Rwanda's parliament has voted to abolish the death penalty, a move that should clear the way for suspects in the 1994 genocide to be extradited back to Rwanda.
[...]
Survivors of the slaughter welcomed the decision, noting that the death penalty had existed in Rwandan law before the genocide.

"It didn't deter people from picking up machetes to slaughter their fellows - that's why we are not bothered by its removal," said Theodore Simburudali, president of the Ibuka genocide survivors' group.

Woohoo! Go, Rwanda! My, my, even they have decided that keeping company with such states as the USA, Iran, China and North Korea in this matter is not for them. This is some great news! :)

I think it's most interesting that this could mean extradition of suspects...a number of whom are hiding out in Canada...wonder how that's going to play out.

The death penalty didn't prevent the genocide? Gee, you don't say! :p

Seriously though, I don't expect the death penalty to work as a deterrent in most cases. Some criminals need to be permanently incapacitated, and the death penalty is one way to do it, and often encourages confessions besides.

Good for Rwanda. Isn't it wonderful to know that one's country can be compared only to developing nations and tyranical dictatorships in it's appetite for state murder?

Well you know, it's a lot easier to do that than compare the appetite for state kidnapping. I mean, all states do that, so it's probably A.O.K.

Yeah, but does every state kidnap 10 year-olds guilty of nothing at all to put pressure on their children? We did that, too.

Sure. Prison, Jail, JV... it's all the same story, age is never a barrier.

I got the age wrong. However, the article says that children were kidnapped by the US and taken to "black sites".

Edit: Actually, I was wrong. The youngest was 7: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/6/6/232627/3357

It's sickening when a backwards African country renowned for its genocides is ahead of the United States in such a critical aspect of the justice system.

That said, well done, Rwanda. Let's hope you fix your other problems as well, eh?

Meh.

So they got rid of it.

By tomorrow there could be a new government and it could be installed yet again.....

Very true. Not the world's most stable region. It's a real shame what's been going on over there, and the death penalty has never been responsible.

Sadly, I have to agree. It is sickening. Honestly, that's about all I can say, that it is sickening.

On a brighter note though, it is good news to hear from Rwanda! :D

Stangely I am unable to muster any sympathy for someone convicted of murder, unless they are truly innocent (which isn't very often).

You're not alone in that, to say the least. Regardless whether we press for the death penalty in a murder case, there needs to be lifetime incapacitation, I think.

Funny how they abolished the death penalty just to extradite suspects. I bet it may not last long.
