eBay follies and my stubborn attitude

So I had an incident that I wanted to share, to see what others think of it.

It all started a few weeks ago.

I bought a PC game on eBay and when I received the package, I realized it was the wrong game. I E-mailed the seller. Once, twice, three times, no reply. Finally I sent a message with the subject heading "DO YOU WANT NEGATIVE FEEDBACK?"

That got their attention. They replied and said they'd be happy to send me the right one just as soon as I returned the wrong one. That's fine, but did that mean I'd get a refund for the shipping of the wrong one back? For what I paid to ship the thing to me it should have been Priority Mail, know what I mean?

So I send it back, get the correct game, no refund on my shipping cost to send them the wrong one back. (This is an issue for me, because I've sold a lot of stuff on eBay as well and whenever I sent the wrong item, I always ate the shipping cost of returning it.)

So between the poor response to E-mail and the cost issue, I left negative feedback. This person has a feed back rating of over 18,000. Surely my negative wouldn't be a big impact, right? Well this morning I get a message from them requesting to withdraw mutual negative feedback. The message says they'll happily refund the shipping of the wrong item if I agree to withdraw the negative. Well, not being one to hold a grudge I decided to do it, but then it hit me.... MUTUAL?

Buh?

So I check my feedback and lo and behold, they've left me retaliatory feedback. Here's their negative feedback comment: "THE EBAY FEEDABCK SYSTEM IS STOOOOOOOOOOPID!!!!!!" Then I checked the reply line to th enegative feedback I left and they're saying that they refunded the shipping already (past tense.) Hm. A lie.

So here's where my personality quirk takes over. I realize I'm being strong-armed. They left me retaliatory feedback as a way to pressure me to withdraw... they offer me the refund ONLY if I withdraw. Then, they lie (or just assume I'll give in) about the refund.

So now, *NO WAY* am I withdrawing that feedback. I'll take the negative hit on my rating as a badge of honor because from the comment it's obvious the intent was retaliation.

What do y'all think?

God, eBay, how I hate thee. >.<

I'd send them another mail, all annoyingly polite, saying that unfortunately you haven't received the reimbursement yet, which can only be a mistake, seeing how they said on your feedback site that they already sent it, so if they would please look into that. As soon as you'd receive the reimbursement and they withdraw their negative feedback of you, you would of course immediately withdraw your negative feedback - because at that point you will actually have gotten what you paid for with the initital eBay transaction and you have no reason to rate them negatively anymore.

Gah. I hate eBay.

Negative feedback happens to the best of us. I got slapped with a retaliatory feedback for an item I sold (paintball marker). I waited a month for payment, with 5-6 emails to the person, and no response. I gave him a negative feedback for non-payment/non-communication, and 89 days after the end of the auction, he gave me negative feedback (he claimed I was the one that wasn't communicating). My mom got a negative feedback after 1 out of a set of 8 dishes got broken during shipping. She made every effort to work with the buyer, including giving the buyer a full refund (while letting them keep the 7 good dishes), and still got a negative feedback.

As far as withdrawing the negative feedback, it'll be erased from his score, but it'll still show up in his feedback as a mutually withdrawn feedback (so it doesn't completely disappear). Would I withdraw the negative feedback? It would depend for me, on how much shipping was. If it was only a few dollars, then hell no. But if it was $10-$20 or more, then I'd probably do it.

Well since I returned the item using the lowest possible rate, we're only talking $2. I really don't care about that, it's the principle of it.

And yanno... I've gotten a negative or two over the years, one of them was s story not unlike what happened to your mom. I expect that sort of nonsense. That's why taking this hit on my feedback rating doesn't really bother me.

For $2, I'd refuse to withdraw the feedback. BTW, I believe (although I'm not 100% sure) you can respond to their claim of refunding your shipping cost.

for $2 I would leave it. I would also keep all the copies of the emails from them and seek out help with Ebay over the negative feedback you got........and do what WYTYG said and send them a polite email saying you haven't received your refund yet, keep their reply to that as well.

Oh I did. The real trick was making my point in 40 characters or less :)

Here's what I left as a reply to their claim:
"You left me retaliatory negative and offered that refund to get me to remove neg"

You are being juvenile, but not nearly as much as they are.
