This thread was inspired by that thread about U.S pride .
It goes like this , Tell us your country and a thing your proud of and not proud of . I'm rather interested in what people think about there own country.

I'm from the USA. I'm proud of how the US constitution guarantees our freedoms and how we as a people have over the years extended those freedoms to more and more of our citizens. I think that despite recent setbacks we will continue to improve by expanding on those freedoms and making sure everyone in our nation gets to share in them equally.

I can assure you that I'm not. I'm proud that my people believe in liberty. We're not monitored by surveillance cameras as we walk down the street. Even nazis can speak their mind as long as they don't infringe on the freedoms of others. You can be of any religion or of no religion. I think that's something to be proud of.

I'm proud of the role my country played in the creation of modern liberal democracy (Magna Carta, Glorious Revolution, etc). I'm proud that my country managed to not only create the greatest Empire the world has ever seen, but also dismantle with the minimum of explosions. I'm proud of my country today, for the reasons the DCD so eloquently gave.

That's "UKGBNI". This is why most people say "UK". And yes, I do. No offence but, erm... duh. And I am part English, so I can claim the Magna-Carta. This, however, is irrelevant because the UKGBNI is the legitimate successor to the UKGBI which is the legitimate successor to the KI and KGB which is a legitimate successor to the Kingdoms of England and Scotland.

Thus, all inhabitants of the UK can be proud of the pre-Union achievments of all inhabitants as much as the Dutch can be proud of something achieved by the Dutch Republic.

"What do you think of your parents?"

"Slavery is illegal, you know."

For those of you who can't work it out, this an attack on CBs poor grammar. I am a complete and total Grammar Nazi.

On a differant note, he didn't say "country". He said "nation." Supposing I was a Kurd? Then maybe I would be proud of Saladin. But there's no country for Kurds, unfortunately.

Oh, and forgive the double.

Haha. I think the accent does it when the drunken charm wouldn't normally be enough.

I'm somewhat proud of Canada, there are some things that we've done that are pretty progressive, but I think there's a lot more we could do to make things fair for everyone. I also don't think we've done much that's particularly useful for the environment and we should do that.

Except that we are being monitored (ever hear of "The Patriot Act"?);our supposed constitutionally-granted freedoms are steadily being eroded (thanks to Alberto Gonzales' attack on habeas corpus); and we send "suspected terorists" to foreign countries (e.g. Egypt) to be tortured . . . all this courtesy of the Bush Administration.

Well, it's all relative. I've lived in Glasgow for 20 years and love it, but I attend art school in Edinburgh and love that too. Ideally we'd form a MEGALOPOLIS OF THE NORTH and kick the shit out of everyone else.

It is true that the Brits are associated with Tea. This why it came as a shock to discover this fact, originally in the Guiness book of records, about 20 years ago, and still true today.

I appreciate Sweden for being a socially liberal, secular and generally laid back place where I can live my life and know that the government isn't against me for it so I don't have to live under the yoke of active government harassment and be used by pseudo-religious and homophobic demagogues as a staple for fearmongering, and I of course in that same vein appreciate the modernity of our constitution and our freedom and form of democracy and our 200 years of peace and yadda yadda yadda.

I appreciate less that we still have the monarchy (oh, how I hate you, Your Royal Highness! - not that I want it replaced by something stupid like a republic; we don't need to replace it with anything) and that we are part of the EU, especially this side of the post-millennial enlargement. I also don't very much care for us being so close to Denmark.

I'm proud of the progress we're making for a country with only 9 million citizens. If everything goes as planned we'll be independent of oil by 2020, we got a space program, develop our own military toys (fighter jets, stealth ships, silent submarines...) and my Internet connection is 100Mb.

I'm not so proud of our lack of sovereignty. When a bigger country tells us to do something we suck up to them and follow orders. On the other hand that policy did keep us out of WW2.

Edit: I also agree with everything Fassigen said except I like Denmark and if we do escape from EU I hope we can get a free trade and travel treaty with EU.

America is ok. It's pretty free, but there's too much Christianity in our politics. And our entertainment and news are saturated with bullshit (Paris Hilton debacle, Anne Nicole Smith's death, American Idol's popularity...). Our government also doesn't like to do the right thing too often, but meh.

I am proud of the beauty and preservation of my country and the diversity in atmosphere. It's one of the few countries that if you travel from one end to other, you will encounter and entirely different place in its own and yet, it is still part of one big greater whole.

Go from Maine and go down to Florida. Both are ocean fronted states and one is cold and has rocky beaches while the other is hot and has almost a tropical flair to it. Then go from Pennsylvania to California. One is filled with such history and historical structures and impressive today even though you see them many times and the other has become such pinnacle of diversity while embracing modern technology; and even the thick greens and wonderful falls of New England to the desert sands of West. It is quite impressive to say that we have a marvelous environment....if nothing much nice can be said of our people or government.

P.S. I am obviously from the US. ;)

I'm proud of the fact my country (New Zealand) manages to combine a high degree of social progressiveness with a deregulated economy... eg. prostitution is legal, civil union (but not marriage - yet) is available for gay couples, and a no-fault accident compensation framework has existed for years. Yet very few tariffs or subsidies exist to prop up domestic industry.

I'm not proud however for the propensity for our people to spend beyond their means, to fall all too easily for media spin or appeals to emotion; and to slavishly follow overseas fashions from management theory to shoes. I'm also not proud that the "clean and green" image we exploit for tourism is due largely to our small population, rather than because we act any greener than anyone else...

Well, looks there is a man with soul so dead. And mind so numb.

Yes, it is true that many ordinary Americans protested against unfair tax (unfair because a homeland Britisher paying the same tax could vote) and not-so-unfair Indian land purchase laws. But they did create the worlds first real republic with a constitution that, ammended, still stands to this day. So they got something right.

"Nursed on genocide"? You refer to the plains Indians, yes? Well, tell you what. Pick a random country. ANY random country. I'll find some genocide committed by it or its predecessor states. You aren't the only ones.

On the exploitation... you cut down trees. To build houses. So you wouldn't die, come winter.

Again, not just you.

Oh, and America isn't doing anything scandalous in the third world. It's companies are. If they breach US law, they can be punished, but unfortunately they're breaking the laws of corrupt countries that need the money.

I'm proud of the fact that our scientists had great roles in inventions ranging from as simple as matches through revolutionary ones as vitamin C or carburator to complex as computers and well, nuclear bombs.

I'm not so proud of the fact that most of these people had to go abroad to achieve this, because they were not supported by their own country, that our political life is infuriating, and that this country was always on the losing side in the past century but never by her own choice.

Anyway, I'm from Hungary.
