Censorship changing face of the internet
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6724531.stm
Amnesty International has warned that the internet "could change beyond all recognition" unless action is taken against the erosion of online freedoms.
The warning comes ahead of a conference organised by Amnesty, where victims of repression will outline their plights.
The "virus of internet repression" has spread from a handful of countries to dozens of governments, said the group.
Amnesty accused companies such as Google, Microsoft and Yahoo of being complicit in the problem.
Good points all around. Also from the article:
According to the latest Open Net Initiative report on internet filtering, at least 25 countries now apply state-mandated net filtering including Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Burma, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Morocco and Saudi Arabia
Man, India? That surprises me.

Man, India? That surprises me.
Why? It may be the largest democratic republic in the world, but it's hardly a social liberal paradise.
Remember, we're the guys who brought you such wonderful things as the caste system.

It's true. I hear they have very strange customs there that often influence the law. Strange world sometimes.

No stranger than your customs are to us.
We have customs established by millenia of development as first a group of disparate states, and then over various years an empire, a group of disparate states, and empire, a group of disparate states, a colony, and then finally the worlds largest democratic republic.
It's hard to shake customs and culture and heritage that have been established for longer than Christianity has been around.

Come on now, a lot of that stuff is really bizarre over there. :p
In any case, modern India is mich different than the India that was in transition at the time of Jesus, and would probably be difficult to recognize if we could visit today, say, with a time-machine - not that I ever meant to get going on Christianity - which isn't really my "culture" anyway. ;)

Fair enough. I just find the comments of other cultures being "strange" (from both sides of the field) to be a little ludicrous, considering that "strangeness" is totally subjective.
Which is why I tend to get equally annoys when my mom says something like "Alistair, what kind of name is that? English names are strange."
