People you Admire

So, lets hear about 'em. Who are some people you admire? Why do You admire them? Do you hate when I post running questions?

Her name is Lisa, I met her last night at a birthday party sitting on the sidelines and letting the kids run amok. She is very very attractive and has this aura about her that would make people think she was special. I would have walked right past her and thought nothing more but she asked me to get her some punch and I obliged.

As I got to talking with her I realized she is someone whom I admire. She's about my age, very strong willed and opinonated; even at her young age she devotes much of her time to the people who need her help. She was going to be doing Missionary work in Nigeria again. Very courteous and polite and had a great sense of humor. We talked for the entire duration of the party about things, the more we spoke the more I realized how exceptional she is. She is not in the least selfish, and its my opinion she would die for a complete stranger if she thought it would help them. While I am not a fan of religion she was actually very accepting and understanding of my views, and thought that in my own way I was a very good person.

I admire Lisa, she had so many qualities that to me were worth every bit of respect and admiration, I can see her moving on to do some amazing things within her lifetime if she stays her course and I am proud to be a footnote in her life history. Lisa, a complete stranger that I have come to admire.

I have many others but I'll let other people put thier two cents in.

My best friend. He'll remain nameless because that is his nature.

I've known him for over 10 years. We met when I was in grade 7 and he was in grade 8. He claims he's boring and his head a useless vault of knowledge but he's one of the most sane people I know and not to mention well-read. He's got a dark sense of humour; kind of like me. We're both a little cynical and jaded.

I admire him if only for the simple reason that he didn't treat me like a second class citizen and treated me like an equal when the other kids would tease me and make my life miserable when I was younger. He was one of the few people that treated me right. He helped keep me sane until other people started to be nice to me ignore that I was hearing impaired.

As he said to me recently when we were in a chat session and I thought I was taking up his time because I had nothing to say and that I'm boring, "you're allowed to be boring, you're a married woman." - mind you, it's just common law now but it will be official in August and he's hopefully going to be my best man (screw having a maid of honour). :)

i admire my girlfriend and my parents primarily. my gf works hard, has her head screwed on right, knows what she wants and works to get it, is friendly and kind to everybody, is tolerant, and just lovely :)

my parents i admire because they always put food on my plate and provided for me even when things went tits up and we lost our house, they never sacrificed their principles in the face of it all, and they're still together, supporting each other and loving each other after over 35 years of marriage :)

In answer to the OP, I find that I don't admire anyone. I admire certain qualities about some people, but I always seem to find myself so disgusted by other aspects of their personalities that I cannot admire them.

Could also be that I hang out with a bunch of dirty damned drug addicts...

IRL, I admire my 4 year old this week, she has taught me that being fearless has it's rewards, and that it's okay to cry if you need to.

My three year old for me on that. Also that it is the simple things where joy can be found.

I admire all my children for enduring my ongoing experimentation in parenting on them. Their patience is boundless.

Famous people...

Ghengis Khan. He had a vision and a Goal, he achieved it with no recognition...not for any of the note worthy things...and i would guess he knew that.

I admire the children in a texas church who when confronted with a shooter through themselves on top of the youngest children without a thought for their own lives. This shows that heroism is within all of us and that at any given moment we may be called to task and trial. That at that moment we should not hesitate to place ourselves into harms way.

I admire my Father, for being a drunk, a drug addict, and nearly the closest thing to a vagabound I have ever known...a true rogue. And still never for a moment did I feel unthought of, or unloved, or unattended to, not because there were not times when our bellies were empty, but because he never failed to love me. I hope to be as good a father as he was.

I admire my grandfather,
The man worked hard, and was diligent to his family. Nothing kept him from duties as the provider and protector. He showed all people respect and treated them with dignity until they choose to not reciprocate at which point he showed them a courteous man is not weak man, or always a kind man.
He was stubborn and stuck in his ways, but he never failed to try and express his affection for his family...even if the man was bad at it.
I see him know as I am a grown man with children myself as he deserved to be seen...as a Titan. When I was young I veiwed as weak old and foolish.
I lament that ignorant thinking, that childish selfcentered all knowing atittude.

I wish to God in heaven that he knows I respect him.

At this precise moment that is it.

I guess I admire a sergeant I met at RSC, the talking got to putting the army first radder radder and she mentioned how she is a single parent who is lucky enough to dump her kids on her mother when she has to be deployed but if it came to it she could never put her kids into care...doesn't look like much but its the little heroes that I admire

I also admire a friend of mine, shes been through allot yet still remains cheerful and is someone who you can trust when the world goes pants (though prone to violence and suffers from big mood swings, mad is a good word)

yep- it's me darlin'. :fluffle:

I've missed you all loads.

I admire my Daughter for many reasons, but I'll hit on one for now:

Last year, during her 2nd grade school year, she came home one day and proceeded to tell me about her day as usual. This particular day, she explained to me that a student named, TJ, was in a wheelchair and would never be able to walk. She wasnt sure why, but she noticed everyday during recess, the teachers would roll him out on the playground and leave him there alone, sitting in his chair to watch everyone play. Reagan told me that she thought that was really unfair.
"Mom, dont you think that sitting there watchng everyone else run and play might make him sad since he knows he cant do those things?" Why would they do that? They're teachers, they are supposed to be smart." So I decided that I'm going to spend my recess with TJ.....I've been reading to him this week and one day we just talked and played Rock/Paper/Scissors. He's a nice person mom and I think he's enjoying recess now. Before, no one ever went over to talk to him. He always looked so sad.......but this week, he looks a little happier."

I admire her for millions of other things....she's the best.

Generally speaking, I would say my dad as he is the one who guided me through life based on his example and made me who I am today.

However, there are people I admire in many specific departments. Musicially speaking, I am a big fan of Elliott Smith, Andy Wood, and (cheesy teen cliche) Kurt Cobain. Politically speaking, it would be Pat Buchanun and most recently Tom Tancredo.

I guess it depends on what we are talking about.

people i admire are those who have found low stress/no stress ways to gratifyingly live while reducing to as near zero as human capacity and ability makes possible their contribution to our mutual human suffering and collective self destruction.

i'm not sure who any of these people might be. i'm not real sure i've met any of them. i'm not sure anyone entirely meets any of these goals. but whoever comes closest to doing so of all of humanity, these are the humans i come closest to admiring.

undoubtedly many survive in ways looked down upon by others. many may get by on little or as close to nothing as it is humanly possible to do so. while others may appear to have accompleshed a great deal by the arbitrary standards of the dominant society. yet these in turn are utterly irrelivant to the question.

the value of anyone is not what they possess, aquire, or even produce, but the degree to which they avoid causing suffering and harm. yet since their own suffering and harm is still suffering and harm as well, there would be little to seek to emulate if they were not also to find some gratifiction in their living at the same time as well.

fortunately, the real roots of gratification being creativity and exploration, and these, in and of themselves contribute nothing to suffering and harm, it is quite possible, even more probable then otherwise, to do so.

it is in the persuit of gratification where none is to be found that the greatest contributions to suffering are precipitated. such persuits as attempting to impress each other, the pseudo-sophistries of excitement addiction, empairing one's judgement, 'keeping score' of 'romantic' 'conquests', compairing one's self to others, various religeous and idiological chauvanisms, and so on. and even here not so much intrinsicly, but as a reasult of prioritising these things, often without being awaire of doing so, ahead of the kind of world we all have to live in.

so there are, i have little doubt, people all arround me, at every 'level' of society, whom i would likely admire greatly were i to be better aquainted with them. as my own humble and i hope harmless gratifications, do not involve or require persuit of social interaction (though by no means rule it out either), it is seldom that i get a chance to learn of their existence or identity.

to all of you, whoever you are, wherever you are, i wish you the greatest happiness and well being.

when it comes to people i THINK i admire for their stated stance, of all time, it would have to be mahandus k ghandi. of the living i would have to say nome chomski, howard zinn, and amy goodman.

though there are quite a few environmental scientists, as well as indiginous tribal elders i would add. far more then i can remember the names of. chairman wallace of the chiaka maidu of course comes to mind. and rachael carlson who wrote silent spring. and there's that guy up in canada of oriental ancestry who'se name at the moment i can't recall. which is the problem of course. most people's names i can't recall.

Tancredo was in favor of the Vietnam War and spoke in support of the conflict as a Republican student activist. He became eligible to serve in Vietnam After graduating from the University of Northern Colorado in June 1969. Tancredo eventually received a "1-Y" mental health deferment after telling doctors during his physical that he had a history of mental illness and had been treated for depression

...which might explain the following...

In the first Republican debate held on May 3, 2007, Tancredo agreed that the U.S. Supreme Court should repeal the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, adding that it would be "the greatest day in this country's history."

The greatest day?

In 2005, Tancredo introduced[31] a resolution calling on the President to recognize the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and to abandon the One-China Policy. He has been critical of the People's Republic of China. This has since been modified and reintroduced as H. Con. Res. 73.

Showing a firm grasp of simplistic foreign policy as well as deluded economics.

The League of the South (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/League_of_the_South) also invited its own members to attend the event, describing Tancredo as their "guest". According to reports, the room in which Tancredo spoke had a prominent picture of Robert E. Lee and was draped with Confederate battle flags. At the closing of the event, men dressed in Confederate military uniforms reportedly began to sing "Dixie"

Hangs with the right crowd as well!

During a radio interview on Orlando talk-radio station WFLA AM 540, Tancredo responded to a questioner asking about the hypothetical U.S. response to a nuclear attack on U.S. cities by al-Qaeda, by saying that one possible response would be to retaliate by "taking out" Muslim holy sites (specifically, Mecca) if it were clearly proven that Islamic terrorists were behind such an attack.

That would be one solution I guess, especially given how successful 'taking out' Iraq has been in combating al -Qaeda

In a May 3, 2007 debate among the ten candidates for the 2008 Republican Presidential nomination, Tancredo was one of three who indicated that he did not believe in the theory of evolution.

Quite a guy indeed!

EDIT: Though I suppose, different courses for different horses - just that he's not my version of a decent guy I guess
