Hey, I was talking to a guy from Florida who is really into this saying. From what I here its really popular in the south. Is this true, and if so, when where why and how?

I live in Houston, and used to live in a hick town, and have NEVER heard it used in a serious tone, only in a jokingly or sarcastic manner.

In Soviet Russia, the South knows it's place.

Wait, isn't Chechnya in the south?

The South lost. Deal with it.

The Southern cause was not noble in the least. Deal with it.

Slaves did not have good lives on the plantations. Deal with it.

The South is NOT going to "rise again". Deal with it.

I hope this helps that delusional man in Florida.

I think we should have let the South go it's own way. That's a lot less Red States and a lot less Red Necks for the rest of the country.

That being said, no, the South won't rise again.

That is an expression from the 40s and 50s, when there hadn't been a president from the South in 80 so years. Now the expression is "the North will rise again", since there hasn't been a president from the Rustbelt since JFK.

I have one thing to say to your friend: Wake up. The South has risen again, and its is doing very well. It has the largest growth in both population (in the 1980s the South for the first time in History out populated the New England and Mid-atlantic states combined) and GDP (Heavy Industry is moving south, Kentucky and Tennessee are set to out-produce Michigan in Cars by 2020) out of any section of the County, and 5 out of the last 7 elected presidents have hailed from there, with the other 2 coming from California (could count Gerald Ford, but I said elected).

The South won't rise again, and we have no intention I've seen of doing so aside from a few rednecks.

Although both Bushes hailed from Texas, Texas only joined the Confederate South because if they had joined the North, they would be completely surrounded by Confederate forces (also, George H. Bush was born in Massachusetts). And anyway, are you really proud to have George W. Bush come from the "South," because I sure ain't proud of him coming from Texas.

Proud? Did i cast the impression that I was from the South? I live Just South of SFC. What I mean is that compared to the other regions of the US, the "New" South is growing in population and influence, and the North is the one that is really getting left behind (although that might change soon).

Because that's not stereotypical or anything...

As a Christian from the South who has never been anything but cordial and friendly to homosexuals (or at least has never been non-cordial to a homosexual because of his/her orientation), here is my take on the subject. There are two types of people who revere the Confederate memory.

Type 1) Those who I believe New Stalinberg was trying to refer to, who are filled with racism and all sorts of other intolerances (which, coincidentally, are not characteristics of Jesus Christ). Unfortunately, ignorant people are typically louder than others and so they garner alot of attention.

Type 2) Those who are serious in studying the Civil War period, who see the honour in fighting valiantly for what one passionately believes in (the sovereignty of the state over the federal gov't, the right of a sovereign state to repel an attack on their homeland, etc.), and quite often are descendants of those honorable soldiers. I doubt you would hear one of these people actually utter "The South will rise again". But they will let it be known that they take pride in the fact that their ancestors fought against the odds below, yet was winning the war for 3 years and took 5 years to finally defeat.

Total population 22,000,000 to 9,000,000 (5,500,000 free)
Soldiers 2,200,000 to 1,064,000
Railroad miles 21,788 (71%) to 8,838 (29%)
Manufactured items 90 percent to 10 percent
Firearm production 97 percent to 3 percent

Anyhow, there is a very informative (and sometimes disturbing) book called "Confederates in the Attic" by Tony Horowitz. I don't know if it answers the question of the original poster but it is worth a read. Unfortunately, I read it over 2 years ago so I can't really summarize here.

i seem to recall in the 1960s this phrase tended to be fallowed by an observation on the boyancy of fecal matter. but perhaps that is a bit harsh.

personally i'd just as soon see every bioregeon administered locally. preferably by the tribal elders of indiginous cultures soverign prior to the terrorist invasion of 1492.

I live in the South and never hear this said unless jokingly.

With the number of African-Americans in the South, and the major cities that are majority African-American it is almost impossible the South will "rise again". (And the majority of my friends are African-American, so not being racist, saying that the South has more African-Americans in the cities than other races really.)

That is why it is so funny when people even try to say the South is racist or backwards, only small groups are. Considering the demographics of TODAY the South is really not racist, maybe the white old timers but their dieing fast.

You know, I moved up north to get away from all the damned bible thumping fundies, and what did I find? A bunch of damned liberals. Talk about damned if you do and damned if you don't.

If the south "rises again" (it didn't reach heights all that spectacular in the first place), it will simply get ground into a pulp again.

The South lost. Cry me a river a river and then build a bridge to get the fuck over it.

Says who? History is not predictable.

Says common sense. Even most people in the south it would seem think seceding is a bad idea. And for what would they secede now? The right to bash gays or something? That's not likely to win them much sympathy from the rest of the west. Except maybe Poland.

I've always been annoyed by that "argument" too. It's not as though all state governments are just waiting for the day that the benevolent protection of Uncle Sam is lifted so they can revoke the civil liberties of their citizens.
