Angela Merkel

It seems like everyone (well, almost everyone) loves her now after the summit. I have to say, she seems to have a talent for making people come to agreements of sorts...she did the same with the EU budget talks a while ago (which are notorious for always ending with everyone not speaking to each other anymore).

Spiegel is certainly falling over itself to praise her:
"The Summit Saviour" (http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,487570,00.html)
The Green Chancellor (http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,487471,00.html)
"Queen of the Summit" "revels in breakthrough" (http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,487394,00.html)
Crowned "Miss World" by German media (http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,487402,00.html)
Even Nobel Peace Prize Winners (http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,487073,00.html) are praising her.

But what do you reckon, about this summit and about her in general?

And finally, a funny side story (http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,487444,00.html) regarding the protests.

I have to say she has been an awfully good chancellor, maybe we should have more scientists in governments.

course there is something off putting about the woman she looks as if at any moment she will morph into neo-thatcher!

only without doing anything particularly bad beyond failing to lower German health insurance

hell I was pretty impressed by the fact she hasn't messed up anything else since 2005 (course she did fail to get peace in the middle east but you can't really blame her)

Okay, thank you. I like to know why I think someone is a fucktard, because people give you funny looks if you just assume everyone's a jackass.

Well, we debate about Bush, Blair, Sarkozy, Chavez, Castro and any number of other knobheads in government. Might as well add her to the list.

Seriously that would be the biggest concern for them, Germans should not have to go through Thatcherism like the Brits, hopefully Sarkozy doesn't force it on the French either. I have to say though, she hasn't really done anything particularly conservative or right-wing, maybe out of fear of backlash or whatnot.

Well, the mild variety has so far done a lot of good.

Mainly because
- she isn't particularly socially conservative herself
- Schröder already did a lot of the reforming
- she's governing as part of a coalition with the Social Democrats

Domestically she tried a few reforms on things like health insurance which were thinned out by her coalition partners until they were barely reforms at all, and raised the sales tax a little bit. Together with the economic upswing that now looks like it's on the way to repairing the budget deficit. Unfortunatly the serious stuff (mainly social security and pensions reform) isn't really on the cards in the current coalition. Not much would come from it.

She's done better in foreign policy.

The problem with Thatcher was that, as much as I hate the woman, it was pretty much necessary. It leaves me in a quandry.

I'm indifferent. I haven't heard anything particularly good about her (though I may have to change that if she has the capability of getting people to come to agreements in general) or bad. Schroeder seems to have been slightly better, but that's just my opinion on what I've heard.

He ended his career on a low note, so my opinion of him has steadily gone down.

Especially the whole "let's create a business body with Putin and then become a boss in it just a few weeks later after the election" doesn't sit too well with me.

Indifferent.
She hasn't done anything really noteworthy since she became chancellor, but personally I stll can't forgive her sucking up to Bush the way she did before the last elections. I think that actually cost her the candidacy the first time around.

I haven't heard anything bad about her, apart from her support for the initial invasion of Iraq. Despite the prophecies of doom coming from the Labour Party conference (who were making a few tasteless jokes about the late Robin Cook supporting proportional representation) the grand coalition appears pretty successful so far. I'd take her and her cabinet over the Dear Leader and the Dear Leader-'elect' (yuck!) any day. That's Balir and Brown, by the way.

You know, I can see that there would be a lot of Americans who don't know who she is (and judging from what I remember from your TV and newspaper news, you can't even be very much faulted for that) but seeing how all it takes is to read a couple posts down the thread to see that she's the head of state of one of the leading industrial nations - do you really want to be shouting around your ignorance all defiantly?

I don't get it.

To be honest, it does surprise me, too. There are links in the OP and everything...
And considering the hype about Sarkozy's election, you'd think people would know who's currently in charge of Germany...
