No it's not. I've run at the AAA's, and frankly, the whole sport is overrated. Either fitness freaks with a fixation upon feeling the burn, 15 year old primadonnas who believe that a modicum of talent grants them the capacity to swagger about the track as a professional or raucous inner-city ghetto kids.

By contrast, the atmosphere at a cricket match is excellent.

So, by the logic employed above, whatever America deigns to call something is automatically correct?

The Europeans called it football, it came to the USA, who already had a sport called football. The USA called it soccer for some reason I don't remember.

*goes to check wiki*

Edit: The term "soccer", according to Wiki, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_for_football_%28soccer%29) is used to distingiuish soccer from other sports called football- like American football.

The "real football" is the European kind. American Football rarely has playirs kicking the ball, so it should not be called football.

Actually, from what I understand, football recieved its name not from the use of the feet, but from being played on foot--and therefore often by peasants--instead of on horseback, like many things played by the aristocracy. Various sports-- American football, soccer, and rugby, to name only a few, are all, apparently, derived from one common ancestor. Therefore, it's not "wrong" to call American football football, nor is it wrong to call soccer football, or football soccer. Saying soccer is, really, just being more specific, because football is actually a family of sports, in the same way that Poker is not a card game, but a family of card games.

(If that doesn't make sense, then I apologize, but I'm just not thinking clearly tonight. I can try to re-explain it if I need to. Also, the above is just my understanding, it is quite possible that I am mistaken.)

Furtheremore, most people who use English as their first language call European football soccer, largely due to the large population of the United States, though (I think) many in Australia/New Zealand call it soccer to distinguish from such sports as Australian Rules Football (which I notice is never critisized for "stealing" soccer's name, unlike American Football.)

Anyway, my favorite sport is Ultimate. It's just so... fun.

All things considered, I guess it's cricket.

Rugby and Ice Hockey are great though. I do however kind of worry about the state of rugby at the moment. I'm not sure I really need it from early feb to early December every year. Watching my favourite team play a French C team, Canada and then go through another round of Tri-nations games isn't as interesting as it once was..

American football is just rugby league but much slower and with far too much padding. And baseball is just rounder’s (a girls sport) with a larger bat. My favourite is rugby union, its much more action packed and the players don’t start crying and rolling about on the floor like professional footballers do when they break a nail.

I don't think that they would, considering the popularity of things like ultimate fighting and wrestling, but it's possible. Honestly though, the tackling rules in rugby make it sound like it's less violent than American football.

Edit: Rugby also seems like it is closer to soccer than it is to American football in the style of the game. More of the play is based on possession; gaining and losing control of the ball. American football is more a territory game, based on exact yardage and preventing the opponent from moving forwards.

The thing about rugby though is that once tackled all the biggest players on both teams come and stand on you, which can be quite painful;)

Rugby can be either really, some teams *coughenglandcough* play a very territorial game, lots of kicking downfield etc, others run it from their own half regularly.
