"We just think it's sending the wrong message, particularly to young people," Mr Beatty told AAP.

"We just don't want to encourage anyone to go hitting any animal, even if it is a cane toad, with a golf club, a baseball bat, a cricket bat or any other form of blunt instrument."

No blunt objects. Got it. So it's ok to use one of these, right?

Yeah, I saw that on ABC TV news the other night. I actually live in Townsville which is where the stubby holders were being made for.

It is a central and north Qld tradition (as well as other places I'm sure) to grab a golf club or cricket bat and go out toad hunting. I haven't done it for two years or so though. I always just assumed they died immediately though.

"This is a campaign that promotes the good things about Townsville and our residents," he said.

Oh yeah? Like what?

lol, whenever someone asks what is so good about Townsville people will only say either "The Strand/Beach" or just say "it is a great place to live". Why I'm not really sure.

But Russell of Brisbane made a point in the comment section.

One reason to add Australia to my list of places to never give my tourism then.

That is a load of crap. Never in my life have I hit a toad and seen it get up and hop away. In fact I'm having a hard time thinking of any toad that me or one of my mates have hit that has even twitched upon closer inspection.

lol. Do you live somewhere with a cane toad population? Because if you do I highly suggest getting a golf club and a torch and a mate and going toad hunting. It is really awesome fun.

Now I'm getting all nostalgic. It was great doing it where I lived, because it was in a housing estate 15 mins out of town. And we had an acreage so there were always tons of them hanging around the yard. And behind our back fence is just massive empty paddocks and bushland, so we could hit them as far as we wanted without fear of them splattering onto someone's window.

The only drawback is that the ones you don't hit far enough away REALLY stink when the sun hits them the next morning.

Quick 101: Back in the day they introduced them here to get rid of some kind of pest... Unfortunately it backfired and the canetoads became a pest themselves).

We've been trying everything to get rid of the buggers ever since.

Did I mention the problem we have with rabbits? (thankyou Britons who wished to have game to hunt!).

This is kind of interesting... the RSPCA should support toad golfing, considering the toads kill just about eveything else around them. But, mostly the things that try to eat them, what with the poison and all.

And by hitting them with clubs on a regular basis, they might evolve a counterattack. *imagines toads that explode into clouds of lethal neurotoxins*

Delightful. :)

Yes it does..

RSPCA aren't opposed to killing toads, indeed I'm fairly sure they encourage it for the reasons listed. But it is the method of hitting them with golf clubs they're opposed to. Their method is to catch them and put them in a freezer. Obviously not as much fun.

But Russell of Brisbane made a point in the comment section.I read on teh wiki that it's still ineffective if people don't remove the carcass then it remains in the environment. This being a problem because the toads contain poison. So any natural scavenger who thinks 'oh hey, free food' will end up dead if they eat the toad. I'm willing to bet most just hit the toad and then leave it there.

They do sound like an awful pest though.
