I've liked Edward Goreys work for a while but I only kew of a very small portion of it. I first learned of it when I saw The Gashlycrumb Tinies (http://www.evilcripple.com/gashlycrumb/).

A tenant/friend that just moved in with me has two of fifteen books called Amphigorey, which made me love his dark humor all the more.

Anyone else out there familiar with his work? Got any favorites?

I quite liked the Gashlycrumb Tinies, but that's about the limit of my familiarity. My wife is a huge fan, though.

I need to find the rest of the books now that I got hooked by the first two. Sometimes I wonder though if its actually funny or if I am insane. :p

That's how I learned my ABCs! Seriously.

I had two alphabet books. One was Alphabears, and one was Gorey's.

I can still say the whole thing from memory.

I read The Gashlycrumb Tinies a few days ago but haven't really come across any other of his work

course 100 books would keep me occupied for awhile...

Not Gorey-style, Gorey himself. :)

As for Gorey's other works, I always had a particular fondness for the Gashlycrumb Tiny who died of ennui. (Neville, was it?)

I'm a fan. In fact, I found a copy of the Gashlycrumb Tinies in a bookstore about two months ago. Until then, my roommates didn't believe it existed. Afterward, they realized where my sense of humor came from. ^_^

Yep, he did quite a bit of that type of work as I understand. In fact, I didn't originally know of his other work and thought that was the bulk of what he did.

His books are mostly illustration accompanied by few words (from my own experience anyway), so the majority of your time is spent looking at pictures.

:D No wonder you aren't put off by my own humor. :p

Your link is inferior. You will note that U has Unis slipping down a drain. The original unfortunate girl was called Una, a nod to Spenser's Fairie Queen, I assume.

Sorry for being such a nitpicking snob. My brother is a fine artist and my partner is a poet. To make up for it, here's a link to a font based on Gorey's lettering:

I'm not a fan, but I have eaten in his favorite eatery. A place called "Jacks Outback" in Yarmouthport, MA, which has a month of his breakfast and lunch checks (written in his own handwriting) in a frame on the wall.

This little place was a hoot, you walk in, take a pad, write what you want, give it to the cook, grab your own coffee, sit down, bus your own table...unfortunately, Jack became very ill, and had to sell. The lady who took over is good, but it's no Jacks.

anyway...anyone who is interested in Gorey, Yarmouthport has a little museum too, I believe it's in his house.

I know the Tinies by heart. I recite them to myself when bored, as when waiting for a bus.

He also did picture books for children and non-children, other alphabets, besides the Tinies, and limericks such as:

To his club-footed son said Lord Stipple
As he poured his post-prandial tipple,
"Your mother's behavior
gave pain to Our Savior
And that's why He made you a cripple."

And

A guest in a household most charmless
Was told its eccentric was harmless.
"If you're caught unawares
At the top of the stairs,
Just remember he's eyeless and armless."

And one of my favorites

Little Zooks, of whom no one was fond,
They shot towards the roof and beyond.
The infant's trajectory
Carried him over the rectory
And into a lily-choked pond.

I think I have all or nearly all of his stuff, mostly in the 3 big collections, Amphigorey, Amphigorey Too, and Amphigorey Also.

I didn't lose it. It is still a paradise of progressive social policies and civic freedoms. :D However, its ruler (me) doesn't know how to read a calendar. I let it lapse for 29 days, triggering auto-delete, got it promptly restored, but the email validation to use the forums went to a dead email address, and I can't seem to get that fixed. So...there ya go. Lesson for the kids: Don't be a dope. ;)

I didn't lose it. I stupidly lost track of the calendar, let it lapse into auto-delete for about 24 hours, got the nation restored, but can't get the forum validation sent to a non-dead email address. Lesson: Always know what day it is.

I have a book of classic horror/suspense short stories such as some of H.P. Lovecraft's work, a bit of Poe and assorted others. Ed Gorey does all the illustration for it.

I am familiar with his work, since I had to do a report on him, but I hated his work, and didn't hand in the assignment. It reminds me of that Tim Burton claymation movie about a skeleton and santa claus, another style which is simply repulsive to me.

Down with Gorey!
