the song that plays during the final battle. It sets the pace and the mood so well.

And now, to go old-school...

The music from Blaster Master (NES) was pretty awesome. At least the third level and the sixth level were among the best ever...the fourth world's music was terrible.

Final Fantasy music is my favorite, particularly from Final Fantasy III/VI, but then again that's the only one I've played through all the way.
Particularly from FF III/VI:

....Hmm, I really can't choose since they're all fantastic. I guess the only one that isn't great is the Battle Theme music. But of course, Nobuo Uematsu greatly improved on the basic tune in FF VII and FF VIII (never played anything past that).

I also loved the stuff from Advent Children, but I mention it in passing because it's not a game.

I also enjoy the music from:
Neverwinter Nights
Half Life (although it's only like one or two tracks in the 1st game, right?)
Chrono Trigger
Donkey Kong Country.....I want to say III? The one where you're playing as Dixie and Kiddy and you need to rescue Donkey and Diddy.
The Mario Bros./Sonic games, but I don't feel it's at the same level as the others
Zelda, the main theme is catchy (but again, not quite as good as the others)
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Good call on the Guile music from Street Fighter II, I had totally forgotten about that!

5 pages of thread and no one has mentioned Snatcher by the famous Hideo Kojima? It was for the Sega CD way back in the day and it had very great music (if your the Blues and Jazzy type) here's a sample (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Cc0p1wYZIOM). If you skip the first 2 minutes and 55 seconds this is the music which made the game famous among members of the old video game culture back then (and plus its by Hideo Kojima so you can't go wrong there :)).

Actually, the music was composed by former Nine Inch Nails drummer Chris Vrenna, not Reznor.

Reznor's only contribution to video game music was the Quake I soundtrack...still one of the best gaming soundtracks, in my opinion. :)
