Several thousand turkish troops have NOT crossed into Iraq. Or have they?

Several thousand Turkish troops crossed into northern Iraq early Wednesday to chase Kurdish guerrillas who attack Turkey from bases there, two Turkish security officials said. Turkey's foreign minister denied its troops had entered Iraq.

So is it now just a matter of time before Turkish troops invade? Or will they be able to restrain themselves?

Whatever the truth is this time, the rumours alone have driven up oil prices again...

It seems to have been a matter of hot pursuit, almost.

Turkey launched several cross-border raids against these guerillas under Hussein. Very few of them gained press then because they were small, localized actions. I doubt that the Turks will actually invade. They'll threaten, posture, and get the US to do her dirty work, but I doubt they'll actually invade.

Hot pursuit with a number of troops that is "not in the tens of thousands" makes me curious...

Seems like they were waiting for a PKK or associated raid, the interception went afoul and the insurgents got away, and the Turkish armored units gave chase.

The troop buildup along the border is apparently quite large.

Hurrah for bashing the Kurds. Or not, if that's your preference.

7,000 of them....It'd be like a cross between "Convoy" and "smokey and the bandit"....

So how, if at all, is this gonna affect Turkey's chances of getting into the EU.....

You'd think the Americans would be happy about this. ;)

Maybe even use it as a chance to get some help...

Maybe even use it as a chance to get some help...if its tens of thousands.. that would make turkey the second largest foreign army in Iraq.

More than the Brits and all the Coalition of the billing (except US)

That's not good news. Our relations are bad enough as it is with Turkey and if my brothers lobbying firm gets it way, we are going to be putting pressure on them to get out of Cyprus also. I don't foresee a bright future for Turkey-U.S. relations.

Every source I've found so far indicates this was a small force entering and they didn't stick around.

I didn't think they were very bad ... we have troops in Turkey, don't we? I have a friend in the air force who is in a base in Adana right now.
