National Anthem

Well, I am bored today so I thought I'd listen to national anthems from as many countries as possible, and apart from the European cultural imperialism;) I also seem to have found many I like, especially Egypt, I find it really catchy, Sweden is good too, I find the Australian one quite boring.

So peoples, what is your favorite national anthem that you have heard, you can find mp3s linked if you follow the links on wiki articles of the countries.

We did remember, when we got rid of God Save the Queen.

But I do agree, we need something new, I think Howard would be afraid the same way he was of a new flag, that he might get the Eureka flag or some anthem that pays respect to the miner rebellion for something that gives 1+ point to labor, or something anti-British.

Though I don't agree with its Zionist lyrics, I like the sound of Israel's anthem... it's very different from the regular bland European sound of most other anthems.

For reference, it has quite a few online-listening-format-type-files.

Azerbaijan has a pretty cool one, mainly the beginning part.

Most of them sound...the same. I was hoping more would be played, with native instruments or something. But for they amount that these anthems differ, there might as well be a world anthem.

Two legs good! Four legs bad!

Oh the German one is good, especially if you actually include the verse that's not supposed to really be in it any more. The British one is militaristic and dull, same goes for the US one, really.

The Canadian one gets an honourable mention for being kind of like celery - pleasant, albeit not too full of flavour.

It's got great 'fuckwithability'. Of all the things we're WAY too uptight about (the flag), it's cool that we have something like that that no one has a problem fucking with it. I think it made more sense at the time, that whole 'can't knock us down' when we were underdogs. Now it seems kind of dickish. Ah well. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band can switch seamlessly between it and the Flintstones theme, that's pretty cool.

Because of the amount of religious stuff mentioned. Like praying to heaven, and God. Athiests of the more uptight type might go all "Omg wtf! that song is about a delusion! pffrt!"

Also, anyone who is against world peace and unity. Which is no doubt a large number.

It's not an inherently religious song. It just mentions religion considering it's one of the obstacles to human unity and peace.

That and every national anthem is obligated to include some word meaning "God" by international law.

Taking away the biased option - God Save the Queen, naturally, Brazil and Italy have REALLY good anthems. Israel's tune is pretty good too.

Germany's is nice, das Deutschenlied, it's a bit of a soft-sounding one, but it's an anthem that can be REALLY belted out, see during the World Cup when the German anthem was belted out for the first time during a football game. Same can be said for God Save the Queen, if not most anthems tho.

Oh, and La Marseilles is rather good too, even if I AM English

Well I would mention the Hungarian one as an interesting anthem. Not because it would be the best but because it has the most depressing tune and lyrics I've ever heard. I don't know how many other anthems are about how a nation occupied a great land, then angered God with its sins, sucked throughout a millenium as a punishment for it, and is now begging for mercy and blessing, and not about what a great country <INSERT COUNTRY> is. Kinda hard to inspire people with it, it rather makes them feel it sucks to be Hungarian.:D

Russia—our beloved country.
A mighty will, a great glory
Are yours forever for all time!

Chorus:
Be glorious, our free Fatherland,
Ancient union of brotherly peoples,
Ancestor given wisdom of the people!
Be glorious, country! We are proud of you!

From the southern seas to the polar region
Lay our forests and our fields.
You are one in the world! You are one of a kind,
Native land protected by God!

Chorus

Wide spaces for dreams and for living
Are open to us by the coming years.
Our faith in our Fatherland gives us strength.
So it was, so it is, and so it will always be!

i should someday compose one for cameroi, carlemnaria, lananara, et al.

it would almost certainly be something totally spacey played on synthasizers and therimins.
