Mixed Nuts

So I was enjoying a packet of mixed nuts today, and I wondered to myself "which of these is my favorite?" Simple question, right? Not really, it turns out, for me at least. Each nut has something to offer, whether the crunch of the almond, oiliness of the peanut, the texture of the pecan, the slight bitterness of the walnut, the richness of the cashew, the meatiness of the brazil nut, the filbert-ness of the filbert... you get the idea. :p

So, the question is: what's your favorite? Which do you reach for first when you see that bowl of mixed nuts laid out on the table? :)

So you have those deep thoughts, too?

Pecans in paper thin shells. Preferably from my back yard.

Definatly peanuts, especially if they're honey-roasted. *Starts drooling*

Oh yes. :)

Ah, I wished I owned a nut tree - it would be such a savings in the long run. :)

As for my favorite, I'm torn between the cashew and the brazil nut, though nothing beats a good peanut or walnut when you're in the mood.

Hazelnut, and unsalted of course. The salt takes away from the natural flavour and just makes you thirsty.

Interesting. Never tried that one.

I finally voted brazil nut - there's just something about the brazil nut. :p Must be the radium (yes, brazil nuts are slightly radioactive). :)

Depends what kind of mixed nuts they are. If they are those standard roasted and salted mixed nuts then I go for the cashews. If they are those fun nuts that you have to crack yourself then the walnuts.

:D

I'm a lover of nuts....what can I say? ;)

Same for me, but I hate walnuts.
They always seem dry and tasteless to me.. maybe I don't get the good kind.

I always thought they were unpleasant as a kid, but years later I took a liking to them. There's an interesting bite to them. Kind of unique. :)

A filbert is closest in taste to a hazelnut, I'd say. Good to see another brazil nut fan. :p

A unique dry, flaky, and somewhat bitter taste. *nods*

But I guess I am still a young'un, all I need to do is wait a few years.

Could be. I like flavoring oatmeal with walnut bits, and walnut is great as the "nut" part of a banana-nut anything, too. Sometimes a stong flavor can be neutralized a bit if it's too harsh. :)

In oatmeal it is tolerable, so long as there is synonym in it as well.
Blecchhk.. to bananas. Not only do they taste funny, but the aftertaste is like rotting/fermenting bananas.

I would pick Brazil nuts but they are way too much trouble......almonds as well.

I guess walnuts.

I used to have a pecan tree, so I got tired of them after a while.

I really like peanuts but they are actually legumes.

I love wasabi cashews. Don't get them often, because I can't stop eating them if I have them at home, and nuts are caloric bombs.

Well I'll be. Looks like there's a lot of variety as to what kind of nut everyone prefers. I guess we know why they're often sold in a mixture - something for everyone! :p

I daresay I would never sully my cashews with other nuts, but...well, obviously I'd go for the cashew. Hell, I even regularly buy cashew butter instead of peanut butter. How's that for devotion?

Oh, yes, cashew butter, almond butter, hazelnut butter(that, I think, is the really really sweet kind that turns into more of a desert pastry spread than a sandwich spread...called Nutella...) and all sorts of butters. Just check out your local supermarket at some point...you'd be surprised at what all is available.

Will do. :) I've only got peanut and apple right now, when it comes to butters other than dairy. I could use some variety. :p

Pistachios. They're not in mixed nuts or on this poll, but I love 'em.

I also like honey-roasted peanuts reasonably well, and love a little hazelnut in my chocolate. Beyond that, I really don't like nuts. I think it's the texture - they always seem to taste "stale" to me.

I like walnuts in the shell. I can sit back and bust those open in my hand til my hand is bruised and sore from the shells. Takes a fair bit of strength in your hands to bust walnuts like that, but it's fun!

i'll hold mine and raise you three dodecahedrons.

if there were an all option i'd have picked it.

there's a game someone came up with, for a time and place where paper, or the harvesting of trees to make paper, is either unlawful or otherwise impossible, like on some planet that doesn't have them or something, where you use mixed nuts like poker cards. i don't remember which kinds are worth which numerical values, but the same ranking of combinations as in poker apply. streights, flushes, full houses, royals and all that.

i don't know if he's on here or not, but he does like to write, and any way he goes by the handle of "white scorpion" where i know of him, and this game, which he calls "hold your nuts", from. and no, he's not me. so i must give credit where it is due. but that was the first thing that come to my mind seeing this thread.

Kinda hard to visualize how you'd do it, but it could probably happen. The thing is dividing the nuts into different suits and numbers. But maybe if you had enough different kinds...

well that's the thing, he's got it explained in the writer's forum on hip forums.
it's like filberts were aces and brazil nuts were jacks and that sort of thing.
like i say, i'm not sure i remember which are which, and of course, unlike a regulation poker deck, you could end up ligitimately with everyone holding five of a kind and all of the same kind, but probably not very often.

yah, you'd need a 'barrel' of mixed nuts of at least five different kinds, nine or 13 would be even better of course. there aren't any different suits though, just different values for each species.

i should post a link to that thread on this one.
